New Show and New workflow Plug-in!

Some cool news to announce! We have just finished recording a horrifying new blog show with a frightening theme! But more on that next week!

Another exciting development is a a new workflow plug-in for After Effects! Coming this week!

Now, this plug-in doesn’t make light sabers or energy fx, it might not even change your life, but this utility we developed will speed up your AE work flow! Embarrassingly enough, the development began last year when I started working on Intercept! And while I am still finishing the VFX for my short, this new plug-in is done and so we’re going to release it! Is that progress!? I DON’T KNOW!!

The good news is we’re jamming on a lot of projects behind the scenes, but this year has been a very humbling and rejuvenating experience for me. And it is simply managing ideas and execution. How do we continue to push ourselves creatively and build better consistency… I don’t know if we have it all figured out, but at least we are asking the right questions now!

For example : Here was my thought process on the Saber plug-in:

  1. Man, my short film is taking way too long I need to release something cool now that I’m back from Star Wars!
  2. Let’s release the Saber plug-in. That thing is pretty cool!
  3. I haven’t posted cool stuff in a while though, This plug-in needs to be sweet!
  4. I Should make a trailer too! How long will that take?
  5. S#!T The plug-in is just not good enough yet and it comes out in two days!
  6. Let’s add more features! Let’s add displacement noise and presets! We can make it!
  7. Crap! We’re late! Now this thing really has to be amazing! Let’s add text outlines and mask shapes too!
  8. What have we done!

Being late because of high expectations makes my expectations higher. A dangerous loop.

So you can see the real challenge is I want to make awesome stuff but it’s easy to underestimate how much time it takes to pull it off! (Cough Cough, Intercept!)

This year we added some fantastic new people to the VC Team and I’m able to get everyone more involved in our shows and do more simultaneous projects that are spread out over time so there are things always in development and more people can be involved in finishing projects.

I think at the end of the day, walking around with a Video Copilot apron has really helped my focus!

Office is on fire now!

Where are the Tutorials! + NAB 2017!
Yo Andrew! Where are all the Tutorials!?! A reasonable question actually. I don’t have a simple answer but maybe I can share a bit of my process with you. This year I’ve been working on a bunch of amazing content for Video Copilot! My goal was to dig deep into default plug-ins and try to […]
I'm Sorry Shape Layers! I love you!
I must confess… I was never a big fan of shape layers…  we just didn’t get along.  I was used to using masks but suddenly (around AE CS3) the same mask tool began creating Red vector shapes. At first, they seemed cool enough but after accidentally adding shape layers to my comps, instead of masks, I lashed […]

Hey .. Andrew This is my 6th comment and every time i post any comment it says "Your comment in being moderated "something like that..
Well l'm just curious about the plugin "Bad As*" you showed us in the Sci Fi weapon tutorial and i love the render of ignite you posted. I actually tried that effect a long time ago but couldn't get the desired result. Just one request when you upload E3D renders please upload the effect panel too (E3D Settings) so we can have at least an idea how you created those effects. Thanks

Dude if you know about some action video shots where dusts falling , debris, glasses breaking down something like that then you will truly understand the importance of that plugin. in some cases the actors requires more attention towards the camera as Andrew did in tutorial

I am certainly looking forward to Intercept, I saw the trailer and was blown away by the production values, it had me thinking of Michael Mann, Christopher Nolan quality about it, and at the end with the heli it made me think about the heli in Escape from New York, with a tad of Blade cine and the Avengers thrown in, so I am up for eating the popcorn when this rolls out..

I started following VCP since Disintegration tutorial (2009 i guess). There used to be a new tutorial once in every 2 weeks. I learned a LOT from VCP, the fascination it creates, keeps me pushing forward in my career. Currently I'm a Senior Match move artist working in hollywood movies. My job is more technical than artistic, So these days I do AfterFX as a hobby to keep myself from getting bored. Its been almost 8 yrs and I still keep following VCP. Though there are only very less frequent posts these days, VCPs standard of work has grown really high. It doesn't matter if it takes longer time if the final results are going to blow you away. The growth in your standard of work is gonna induce growth in a huge number of peoples skill-set. Theres huge community growing along with you VCP. You never cease to Amaze us.
Andrew Kramer, You're AWESOME!!!
Thanks for everything!

In fairness, I just want one that says "I graduated from Video CoPilot University"...

Pleases? Pretty pleases?

Andrew not trying to troll at all here but serious question. Intercept is well over a year late. Since filming it your skills have probably increased dramatically working on Star Wars and other projects. Do you ever look at Intercept now and think to just scrap it? Do you look at it as something that today you could of made much better if you started to shoot it now? And how do you find the motivation to even want to finish it since it was started so long ago and you have so many other awesome things in the works.
    Dan
Why scrap something? That would be like asking Stanley Kubrick (if he were still alive) if he'd go back and redo 2001... the work should stand on its own, regardless!
It's going to be finished!!! Of course there are things I wish I did differently here and there but certainly the raised standards of working on feature films has elevated expectations!

I actually love working on it but then I realize a week goes by and I want to make sure to post some cool stuff on the site and so I try to mix it up.

I'm sure AK is doing a mighty fine job on his short whilst (don't forget) running a phenomenally successful and awesome company (VC) and being a father to 4, yes 4 kids and husband to his wife.

I shot a fantasy short film in 2010 with extremely high expectations and post/vfx ended up taking 18 months to complete so know how it goes. Sometimes things take way longer than hoped or expected and I for one can't wait to see Intercept when it is finally ready to show the VC community and the rest of the world.

Post us all the link MLH so we can show our support.

I've come across a few bugs inside Element and thought this might a good, if not the best, occasion to write it down.

So here you go, my fixes and ideas for Element 3D V.3.0:
- Fix where Ray-Traced Shadows on materials with an alpha channel don't show the outlines of the original material, but rather the outline of the alpha.
- Fix where the "Light Influence" option doesn't get disabled when using Ray-Traced Shadows in combination with Ray-Traced Ambient Occlusion (on low end or average graphics cards).
- Fix where the (4K) reflections are shown sharp and in High Quality inside the preview box of Element, but are Low Quality in the work composition.

I don't mind waiting, because you always come out with the best.

Only wish is for Element 3d to support 4K monitor. I set up AF text and icons large for 4K but as soon i switch to Element 3D it is microscopic. Also i would love if is possible to scale individual textures as one texture would be perfect but another need scaling so it would distort first one. Also with scaling texture if is possible to have lock icon on side so when scaling it would proportionally scale texture. Example texture is scaled 20% on X and 12% on Y now if there is lock icon it would scale in that proportions rather than recalculating and than manually typing x and y size

If we are going to get aN Element 3D v3.0 can it please include importing .FBX?
Looking forward to see what you have cooked up! :) )

A big wish for Element 3D v3.0
-Better, more accurate reflections. Since ray-traced reflections are too heavy for realtime 3d, reflection probes (multiple reflection spheres you can place on appropriate locations) would be a great addition.
