Question about Depth of Field

Question about Depth of Field
I have sort of a silly question. Is there an easier way to get depth of field than on the camera settings? It seems sort of random to my pea-sized brain. For instance, I was making something with Flight Kit, and I wanted the background to be blurred a little. The plane was blurred instead. And no matter what random numbers I typed in, it didn't fix it.
I know, I should have stuck with fishing. But I was worse at that.
Thanks!

Re: Question about Depth of Field
Just view from top view and you can determine where the dof will hit or create a null via element and use that as a reference coordinate.

Re: Question about Depth of Field
I'll check that out tomorrow when I get to the office. I don't have AE on this laptop. So, does it show a cone or something? Is it pretty clear when I go to top view? That makes me think of something: To bad AE doesn't have viewports like 3DS or C4D.

Re: Question about Depth of Field
It will show a rectangle that will move forward and backwards with the adjustment.
And you can also have multiple views at the same time, I believe up to four

Going along with what JPT7505 mentioned, @12:27 in this tutorial it mentions the DOF settings with E3D: https://youtu.be/YWrYruCQ5H4?t=12m27s

I like using Malty's simple camera rig to make a lot of things easier.
