Photo JPEG - not truly black?

Postby Woodman on 02/3/2012, 9:22 am

I was making a video in AE, when I wanted to fade-in the beginning from black and than I noticed when using the quicktime Format and than the Photo JPEG type. (the one Andrew suggested) the black is not truly black. but when using the Mpeg format it is black.

this is what I mean (just a black solid for example):

but as far as I can remember it wasn't like that. did I changed something?

settings are all on best.

are you fading from a black solid or from transparency, also, although photojpeg is good, its a bit more lossy than say animation or uncompressed codecs. Plus quicktime tends to add a slight gamma shift when files are played, this might be your issue. try reimporting into ae if the prob goes away then no worries just qt being dumb. otherwise, try a different codec. :D

Play your file in something other than QT, it should work just fine. As someone's mentioned, QT Player messes with your gamma settings. I've never known wether it can be corrected as I simply don't use it at all.
I hardly think it's the jpges fault. If you still think it may be, dropping it into photoshop or ae and checking wether that colour is 0.0.0 may be a good idea.

This page has some Quicktime gamma shift suggestions.
