Hot new tutorial on the way!

I found some time to play in After Effects this weekend and here is another experiment that doesn’t use any 3rd party plug-ins.

Although I will say that using our heat distortion plug-in would have been easier to create the heat waves. In fact, I was thinking about finally making this plug-in available for sale individually instead of inside the bundle, anyone else interested in that idea?

April 20th, 2014 @ 11:39 pm
Heck yeah.. that looks awesome
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:40 pm
YES! :) I am interested in the individaual plugin!
# First! :)
    April 21st, 2014 @ 8:17 am
Me too! Hope plug-in available individually
    April 23rd, 2014 @ 3:34 am
How are you #first when there's a comment already before yours?
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:41 pm
... THIS STUFF IS AMAZING ANDREW!! how do you com up with these greeat ideas?
how much time did you spend on it to get this nice effect?
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:43 pm
OMG!!!! i must watch that!!!!! i'm so excited!!!!
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:43 pm
Yes. I think that making the heat distortion plug-in is a great idea! Love your work! Keep on rockin!
    April 21st, 2014 @ 12:01 pm
Please keep the plug-in at a reasonable price. Like $15, unless you pack it with other extras.
    April 21st, 2014 @ 11:09 am
I think it will be 24.95. That is 25% of the of the bundled price for Flight Kit which makes it fair to previous customers. Plus it is a fun plug-in. The Flight Kit is still a great value because you get sound FX, explosion stock footage and environment maps...
    April 21st, 2014 @ 1:18 pm
$25 is great. Doing heat distortion is a pain. Totally worth that money.
    April 21st, 2014 @ 10:24 pm
I agree definitely ! If plug-in available individually, i must buy it! Cuz it's really very very powerful.
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 8:55 am
Gee. To think about a week or so ago I was debating whether to buy the bundle just for the plug-in and ended up buying it...
    April 23rd, 2014 @ 9:00 am
Any word on a release date for the plugin? I could use it on a project I'm currently working on. :)
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:44 pm
When do you think the tutorial will be up?
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:49 pm
Sure. When can we expect some tutorial?
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:51 pm
Oh, you are going to need these freebies to create such effects:

25 Free Lava Texture Collection for Flaming Designs
    Abalam Anderson
    April 21st, 2014 @ 1:51 pm
Wow. Thanks for this link!! This is just what I needed for my demonic text! >:)
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:53 pm
Wow, post the tutorial soon, i am not sleeping until then.
April 20th, 2014 @ 11:54 pm
definitely would be interested in heat haze as separate plugin!
Romain L.
April 21st, 2014 @ 12:01 am
Yeah, getting the heat distorsion plug-in individually would be great. But is there a Nuke version coming ?
April 21st, 2014 @ 12:16 am
i am a really big fan of you and your work to be honest you are called as the father of after effects.i just wanted to ask u that in future will it be possible to use custom rigged models in element because it would have been great.and ofcourse heat distortion plugin can be tweaked a bit more and can polished to be made availabe individually.
April 21st, 2014 @ 12:24 am
Yes me to, this is great plug-in... also can you plz tell me spec of your computer ?
April 21st, 2014 @ 12:31 am
That would be awesome! Can't wait for this tutorial. It is always good to know how to do it roughly...
The separate plug-in idea sounds great!
April 21st, 2014 @ 1:08 am
It reminds me of some old AE stuff I did before... I think the technique will be very similar. You can download the project files for free for warming up for the tutorial!
    April 21st, 2014 @ 9:39 am
Your project download link is not a link.
    April 21st, 2014 @ 9:41 am
Nevermind! I had to follow the link to the *other* version of the video and use that download link.
April 21st, 2014 @ 1:18 am
Andrew already believes in summer
fadel helal
April 21st, 2014 @ 1:31 am
Yes.....Thank you very much from an Iraqi man
April 21st, 2014 @ 1:37 am
I would like to see this plugin proposed individually, good idea !
April 21st, 2014 @ 1:55 am
Yes P:lease it would be an invaluable plugin. cant wait for the tutorial, thanks so MUCH!
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:04 am
I actually asked for that in the forums right after jet strike came out! please do!
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:12 am
Can we do it with "Fractal Noise" like alternate?
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:22 am
hiii andrew..can u plzzz make you made title credit for star trek.the one you publishd was gud need more elaborated one hw to make our own
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:27 am
You continue to amaze! I'm seriously looking forward to this
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:28 am
I think making heat distortion a separate plugin is a great idea. I know a lot of people have wanted this but hadn't had the money to buy the pack in comes in.

