Futuristic City Pack?

I had this Crazy Idea last night… A Futuristic City Pack created by the collective, err I mean community for the community, that would be 100% FREE!

I know your time is precious but if we could each spare a little bit of time to make one futuristic skyscraper or tower, we could have enough buildings to create amazing sci-fi worlds!

I’ll even create a few buildings myself so there can be a little Kramer in the skyline of the future! For my kids of course. Plus I’ve never created a futuristic building and it kinda seems like a fun challenge.

We can’t do it without you!
If you have some 3D modelling skills and some free time over the next few weeks , we’d love for you to be part of this! The future is in your hands.

Our team will through the submissions and get the files organized and structured into an easy to use download that is 100% Free!

Get inspired with a Google search for futuristic cities but remember to make your buildings original and unique! The sky’s the limit!

3D Specifications:

  • Medium to High resolution models
  • Maximum polygon count of 100K (Metropolitan buildings are around 20K Polys)
  • 3D Max, Cinema 4D, Maya, Blender, OBJ (quads)
  • Square texture maps 1k, 2k or up to 4k
  • Diffuse Map, Specular
  • Optional Maps:  Illumination (The future is bright!)
  • JPG, PNG textures maps

    Hi, I\'d love to be part of the party, but if I can model obj\'s pretty easily with a small software, I\'m having a hard time to find a standalone UV unwrapping program in order to export a flat mesh in Photoshop, since I don\'t have 3ds max... I would just like to find a program where you load the obj file and export the unwrap in a png or tiff. I found roadkill, but I just don\'t get how it works, cause there is not command like \"export as...\" Someone has an idea??

    Hi there, I'd love to be part of the party but if I can model buildings easily, my problem is how to unwrap the model in order to put it in Photoshop? I know several programs but I'm having a hard time using them. For example, I tried Roadkill but there's just no "export as" command! Am I missing something? I just would like a freeware that allows me to load a obj file and get a png or tiff with the mesh flattened. How can I do that?

    I highly doubt Mr. Kramer is planning to use the above art on the cover of this new product and placing this above image in his blog is no different from you or I writing a blog article about how Apple's headphones don't fit a normal person's ear and displaying the Apple logo at the top of the article. Go read up on the EFF about intellectual rights and fair use before you try and cite something improperly.

    Why in the world would anyone need to have a copyright over already copyrighted material? If the screenshot is from a game that is sold to many (don't know how many) and thus is part of many pages on the web, why single out someone for sharing his novel idea/s?
    Such thoughts are nothing but an example of taking things too far. And may be the beginning of the end for something/s vicious, anti community, against freedom of expressions.

iam allready experimenting with metropolitan and apply grungy textures to make it look old! but it would be great to have buildings with big holes and missing parts and rubble! :) respect Andrew, nice how you integrate the community! to be part of videocopilot is a big thing!

Andrew, many of us want to take part but do not have skills in 3d program.Sugestion: You can make one short tutorial and show us mortals how to make one building in for example, 3d max.Looking at your tutorial we might be able to be creative.

Considering I'm teaching myself Cinema 4D this seems like the perfect project to contribute to. I'll gladly participate, but can't promise that my contribution will be as a great as the experienced and skilled guys/gals out there who'll also be contributing. Got to love futuristic sci-fi movies.

I'm actually working on putting together a futuristic city for an indie film right now. Over the next couple weeks I'll be modeling some buildings in Cinema 4D for that, so maybe I'll model a few extra ones to contribute to this. I can't put in the ones for the film because they are supposed to be unique to the movie.

I like this. Get the community to work together to make a freebie pack. Starting Blender next week so I can do some 3D logo animations for clients so I doubt I will be anywhere near ready to make a building or have time, but what the hell, it's a challenge, and it's accepted.

Andrew, I did spend a bit of time on photoshop dirtying up some of the metropolis artwork to make the buildings look old and 'ruined'. I don't know what the deal would be with sharing these with the community?

What about the scaling? It would be nice of you to release any sort of reference model you would like to be similar to these buildings in scale, otherwise you might have to spend good amount of time in scaling objects afterwards.

    It can be multiples meshes and multiple materials but you should use as few as necessary and combine meshes where possible. Optimize!

    I think the two of you need a little perspective. Here's a man who has, for free, imparted the kind of knowledge and expertise that you would normally have to pay through the nose for. yes he's marketed his products to make money but thats NEVER been a requirement of what he does.

    So he decides to ask us to help him create a 3D pack for element, big deal, because guess what... he's not even making any money out of it, its for the community by the community. If your not happy with this then simply don't take part, and unless your a massive hypocrite (which i assume you are) don't download the pack.

