building 3d sets

Postby badmonk on 06/23/2017, 2:51 am

Just been looking on youtube and trying to find a good docu or tutorial about making CG movies, actually the main thing I am trying to find out is 3D sets.

I would like to know, and I guess everyone is different, but what would the work flow be for building your scene please?

I know, story, screenplay, modelling, animation, texturing, rendering etc etc but I cant find much info on 3D sets.

Say for e.g your scene is set in a town, do you build the entire town first? or just build what you need for that particular scene? i.e the first room and would you build a room with a 'floating' wall you move back and forth for the camera etc

any info would be great as like I said, I cannot find any good videos covering the process of 3D sets within 3D animations

thank you

Thank you but I am talking about 3D sets for CG animation. Not live action but thanks anyway.

Not sure what you mean by set - it's modelled, like anything else...There's no special thing with it, it's just textured, shaded 3D meshes, lit and rendered - no special sauce compared to anything else in 3D.

When we talk digital sets in comp, it's not about 3D animated stuff but set extensions, matte paintings, fakery, like 2D stuff projected on 3D models or displaced geometry, like I did in this thing : https://vimeo.com/174932427 - and sometimes you don't even need 3D - the sharks here were rendered out of Houdini but this environment is a 100% 2D composite, all fakery. :)

But to get back to your question, for something like an animated movie, sets, well, you just build what you need in any 3D app... :)

thanks for the reply, sorry its prob me not being clear, so apologies for that.

Yeah i guess if i am doing a scene in a city then i build the whole city, plus a skybox i.e surrounding background etc
sorry i think i have the workflow but wanted to double check what others do, but i guess there is 101 ways of doing things and each is open to individual preference :)

Mist of the time it's some VFX supervisor who says how he wants it set up, if you're lucky it's in a way you agree is reasonable, so it's a gamble for sure... ;)
