Where are the Tutorials! + NAB 2017!
Yo Andrew! Where are all the Tutorials!?! A reasonable question actually. I don’t have a simple answer but maybe I can share a bit of my process with you. This year I’ve been working on a bunch of amazing content for Video Copilot! My goal was to dig deep into default plug-ins and try to […]
I'm Sorry Shape Layers! I love you!
I must confess… I was never a big fan of shape layers…  we just didn’t get along.  I was used to using masks but suddenly (around AE CS3) the same mask tool began creating Red vector shapes. At first, they seemed cool enough but after accidentally adding shape layers to my comps, instead of masks, I lashed […]

you can create your creative 3D designs in AB3DXtd in minutes, and import it directly to Element3D to play with it your way

why element 3d does not support intel graphics cards,
all mac book pro runs intel graphics card so why it happens #andrew i have macbook pro late 2015 whit 3.7ghz processor and 16gigs of ram please andrew doo something...please..

what should i do should i buy an elternal gpu for my mac book pro????
Intel graphics cards are intergrated, meaning they aren't good quality, and intergrated means not a real dedicated graphics card, intergrateds are weak, so even the most ram and cpu in the world cant help it. Also you cannot have a dedicated gpu without a gaming pc

Hi ANdrew,
Been following your website for as far back as I can remember. I am a hobbiest with AE CS-5 and want to up my game. I have done some of your tutorials, but they just don't come out like your final render. Are there any Training Organizations in the Los Angeles area you might recommend. I drove by your Lake Elsinore suite last year, but I think you were deep into post on Star Wars. I'm a little long in the tooth, 58 years old, but have been working on some children's animation and live action video. Any recommendations would be most appreciated. I am a Mac OSX user and have CS-5 suite as well as Blender 3D.
Thanks. So good to have you back.

Since a few guys here are suggesting update features for E3D I like to suggest the cookie cutter tool. Where you can use a shape (made with a mask or the internal primitives) to cut another shape (ans a smoother function). If this is possible E3D will have the advantage over all 3D modelling programs and you can make the most complex objects right in E3D. But if this is too far fetched, would it be a possible feature to use the arrow keys to move things around in the E3D scene? and a more easy way to adjust the anchor point? Thanks in advance!

Andrew, i love your work very, very much, and it's so good and exciting, that now you are working with J. J.!) I follow you from "3D reflections" tutorial, and you've made a giant work!

I wanna ask two questions: what kind of light do you usually use - point or parallel, and could you please make a tutoril about compositing (dust, color grading, some other stuff). I cannot understand, how do you reach this sharp and glossy view of your image. Oh, and maybe you do some things with a depth of field? Thank you.

Hi Andrew,

You've done a lot of tutorials on Element and its features. Can you please do a tutorial on how to get more realism out of element. I'd like to move on from a good openGL animation to a realistic world. Somehow my renders will have pixels etc which gives away that it is not real. I hope you can do a few scenes from this awesome short (with project files :P)

Best,

Robert

Hi Andrew,

As a greenscreen and element 3d 2.,2 compositor, I must say Element is starting to take the position of 3dmax+Vray in rendering. I was wondering the camcoder you used on Sam's shots. 9 months ago
I've seen those. Need portability though. Looks like some notebooks (pc) are coming out in August or September that have the 1070.

Without sounding like an endorsement, I've been using cards in our Mac towers that are custom flashed. We have a GTX 780 in one and the new 980ti in another.
    Koz
I'm on the fence between the 1060 and the 1070. Mainly the 6gb vs 8gb VRAM. I'm currently using a 970sc 4gb and pretty happy with it, so 6gb might be more than enough...but then the 1080 is only an extra $100, and you can never have too much VRAM...ugh...I'm just happy I went with a windows box instead of the macpro trashcan. Those firepro cards are lookin' pretty sad right now.

@Daniel, @hans123 Whatever... It's important to me, but who cares? It still doesn't work. If you have a composition with 3D Layers (not E3D), the AE Camera Settings (bokeh) works very well. Not, if you would have the same effect on a E3D Layer (in my experience). Try out "Depth of Field" from the Plugin Lenscare (Frischluft). At first you should duplicate your
E3D Layer and set the output to "Z-Depth", then hide this duplicated Layer. Use this Layer as a "depth layer" for the plugin "Depth of Field". Maybe you must tweak the E3D Z-Depth Layer with "Curves" to have a grayscale from
nearly black to white (Z-axis). Try it out.