    The solution, be better at it than everyone else... Andrew Kramer is an amazing pioneer, who because he is epically skilled and has a since of altruism has become a teacher to so many of us. Provide free advise and projects for years, and in doing so has made a name in marketing himself that money cannot buy. Not because he works for free... but because he's the best... pay attention.

    And Andrew, thank you for making me skilled enough to be gainfully employed... :-)

    Oh yeah. Iam a hypocrite. I wrote a comment after that, but VC not published. And in his comment I said that I thought its more fair give some pack for the best designers of this challenge. I dont agree with work for free. Its not good for the future designers. I saw this for other perspective. Everything we do in our work must have some kind of reward. Its wonderful be creative and do stuffs for the pleasure, but our business is in its worst days. And Im 100% sure that a lot of guys will use this pack for make money without give credits for all responsibles for the final result.

    That will make it more realistic. Look at any modern city and you will see that there are so many styles and inspirations. The reason most future cities fail is because they have a single/small team that is responsible for comming up with the entire layout. In reality not every building is built at the same time using the same materials or style.

Would be good if Andrew could create one first, and make it available as a kind of template when it comes to look, scale, complexity, style etc. Otherwise, you're just going to have a patchwork city where a lot of the buildings won't work with other buildings.

"Right, that's my Blade Runner looking street sorted, now lets just add that police station model to finish it off. Hmm, wait a minute. This police station looks like it should be in Logan's Run!"

I appreciate this is a beggars can't be choosers kind of situation, but it would be nice if there was a better picture of the final goal. Even the attached post image would be a start, looks pretty good! Or at least a choice between utopia/dystopia/somewhere in-between.

If there's a certain level of consistency involved in the models and Andrew slaps a DVD cover on it then I'd gladly buy it! All the designers can have shares in the sales... power to the people.

    Your exactly right LordEdington, However, modern architectural style today is a mixture of other styles. The modern style of choice should not be decided now. Instead, people should be allowed to send in their submissions without guidelines. The reason for this is because you will get some very unique designs that will create your new future style. Attempting to determine it now would only limit the uniqueness and resulting value of the project. Over time, the submissions themselves will morph into a dominating style as VC gives guidelines as to what they need next from the community. As well, VC can now just fill in the blanks with transitional style buildings that brings together the whole.
    In short, it should not be decided now and I trust that VC will do what they need to do to make the volume of the work come together in a unified manner.
    I want to be a part of this and I am going to dedicate some time each night to creating a building.
    As well, I suggest that people make any kind of building that they want such as an Industrial complex, store front, modern office, apartment building, etc. as this pack could eventually have sections of a city which is actually much more valuable than just the downtown office part of a city.
    Also keeping people free enables someone to create that city icon that truly defines the city. All notable cities have one, like the statue of liberty, world trade center, arch, spike, sears tower, etc. By allowing anything, you can get everything that you need.

    Ok, Ill explain it another way. Giving people a style guideline is what will ruin the look of the city. As explained by someone else here, if everyone designs according to organic or angular or thin and tall style guidelines then the pack will be rather useless as a pack designed to meet many goals. You should not constrain people to a certain style because you are afraid that it will not come together. In fact, it is the opposite that is true. Andrew and VC can take the best of whatever the community can put together and create the in between building styles that will help to bring together the whole. For instance, if someone builds a great organic tall building with zero angular lines and another guy creates a building with nothing but angular design, then VC can build a building that uses both styles together to merge the two styles to create a more unified whole. This is what will create a more usable and flexible future city pack than if everyone is told to design according to a single style. The Hodgepodge city will look as if it has history whereas your unified city design will look as if the entire city was created by a single architect in a single day. So, I understand your concern about a unified look, but I trust that Andrew and VC can take whatever the community gives them and then unify it and in the end it will look much better and be more useful than if you say, Design only organic tall buildings with no sharp angles or some other complete design constraint.

Hi everyone,
Metropolitan is great and a future city would be fabulous...But, most "major" cities have a big river running through them. I don't know how or, indeed, if, a "3D River" can be created? Imagine a Flowing 3D river in the scene, with all of the other additional possibilities...bridges, boats, planes, choppers, subs etc.

Is this possible?

