Simple. The Skills of the artist using them. They are all good, they all do essentially the same thing, it is a matter of personal preference.

Hehe, that is simplifying it a lot, Plae. ;)

I would say they are more or less suited for different things - or more important, used more or less in different areas of the industry. So for people looking for work in particular areas, it might be suitable to focus on the one used in their biggest area of interest.

Just looking to these applications, C4D is mainly used for motion graphics and archviz. 3ds Max is also used a lot in archviz but also in game development and to some extent for FX work. Maya is basically the backbone for animation, crowds, muscle, skin and cloth, in many (or even most-) VFX studios.

Oh, and in regard to the people who say no software is better than another, that's just not true - but it needs to be asked in relation to a specific task. There's just no question these applications have their strengths in certain areas and they most definitely have their weaknesses too. So one of these applications can absolutely be better or worse than another for a specific task.

...and then you add plugins into the mix. :P

Don't forget Modo!

I'm a 3ds Max for 25 years user and lately I decide to study Modo.
The modeling part in Modo is impressive!