So yeah +1 for Heat Distortion
niels leslie
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:32 am
Yes!!!! To that plugin!!
Luis Martin
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:40 am
Definetely you should make the Heat Distortion Plug-in available individually, that would be awesome!!!! By this I don't mean for free. Really cool this new effect, I think this is what you meant with Custom Particles Systems when you talked about it in the Star Trek into Darkness Demo.
April 21st, 2014 @ 2:42 am
cant wait A Kramer sir u r a true legend
April 21st, 2014 @ 3:05 am
Looks good. Must be layers and layers of Turbulent Displace and CC Vector Blur plus a few other effects.
April 21st, 2014 @ 3:25 am
Yes please make the plugin available individually. I can not afford the aircraft pack just yet but I have a lot of uses for the heat distortion. Im in.
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:34 am
Nice work! I can't wait..
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:42 am
yup! the plugin would be useful.
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:49 am
YES ANDREW! You must do it! I would buy it immediately
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:51 am
yes yes yes it loooks cooooooooollll
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:55 am
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:07 am
Heat distortion plugin! Yes please :-) Maybe as an alternative way, so all non-customers can get similar results...
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:07 am
wow..another one exciting summer special
Fadi Hamid
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:10 am
You are awesome Andrew Kramer
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:23 am
Please! This looks like a great plugin. I don't need jet models but I could use this plugin!
Brent Willett
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:25 am
Yes, having the heat distortion plugin available individually would be great! I'm a motion graphic designer, and I can think of several uses for the plugin in my type of work, while I don't really have a reason to buy airplane related products.
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:43 am
YES! And how about to come up with your very own Videocopilot explosion/smoke/fire/cloud plug-in? It would a very nice addition to the family of your products...
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:47 am
We are very interested....
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:50 am
amzazing man but after this one please make the motionpulse trailer tutorial
David Vizurant
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:56 am
Yes, this would be a nice idea, but I think it would be unfair for the people who bought this plug-in in the Flight Kit Pack ...
    April 21st, 2014 @ 8:46 am
    How is this unfair??
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 8:57 am
Not unfair, but unfortunate.. as not too long ago I bought the Flight Kit Pack just for the plug-in, only to hear a week later, the plug-in may be available stand alone.
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 9:26 am
It will cost 24.95, if you already have it then, you don't need to buy it. Now customers will have more options to buy.
    April 27th, 2014 @ 8:01 am
We really need to stop complaining about these petty little " I could have saved xx had I waited 3 more weeks etc. Everything VCP offers is ridiculously underpriced to begin with, and the quality of the products is second to none. They have given us countless freebies over the years, not to mention all the training. FREE!! We need to support this site with our $$ so they can keep delivering these great products, and if that support comes in the form of some of us buying the flight kit even though we just needed the heat disto plug-in, feel good that your extra dollars are going to the right place (let's not forget you are getting a lot for your money in the flight kit, whether or not you had a need for it at the time). I would gladly pay extra or give monthly donations so we can see things like Element V2 and helicopter packs sooner (hint hint). Even though the Heat Distortion plug-in is now available separately, I think everyone who needs it should still buy the Flight-Kit just to show some support.
April 21st, 2014 @ 6:07 am
Yes. Separate. Please.
April 21st, 2014 @ 6:24 am
The coronary luminescence is similar, but on the surface I would add fractal nois (type: dynamic) and trapcode(shine). With close attention I watch your works, at you I adopted a lot of things, thanks Andrey!
April 21st, 2014 @ 6:56 am
Why didn't you release it as stand alone in the first place?
April 21st, 2014 @ 6:59 am
I've been trying to recreate those solar flares/sun/stars since the Star Trek Into Darkness behind the scenes video you dropped a while ago...looking forward to see if I was anywhere close to how you recreated especially using TurbulenceFD (since I dont have Krakatoa in 3DS Max) to recreate the flame sprite. Thanks for looking out for us Andrew and happy easter!
April 21st, 2014 @ 7:00 am
ohh my god ! it's like you are reading my mind !
April 21st, 2014 @ 7:38 am
Wow - that looks...ahm hot! The heatdistortion plugin would be a great addition to AE.
April 21st, 2014 @ 7:48 am
Really looking forward to this one...
April 21st, 2014 @ 7:53 am
Yes please.
April 21st, 2014 @ 8:29 am
Dude.... yes!! 1000% you should
April 21st, 2014 @ 8:42 am
I'm not a big fan of asking for freebies from this site BUT alas....I'd love it :0) I tried to make this effect a few years ago for another project and gave up as it just didn't look right lol