Love the idea, a little worried like the one user mentioned about quality throughout but I have faith! In terms of maps, do you mind if we throw in a normal map as well? Andrew, you never cease to amaze me. Whenever I need anything for film, I come to Video Copilot and find it. Just yesterday my Friends and I were talking about making a film where many people's dreams are connected through a very unique landmark, but we didn't know what we would use for the landmark. One day later, you come out with this haha. I have never come on here and not found what I need. Thanks for everything Andrew :)

it would be insane if i or someone else could model a modern/futuristic building, hollow it out by floor, fracture it, then add rebar and other bits to the top of each fracture so the building could be custom destroyed in element. also, fracture the glass separately so it could be destroyed by the shock of an explosion before the rest gets hit or to have most of the glass broken out in a post-apocalyptic world. that or adding a fracture update to element would be awesome. also collision and gravity/wind if its possible. one last request of mine is to have element recognize other layers in z space so parts of it could be seen in front of a layer but others would be hidden behind it. i tried making a clip where object flew around a masked out actor but had to use some work arounds to make it look like they flew behind him and in front of him
if only i was better at 3d modeling. ill still give it a try though.

What a great idea. I think it's fair to say that most of us are in love with After Effects and video in general. 3D modeling isn't in my wheelhouse. With Element 3D, I was hoping to keep it that way. I'd like to contribute, but with all due respect, I'm not learning a 3D modeling program to make a building that surely won't be used. Is there other things that I could work on? Perhaps you could delegate sub-categories: textures, skylines, materials, streets, billboards, etc. Everyone has different strengths. With a community, seems like you could dig deep. After all, they don't make JJ pilot the Enterprise.

Take a look at the entries for this recent skyscraper competition. I think these buildings are actually more futuristic than most current artwork. Remember these are practical as well as aesthetic designs that range from geodesic trees to citadels. It has certainly inspired me.

Some suggestions from a non 3d builder, because its not all futuristic buildings to make the illusion complete:

- What about rusty and old buildings (covered in plants). To keep it realistic, because every modern (european) city has old buildings between the modern ones. (like the Louvre in Paris: https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSOCQkCC9HoZStPw8Q5WUUUPyB0yd6mIsaLgCnlFe5t6WLohAcg)

- What about futuristic roads/transport across the city, like hovering metro's?

- Park's with a futuristic twist, because the future is going to be greener...

- Large advertising/video screens, because every city is going to have a little time square thing going on in the future...

- And maybe some future (flying) vehicles, to make it all complete...

I thank all 3d artists in advance, because this kind of crowdsourcing should happen more often!

it would makes sense if you might post a tutorial yourself on creating a building using 3d Max, or Cinema 4d etc so that we could follow the required workflow including the correct method needed for adding materials and breaking up the pieces for use in Element?

I use Maya on a daily basis so any information needed for that app would be useful too?

Although most of us think of the future as buildings we would barely recognize, perhaps future buildings will show some "retro look" to them. So, the future skyline might have a retro look of buildings that we're all familiar with.

I think this is a fantastic idea!! I don't have any 3D modeling skills, but I would definitely download this when it becomes available. While we are on the subject of futuristic cities, I think it would be cool to see something that falls under the fantasy/mid-evil range as well. Gothic castles and cathedrals, straw and wooden huts, etc.

At first I thought it was a great idea, but the more I think about it, the more I think it's not the greatest idea as someone mentioned. Although I would like to help Andrew out for his many great tutorials, the fact is, some company will use our models and what do we get really? Our names on a videocopilot page? Andrew's gratitude is nice, but let's be honest. This pack will serve to draw more potential customers to the site. Sometimes just being a part of a cool project isn't enough. Why pay a person to model something when you can get it for free? We are just hurting designers out there who want to make a living. There's a reason Video Copilot doesn't have free big model packs like this. They want to get paid.

    I really don't care if my model is used by someone else. I think Andrew doesn't care if we use his knowledge and skills for our own ends - which is why we have his great tutorials. I'm hoping to be part of this just so I can say I was part of it. It's a chance to work on something that Andrew Kramer is a part of. I think that's pretty cool. And, as a matter of fact, I hope ideas like this DO drive traffic to Video Copilot. Andrew and his team deserve it. If you don't want to help, you don't have to. And even if you don't I bet Andrew will still let you download the free pack (and I bet you will download it too!). Peace.

As an example, I work to create 3D models for a guy in London. If he were to ask for a futuristic city, how can I charge him when there are free models available. Now, let's say Andrew asked the Video Copilot community for help with a pack that he would sell and make all the profit for himself and his team, then I would say, sure. It is a small price to pay for his help. But, if some company in Japan is going to make money from it then, no thanks.Peace

    Well LD,

    The 'problem' you are affraid of is actually the most common one in question and demand...COMPETITION! The more competitors, the more the variaty in pricing.
    The price shouldn't determine who gets the work, or who has right to offer their work, it's the skill and the creativity to distinguish an artist.
    Like every brand you need to keep distinguishing yourself to stay ahead of competition.. Making your work worth the extra dollar.

