Digital Cinema or 3D/Game Animation Degree???

Postby JDiggyDawg90 on 03/15/2016, 12:10 pm

Hello everyone, I was wondering if I could get some advice/opinions on what degree would be more beneficial to follow at my university. I'm currently a Sophomore at Utah Valley University in the Digital Cinema degree. My ultimate goal is to do VFX and Motion Graphics for a living, but my current degree only offers two Visual Effects classes throughout the entire program. Do you guys think it would be more beneficial for me to switch over to a 3D/Game Design degree so I can get more better skill set in Animation/Compositing to be able to achieve the goals I'm wanting? Here's a link to both of the degrees. Any help on deciding whether I should switch would be great!

It could go both ways. Cinema degree teachers you cameras, lighting, angles, etc. That is invaluable when trying to composite. It also gives you a solid understanding of how to setup a scene, light, colours, etc.

On the flip side, knowing 3d tools, character animation, etc. is pretty valuable too.

If you want to do motion graphics, I'd do game animation. It'll teach you animation, 3d, etc. If you want to do compositing, I'd stay with the cinema degree and learn Nuke/After Effects/Fusion (which ever one you decide on) via online sources.

That's just my 2 cents.

For VFX, if you want to end up at a high end studio, major in math, physics, programming with a minor in art.

Awesome, thanks guys for the info! I'm also going to talk to my school advisor to see what option would be best as well so I can make my best educated choice.

You might think animation for video games and animation for movies are really the same thing. That's a fairly common misconception. Even though the same tools and principles of animation apply to both mediums, the processes and techniques actually differ greatly between the two.
Complete any of the above course with full dedication ....if it's your passion then nothing can stops you.
Do what your heart drives to do .
