Help Moving 3D not Rotating the Model

Postby GoldenTiger on 02/20/2017, 3:08 pm

Hello all

I have an issue where I'd like to rotate around an object in 3D versus rotating the actual model,
I imported a model from E3D, in this case was an aircraft I positioned it in the center.
I clicked my Camera and added a camera in AF., I wanted to rotate around the aircraft but when I play it back?
it looks like I'm rotating the actual model.

how can I get the perception That I'm going around the model using my camera instead of making look like the model is the one rotating?

Thanks so much in advance
have a wonderful day

You need a background, it could be water, the ocean horizon, or just some stationary particles is the air.

I have my background but it looks like model is rotating
is there any good in detail tutorial out there about this?

I know Andrew Kramer in his tutorials he has some good ones in the aircraft line but he doesn't go in detail showing different great camera moves
going around the aircraft.

Well? I need to play with it more but it would be nice if there is a tutorial out there that I can use to do this and speed up the process

Thanks so much in advance for any help coming.

Well if the background is 360 it will work, could you upload a screenshot?

what I need is a camera move going around the aircraft
the background has nothing to do with it.

I want to animate a camera move going around the aircraft from bottom around the top view

Thanks

The background has everything to do with it. It gives the viewer reference points and lets the brain know that the "camera" is moving, rather than the model rotating.

Hello Clark

Thanks for writing and sorry for my ignorance
can you point out to me a tutorial somewhere where they show this process?
I'd like to put a camera at front of the aircraft looking at the bottom part then the camera will move around to top view on an angle side view

Please see my pictures attached to see what I'm trying to achieve.
Thanks so much in advance

It sounds like what you need is a combination between 3d set extension with multiple background cloud images. You could also use TrapCode to generate the clouds in 3d space, or 3d layers for cloud images with transparency overlays and feathered in...sort of like the turn Andrew did in Bullet Time.

Skybox Studio seems to be very popular for this kind of thing. Alternatively, you could try playing around with CC Environment.

Well element has an environment object. Just grab an hdri of a sky and add it in.

Hello there

I'm still having a problem rotating the camera around the aircraft from top view in a radius form,
I do it but when the camera is rotating my plane shakes up and down and side to side as it rotates.

how can I make my plane stay still and stop shaking as it rotates?
what am I doing wrong?

Please, help
what is the tip to rotate the camera smooth, I'm adding an expression to it "wiggle(.5, 40) or wiggle(1,30)
my plane keeps moving up and down and side to side as the camera is rotating.

I'll really appreciate your help
Thanks

The wiggle expression is what's making your model shake. You don't need it.

it shakes, well it doesn't shake, it moves up and down and side to side whether I put it or not
the reason I put it is because Andrew Kramer talks about this in his tutorial of the commercial plane in Element 3D.

but in mine, my plane moves up and down and side to side as it rotates.

I pulled the model from Element 3D and put it into a Solid layer in AF,
I put my background
I added a Null layer, now as move my null layer in X,Y,Z Axis and animate this it looks nice in either axis,
but when I animate a rotational move, that's when my plane moves up and down, side to side as the camera rotates.

is there any tutorial where it shows a rotational camera move on a plane?

Thanks

Try this.

Create your model in Element, with environment. Save and exit to AE.
Create a camera.
Create a null object. Make it 3D
Parent the camera to the null.
In the E3D Render Settings, go to Physical Environment and tick Show In BG.
Rotate the Null.

That's all you have to do to achieve a simple and smooth effect.

Thanks so much Gerry
I'll check it out
I'm so curious to know why my model moves up and down and side to side as camera rotates
hopefully with your help I'll find out what I'm doing wrong.

I'll let you know, I have to try this tonight.

Talk tom you later

By the way Garry,
is that file from Af is going to work in my system?
I have CS5.5

Yes,
I'd like to rotate a camera animation around the plane from top view.
but when I do this, my plane is moving slowly up and down and side to side as it's rotating in a radius form.
I 'd like to make the rotation smooth and rigid.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

Sorry

How am I animating the camera?

after I imported the model aircraft from E3D into AF with all its settings,
First I created a NULL layer which is attached to the model because if I move my NULL layer, my aircraft moves with it
then I created a Camera, I get the 35mm and sometimes the 80mm as Andrew Kramer says.
I made my layers 3D
in my timeline ZERO, I put my aircraft in Position, in this case use my pictures I posted here as ref., get the one that is looking from bottom view.
I click the watches for Position and point of interest
then I move my model to my second position to the second shot of my pictures posted, the one from top view
I rotated to this position using the Camera icon

I play it back and I don't have a smooth\Rigid rotation,
it rotates but it's not smooth and rigid, my aircraft is moving around slowly until it comes into position.
I can't understand why?

Thanks
Freddy

how do you rotate the Null Object layer?
I just can move the Null Object layer by dragging the X-axis or Y-axis or Z-axis
but I cannot rotate.
maybe this is the problem

I'm using the Camera icon and click on my screen until my aircraft comes into position I want,
except when I play it back my aircraft is moving around as it rotates.

Let me play more with the Null object and the parenting settings
but how do you rotate the Null Object?

Thanks

To rotate the null:
Select the null layer. Press "r" on your keyboard.
The rotate controls will appear. Keyframe as usual.

I'm afraid my example file won't play on your system but it really shouldn't be necessary.

Can I also respectfully suggest that you take some time to go back to the basic tutorials? If you're having difficulty at this level of animation then After Effects will become very frustrating for you.

Good luck.

Hello Garry

Good Morning!

I worked on my project last night and I found out that yes, you were right,
it's working when
I parent the Null Object layer to the camera and Null Object layer needs to be in 3D,
the thing I was doing wrong here is that when I had them parent I was using my camera icon to make my animation but
when you are using Null Object layer you shouldn't use the camera icon here instead you should use the Null Object layer for all the animation as you said
by using the tools of (move and rotate) for objects and to apply key frames to the Null object layer only.
I didn't know this, now I know, it's looking good now.

there is only one thing it's NOT coming out perfect doing this and using these tools,
it's making the plane coming from far behind on the left side of your screen and making a small turn to come straight to you and sore come up over your head.
that radius move when it turns to come up to you it's not easy to make, I know I will do it but it looks I need to spend sometime to making it move and behave as a normal plane does but I was just wondering if is there any tool available in after effects that I can use for more complicated moves in a plane to make it behave as a normal plane, especially in radius long path making a small turn.
or is this the only one way and I just have to spend the time doing it until I get right?

see my pictures of what I'm trying to do from Youtube clip I found
Thanks so much Garry