And Andrew....thanks for offering :0)
April 21st, 2014 @ 9:02 am
Hi VC And All Guys
I Hope You Are All Keeping Well
Thanks A Lot
April 21st, 2014 @ 9:23 am
Hey Whats up.
m Waiting for this tutorial and want to make amazing logo out of this...
April 21st, 2014 @ 9:45 am
Hey Andrew. You know how you're always encouraging experimentation and poking around? Here's a suggestion: Post a teaser like the one you just did and then ask, "How would you do this in AE?" Make it a mini contest to see who can get a similar result before a tutorial.
    Jason W
    April 21st, 2014 @ 9:51 pm
Pickle!! Finally! That's what I'm talking about! Let's be encouraged to use what we already know to push the envelope and not just step by step duplicate a tutorial and call it a demo reel. GREAT SUGGESTION.
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 1:18 am
    Yes! That would be cool.
April 21st, 2014 @ 9:58 am
I hear the Sun is a hot topic these days...

April 21st, 2014 @ 10:16 am
Yes! Let a new tutorial!
April 21st, 2014 @ 10:40 am
AK, I think that it's a great idea to offer the heat distortion plugin separately. Seems there are tons of applications apart from jet engine FX.
April 21st, 2014 @ 11:17 am
YES. The Heat Distortion plugin as a separate entity would be a benefit to everyone. I currently use either Monsters "Heat Waves" plugin or use Trapcode's MIR as a displacement map. While TP's Mir requires setup to get right, Monsters Heatwave is easy, but not very realistic. Having another option that is customizable and realistic is always a plus!
April 21st, 2014 @ 11:22 am
I can't wait to see how you pulled this awesome flaming ball/sun off without any third party plug ins, I bought the jet strike pack including the heat distortion plugin, it's awesome...
April 21st, 2014 @ 12:08 pm
Cannot wait to see this tutorial. I've been looking for something exactly like this recently, and have tried to experiment, but haven't come up with anything that looks how I would like it to. Also, I would definitely buy the heat distortion plug-in if it was made available separately.
April 21st, 2014 @ 12:20 pm
i found that using planes and the scatter in 3ds (for the coronas), that this can be made into a element model with probably a bit less time.
just need a few randomized smoke elements
April 21st, 2014 @ 1:30 pm
Fractal Noise > Dynamic (Inverted), CC Sphere, Polar Coordinates, Turbulent Displacement, Stylized Glow (multiple times). Am I close?
    Matt D
    April 21st, 2014 @ 7:22 pm
Hmm, don't know if this has been suggested before, but imagine if Mr. Andrew Kramer gave occasional challenges: Recreate the clip he shows us, and see who can figure out how it was done. This would be a perfect example.
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:27 pm
I already have the plug-in and the results have been great! Been working on a similar effect a "solar" type effect using the heat distortion plugin. Would love to see a tutorial how to get the most out of it similar to this solar video.
April 21st, 2014 @ 4:46 pm
After looking at the MotionPulse promo vid, I'm assuming (and we all know what that makes me) that you used similar techniques for that as well.
April 21st, 2014 @ 5:51 pm
YESSS! I would lovvve dem heat waves without the jets and missiles! :)
April 21st, 2014 @ 9:30 pm
hye andrew sir i have question ,,

Why Element 3d is fast render models insted of 3dds or c4d ?

what is diffrence in renderer ?
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 1:45 am
It uses the GPU, not the CPU, so it's more limited but it's fast.
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 2:06 am
    E3D uses no Raytracing.
It uses envirmental mapping not reflection.
    (I Suppose...)
    April 25th, 2014 @ 12:01 pm
    thanks JBT27 and Chris
April 21st, 2014 @ 10:28 pm
Count on me for a purchase of the "heat distortion" plug-in.
Very cool effect and can't wait for the tutorial!
April 21st, 2014 @ 11:25 pm
looking fantastic :-)
April 22nd, 2014 @ 12:20 am
Yes AK! The heat distortion plug-in sold separately is a great idea! Thanks!!
April 22nd, 2014 @ 12:39 am
Yes Please. Can't wait
April 22nd, 2014 @ 1:06 am
Had I not already blown $300 on the Entire Fight Kit Bundles and E3D 1.6, I would say "Heck Yeah", but to those people who don't have it, then I would still say Heck yeah !!!! VCP ROCKS !!!!
April 22nd, 2014 @ 1:32 am
This just reminded me of the hunger games fire ring, How dod they do that?
April 22nd, 2014 @ 7:28 am
Yes, count me in as another one interested in the heat distortion plug-in for individual sale.
April 22nd, 2014 @ 7:54 am
As a producer that does contract work for a variety of clients, I would recommend offering the plug-in as a stand alone. If a project arose where I needed to use the heat distortion plug-in but had to justify the purchase, it's easier to pitch a client on paying for a single plug-in versus an airplane model pack that has nothing to do with their particular project. Just my two cents.
April 22nd, 2014 @ 8:51 am
Great Idea to sale the plug !
April 22nd, 2014 @ 9:02 am
Please sell the plugin by itself. I would purchase it at this very moment if it was available!
Looking forward to the new tutorial! I have attempted some sun scenes but need to learn how to make it pop!
April 22nd, 2014 @ 9:51 am
How do you determine whether you are going to use Vimeo or YouTube? I'm not seeing anything but a random pattern. Just wondering.
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 9:54 am
Random... In this case, the video was very short and so I chose Vimeo as more of a test video.
Tóth-Horgosi Gergely
April 22nd, 2014 @ 10:46 am
I really like your work Andrew! You helped me a lot to understand what we can really do in After Effects and stuff like that. Full respect from Hungary! :D I hope you'll make a lot of tutorial for us. It's very useful!