Loved it! Anyone know what was used to create the more "stretched" realistic looking bokeh on the close-ups on the roof instead of the more circular ones that Camera Lens Blur typically renders? Was it achieved by lowering the Aspect Ratio in the settings? Thanks!
    Duncan
Scratch that. I think I figured it out. In case anyone is interested, I got similar results by lowering the Aspect Ration from 1.0 to 0.4, increasing the Roundness to 100% and increasing the Diffraction Fringe to something between 300-500. I found that also adding a Noise effect with around 5% noise before applying the Camera Lens Blur effect also helps to make the shot seem more "alive" if it's a still image or CG background.

Hi Andrew,
this is the best short film I have seen on videocopilot so far, well done man!
My question is, what tool did you use other than TP to cut the geo used in the shockwave ground explosion?
is there any other tool or this is a simply TP volume breaker in action?

I will be waiting for the TP tutorial for this, so excited about it, keep it up.

thanks!

Thanks Biagio. It's crazy how much time little things make. But they are important to me. Whether it is a VFX or breakdown of a shot to just making a simple joke in the video to make it more fun

Needless to say, this is really super, and almost unbelievable...all done in AE? That's incredible!
Anyway...I think an in depth tutorial on how correctly light up and render a photorealistic E3D scene, is pretty urgent and would be very useful to all us VCpiloters.

Cheers

Well, the show was awesome, but I didn't know anything how to make these awesome renders, how to light the 3D scene, etc.
    Daniel
If only the upcoming tutorials would focus a little more on how to achieve this killing renders with Element 3D...
    Koz
If you take any given scene with whatever models & textures, and import them into Element, V-ray, Octane ETC, and set up the lights the same way in all 3, your results will be almost identical. In fact I find I often get BETTER results using E3D than Octane (I render at 4k and downscale to 1080p when using Element) probably because the speed lets you experiment more to get it just right...& with Element, there's the added bonus of not having to wait until I'm old and gray to actually see the finished render.

This is awesome! In the past year, I've been delving more and more into Cinema 4D and less in After Effects. Seeing Andrew's work always reminds me that I can accomplish a LOT with Element 3D and After Effects without having to deal purely with a 3D software like C4D.

Can't wait to try some of these out!
Impaczus
Sometimes I dont believe you when you say youve done the rendering entirely in Element.. that cant be real.. the shot looks so photo-real.. and even if we replicated your comp settings by settings, it still wouldnt look as good as yours.. is there a secret sauce to all this?
There are tricks! Raytrace AO helps a lot and trying to light cinematically. But needless to say, I'm going to be diving into exactly how I did it!

@hans123 Jesus Christ, man, I already said I know all about the Iris Settings below the camera in the timeline! Are you paying attention? I said these settings don't work when I use them. I change the values on the rotation and aspect ratio, but nothing happens. I don't know why. Anyway, thanks for the tips. Maybe it'll work on a different version of AE, I dunno. If it works for you, congratulations. All I know is that it doesn't work for me.

@Robin I know all about the Camera Options in the timeline. Like I said, I've been using them for years. And I've played with the settings in the Iris Shape, but nothing happens. I don't know if it's just the version of After Effects that has this problem, but any changes I make in the Iris settings or aspect ratio -- Nothing happens! Maybe I'm dumb, maybe I should use a new version of AE, maybe this is only happening to me. I dunno. Thanks for the tips anyhow.

This must be a joke. I haven't found any option at all to change any bokeh settings in the After Effects camera. I've been using the program for years, so I should've known by now if you could. If anyone has any information about how you can change your bokeh without using any third-party plugin, please let me know. And even the third-party plugins aren't doing anything that you can't do within the program. But it would be easier if someone could just help me out.

@fivepointseven How exactly? I've been doing animations with Element 3D and with the After Effects for years, and I haven't seen any option to change the shape of the bokeh. I'm using After Effects CS6.
    Robin
In the timeline, twirl open your camera and under Camera Options you'll find Iris Shape. You can change it from a 'Fast Rectangle' to a Decagon. There are several other options there, for Rotation, roundness, Diffraction Fringe etc.

But how did you make the Anamorphic/oval bokeh with the 3D elements? Did you use the CC Camera Lens Blur with a Depth Pass from Element 3D? That's the only way I know of achieving that effects without using the DoF from the After Effects camera, which has spherical bokeh.

Amazing, so great to see your back with full force :) VC makes working in after effects so much more fun, even though I dont work with similar work as you guys Im getting a lot of good ideas that can be transfered to the work I do.

Btw, Im also curious about your computer setup. How much do a better GPU benefit in Element 3D. Im currently working on an iMac with AMD Radeon R9 M295X. Since Element 3D is GPU dependent, would I notice a lot of speed gain with a pc and GTX 1080 ? Or is After Effects limiting the speed gains?
