Great video but how do you get the glitch to wipe off the same direction it wiped in. just like the word "presents" at 0:29. when the glitch animates on then off again, it just reverses direction but i want it going the same direction. I tried animating the Invert matte but it just makes it disappear. what am i doing wrong?

Thank you so much for your new tutorial! I love the way your tutorials are made. The content is always awesome and absolute inspiring (compound blur, unbelievable! i never heard of that before), but the best thing is: all your tutorials are so stylish! Cool background music, and watching your steps and follow your ideas is so much fun.

Love the video! Just one problem that I seem to be having. At the start, as shown, I duplicate the fractal noise effect and set the copy's overflow to 'clip' and the transfer mode to 'screen'. But, now whenever I go back and change the contrast or brightness of the original fractal noise, it suddenly disappears and all I see is the copy of the second fractal noise effect in preview. No values work apart from the original ones I set for the fractal noise...? checked my settings and they are the same and tried it in the project file provided and still the same issue. Has anyone else experienced this?
    Robert
Yep, I'm getting that exact same issue. One work-around is to adjust the settings of the second fractal effect, then it will start working again. This works until you change anything on the first fractal effect, then it breaks. It was driving me crazy so in the end I just turned off the second fractal effect.

In one tutorial there are several techniques that together give this excellent result. It is essential to know the possibilities of each effect and to make the best use of it. Congratulations, Andrew and Video Copilot!

Hello! quick question, sorry. Um so when you rotate the text files to change the direction the glitch is coming in at. I tried to replace that with a png and do the exact same thing to hopefully get the glitch coming in at the 45 degree angle but it wont respond the same way the text did vs the logo png? any advice on that? like it works but only on the text file and completely flips the PNG.

Glad to see you back in action Andrew! I've been following you since Team Fortress 2 came out if that gives you any kind of time frame.
While following your step by step instructions, every time I apply the Fast Box Blur to the displacement map layer, the scene falls apart. It will not animate at all, it just sits there. If I delete the effect, now the animation acts as if the fractal is a strobe light and you can't see the text come in as a glitch. It's not there, and then it is.
Any ideas on this? I've opened the project file you have and it works fine, I'm just trying to create this from scratch to use in my own project.
Go to project and disable the mercury playback engine. That can cause some issues with GPU effects.

It's really interesting and a little sad to hear Andrew talk about getting a job in the industry. I have been studying visual effects and 3D modelling for maybe 12 years now and I find it difficult to find work, I feel like hard work and thousands of hours just isn't enough anymore. I dunno maybe it's just me, I still continue to to work hard and really try to push myself but it gets really difficult with little success.

Great videos anyways!

Thanks Andrew Kramer! Amazing how much you can do with displacement maps and I did not know about that compound blur. Blew my mind!

I was hoping for a tutorial where I could remove someone's limb, say an arm or leg, for use in action scenes. Showing that the limbs can be removed while there is camera movement during an action scene. Green or blue sleeves or leggings can be keyed but having a camera movement on the action, then recreating the same movement for the plate can prove to be a nightmare. I was hoping there is another way this can be done through AE.

One thing I always have trouble wrapping my head around:
When do I have to pre-comp layers so effects work correctly? Like with Glow or a Displacement Map.
Is there a way to easily explain it?
It depends on what you are doing with the comp Holgor. There are many reasons why you would and a few reasons why you wouldn't.

Here's an example. Lets say you have a layer (text) that you would like to add effects too and also have the text in 3D space. once you have created the text layer, and pre comped it, any effects you add to that comp, are always applied to anything in the comp. So, you add all your effects then decide you want to change to text to a different script or even a logo. If you go into the comp to change the text, or switch it out with a logo its instantly updated in the original project and all the effects and positioning is applied. if you duplicated the comp at all for any reason it will also update the duplicates which is always useful and speedy.

Also some After Effects effects work better when applied to text of anything with an alpha channel, when applied to a comp rather than to the text directly.

There will be several others who will reply with many other reasons and examples, but this should get you started.

Also try youtubing the question to see other perspectives.

A pre-comp renders itself before it renders anything in the current comp so think of it more as a render order change than a modifier to layers or effects
    3 months ago
for me precomping is usefull for many reasons. First of all is applying the same effect so multiple layers, which cant be done by adjustmentlayers because you need some kind of alpha channels or parenting. Second reason for precompong is non destructiv-workflow, aspecially when you need to swap elements. third and last i mention of many more reasons is rendertime, because if you need a layer stack for multiple layers, then you lower the over all rendertime. pre-comps are rendered first in the comp depth.
    Holgor
Thanks, guys! The render order change sounds like it explains what I have trouble understanding with.

To help keep the copy in the spot you have it in your precomp, multiply the displacement effects in your map comp over 50% grey, and also make sure to "Curves" the alpha after the "Set Matte" effects in your min glitch comp. Also would need to tweak "Colorama" so the white colour (or whatever your end colour desired) is half way on the wheel. Hope that makes sense.

I'm getting a colored outline around the text when using colorama, having already unchecked the modify pixels etc. and my displacement map is fully white..

Anyway, great tutorial, the color glow is a great idea, good way to add glow to seperate channels, red for example often needs a bit more glow than the other colors, so by seperating it you can have more control over the glow by compositing each channel. Awesome stuff!

It's is, and it happens even if it isn't.. So odd, never had this happen before with Colorama. Footage or text, same thing, just a slight 1px outline. Looks like it may even be subpixel, as it isn't consistent all around it

Great tutorial, as always!

Showtime has been using a similar effect for some of their promos. I was trying to figure out how they were doing that. Somewhat like the pixel sorting, or pixel stretching, effect.

I wonder if this is how Elastic created some of the stretch effects for their "Halt and Catch Fire" title.

Thanks again, Andrew!
