Incredibly simple question - Saber & AE

New to Saber and AE (on a windows machine) so please forgive my ignorance.

To me, the effects seem to apply to (for lack of a better description) a "line", whether that is a straight line, a circle or square.

I have an geometrically complex image (not just a simple line, square or circle) To apply the Saber effects to the outer edge of the image, is it just as simple as masking off the image and then apply? And how would you prevent the Saber effect from 'spilling over' into the interior of the image?

I am sure this is simple, but wanted to ask. It was not apparently clear to me from the Youtube video. Thanks!
