What do the pros do? Map/Terrain animations

I've discussed this with a couple of colleagues, while struggling with some map animations myself, and we all found ourselves wondering the same thing: where do the agencies, broadcast networks like Discovery, etc., get all their hi-res, adaptable map magic? It's one thing to grab some vector outlines and get cracking; it can work wonders for some projects, but when you need more textured terrain with elevation, dare I say some 3D, stock only goes so far.

There seem to be a lot of options but nothing that feels right. We've messed with GIS data; ArcGIS, QGIS, and played around with DEMS in C4D but nothing is very intuitive. Anyone have thoughts on industry standards for these resources. It always comes down to adding your own great design but it needs to be built on a real world foundation. Where does everyone go and what tools do they use to create killer 2D and 3D maps?

Are you looking for 3d maps that replicate true geo locations or just look like it could exist in real life?

There are several cool programs for creating 3d terrain that may help.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm mostly looking for real locations and more stylized, less realistic.
