cinema 4d: texture won't stick on animated text please help!

Postby elementsk8er506 on 11/18/2009, 4:57 pm

hey there

i have 3d text i made with an extrude nurb

i added a grunge material on it and then animated the text floating up

when i preview it, the texture doesnt "stick" to it...it looks as if the texture is static and just the actual
text itself is moving

the projection i have set now is cubic, i dont know why its not working, i have the material on the
extrude nurbs layer by the way, i dont know if that matters

what can i do? thankyou

You cant animate the text object. Sure the texture doesnt stick, becuase it sticks to the extrude nurbs object.
Imagine your texture as a big infinite picture and your nurbs as a spot where its visualized (i.e. a part of the "picture" you can see). Moving the text object and not the nurbs will result into "showing" another part of your texture, which might look as though it didnt stick.
So to solve your issue, simply animate the nurbs object. Oh, and Id recommed to set the projection to UVW mapping.

thanks for the reply guys,

sli[p],
i tried going render settigs> anti aliasing> filter> animation, but it did not solve the texture problem

alt64,
i tried to set the texture on the extruded text to UVW mapping, but when i did, the front cap part wasnt textured...it was only the sides...which is why i chose cubic so it got everything. is there any easier way to texture the grunge texture mateiral onto it without having to unwrap?

a friend told me that the reason the texture was moving like that was because i was "projecting" the material onto it, and not actually texturing it...is there an easier way to do it?

alt64,
your mentioning of animating the nurbs object seems like a good idea...i was curious, is there a way to just parent the animation features from the extrude to it...so it will line it up perfectly?

thanks

The only ways to do it is by either parenting your projection to your text, so it will animate with it. Don't know if it is possible in C4D, but you should be able to. You could also unwrap your text and then texture it or just do a simple UVW projection, such as a box... Those are your only options

As for the mapping: yes, you are right, UVW doesnt do very well, although its usually the best choice for most objects. But it sucks on nurbs... I havent been working with C4D for some time so I just didnt realize it. :? Cubic is fine, so is spatial.

And the second question... hmm I dont quite understand. Maybe its just the way C4D works and other apps dont... Have you used any other 3D app before? You cant think of nurbs as a modifier (thats the way it works in max, at least I think so), its just a separate object in cinema. The text itself isnt anything, NURBS is what you can see and move around.
So I guess you dont need to parent its animation no anything else, its already fine as it is. But maybe I just didnt get your point :(

Hope it helps