Best wishes
Andre Whitmore
April 22nd, 2014 @ 12:31 pm
That would be awesome! can you do a tutorial on actually creating our own plugin i have a lot of ideas but can't do that part.
just a thought.
April 22nd, 2014 @ 1:29 pm
Really the heat distortion justifies its purchase. It's a great plugin!
April 22nd, 2014 @ 1:44 pm
Hi Andrew the plugin separate is nice but for people that purchase the jet bundle I will like to suggest that pls Add astroid planet and other organic cg from star trek and everyone is happy thanks for your work God will continue to bless VC team
Jackson Welch
April 22nd, 2014 @ 2:30 pm
I can't wait for this tutorial! Upload it soon!!! PLEASE! Your killing me!
April 22nd, 2014 @ 2:41 pm
I'll give you $25 for the plugin right now.
April 22nd, 2014 @ 3:53 pm
"I was thinking about finally making this plug-in available for sale individually instead of inside the bundle, anyone else interested in that idea?"

YES! I use Terragen a lot, and do a lot of environment work in general. The plugin would be useful to me on its own. I can think of a number of desert scenes that I have, that I would like to easily add heat waves to.

By the way, that sun is very nice! I would put that tut to use very quickly.
    April 22nd, 2014 @ 4:59 pm
For the OP tut. It would be GREAT, if you also talked about how to apply the effect to a plane or otherwise flat(ish) surface in addition to the spherical form.

April 22nd, 2014 @ 5:00 pm
Looks like the blue planet from Star Trek Into The Darkness.. Was wondering how you did those effects. Should be a cool Tut Thanks AK
April 22nd, 2014 @ 5:15 pm
Yes on the Plugin....Bring on the tutorial!!!!!
Robert Johnson
April 22nd, 2014 @ 6:37 pm
Andrew I can't wait for this tutorial! Every time I hear a new one is on its way, I get super excited and time goes extremely slow! Could you tell us when it will be up this week?
April 23rd, 2014 @ 2:31 am
Oh my soul I can't wait for this tutorial!!! I am busy with a production where I need to do something very similar to this... Hope its in time for me to meet the deadline. :)
April 23rd, 2014 @ 7:51 am
Totally unrelated and off topic....

Hey Andrew, check out this awesome use of Element3D in a recent viral video, I have no affiliation nor gain no profit or will links to my youtube page will be listed, this is just pure pluggin the plug-in:

Nice work and funny stuff, too! Thank you, sir, for creating Element3D, you are giant among us average men.
April 23rd, 2014 @ 7:58 am
Awesome as always.
So Same way to make you stare track in to darkness Title sequence?
April 23rd, 2014 @ 9:22 am
This looks more like the fx in your Star Trek title sequence! Can't wait!
April 23rd, 2014 @ 11:21 am
Hey Andrew!

Yep that sounds like a fair deal. Out of curiosity, are you planning on making a Baked animation 3D Action Essentials pack using E3D anytime soon? Cause I would love that.
April 23rd, 2014 @ 8:45 pm
We are very interested in that idea. But please keep it at a low price.

Hey guys, any news about ELEMENT V2? Any chance we have an better integration with MODO and AE?
April 30th, 2014 @ 7:45 pm
Was wonderin i've tried a few methods to get the start to tear itself apart several settings in shatter and other various methods.. Cant quite seem to get it right how would i go about creating a supernova in the star itself? So far I've managed to make the surface layer of the star blow up into a plasma form i just wanna know how to get the start to tear itself apart in a x/z direction?
May 20th, 2014 @ 7:51 am