    As for VC's influence you describe and making money you need to look closely to all software developers in this brand. VC offers high quality vfx software for prices round $50 going up to $150. Compare their prices and come again on VC making big money on plugins and community-gathered free models.
    Don't forget that many VC members could make a living in the VFX industry thanks to VC and their competitive pricing. I am one of them.
    Let them make some money so we all can keep learning from VC and they can continue their software development in this outrageous expensive industry.

I'm super dopey excited about this! Here's my contribution. You maybe asking how this building is funtional. Well my idea was that there is no need for a foundation because it hovers above ground. There's also no need for doors since you can just magically walk into the building. And there's also no need for windows because once inside the walls become transparent - how cool is that!

This is strange...I was just thinking about asking you to make a Metropolitan add-on with Futuristic Buildings (purchaseable) - likethey have in Star Trek Into Darkness for ex, and now you come up with this brilliant idea Andrew! This is an amazing initiative. I've just recently started with 3D modeling, and I can't really claim to be that good yet. This will make independent sci-fi's with great establishing shots possible, among other things. I'm really stoked for this, and might even try to put something together myself, if only just for the practice. :)

Well I tried. I almost made one but there is no one to help me out find what's not looking good, what to remake/fix or even if it is good enough.
The idea is taken by an image I saw in google. Not copyrighted but it's hard for me to create something without concept art.

I will absolutely make time to work on one building for the collection.

But just one question for now... Is someone going to quality control this????? The buildings need to all be at the same scale. For example, a flight of stares cant have 5 feet high steps on one building and 1 foot on another, relative to the size of a door way, for example.

Who will do this hard work of making everything real world scale?!!!?!?! Quality control Andrew.. Please share your plan!

I am a good modeler. But slow. I will only have time to make one building. Hope thats ok.

This idea is awesome!!! Especially for me, I don't have the time or money to invest in 3D programs and/or learn and create 3D models, so this idea appeals to me. Personally I would like to see this expanded to any type of model. An extension to this site for people to share their talents. I'm an amateur photographer and AE user. A place for any type of artist to share work that can be used in AE would be awesome. Just think of the possibilities.... backdrops, textures, 3D models, vector art, fonts, video!!! A Video Copilot Collective website. hmmmm we may have something here.

VC Team,
I am unclear as to the use of these futuristic models. Do I understand correctly that these future models could then be used by the Metropolitan E3D engine, sort of expanding the existing display of buildings and skyscrapers? We would simply select a few of them and Metro's engine would then assemble them, using all the built-in features of Metro? If that is the plan, that would be terrific. Thanks for your assistance.

    Metro doesn't have any built in features, it's just a model pack. All the features shown in the Metro demo are functions of Element and can be swapped out for any other models.

hey Andrew, awesome idea, but... do you feel like giving us some cinema 4d (preferably) / or 3ds max modelling and texturing tutorials as maybe a bit of a jump point. Especially with cc coming out a lot of us will have cine4d to play with :)
I know that makes more work for your already crazy schedule... but it might save you some work in the log term... just a thought to get us all on the road :)
I vaguely remember you having a basic cine4d tut back there. Was it the crane shot one?

OK, I am going to model at real world scale because I always do with hard surfaces.

Im almost finished with my first building and I got an idea for my next one. So I will send in two!

For those people who have some problems getting their building look good.
Create a normal map of your texture using a plugin for photoshop. its developed by nvidia and completely free!
A good normal map makes your model look so much better! +you don't need as much polys because you can store details in the normal map :)

Create a reflectivity map for your windows. It increases the look of your building aswell!

am asking if you can make the metropolitan plugin, or element 3d contain roads, and local houses apart from the sky scrapers, like also making it have african houses, beacuse i find it hard to use metropolitan for my projects here in east Africa since we don't have such buildings,
is there a way you can integrate plants like grass , trees into those plugins, or create a plugin of such, because it makes rendering easy in after effects than in 3ds max or other 3d aplications. thanks

I can do this all day, but I need to know one thing that I have never been able to figure out. In 3ds max 2013 OBJ files always generate an .mtl file for the textures. I have not been able to find a proficient tutorial on how to generate
1. Square texture maps 1k, 2k or up to 4k
2. Diffuse Map, Specular
3. Optional Maps: Illumination (The future is bright!)
4. JPG, PNG textures maps
Such as we see in the metro pack. If I knew how to do that the sky would be the limit here. Can anyone direct me to how to generate these kinds of maps. Can it be done from an .mtl or is there a function in max export to do this?

    Thanks dHoward, I appreciate the effort. but no that is not what I need, I know how to texture a model in 3ds max, what I need is how to export it so that the materials save as jpegs and pngs for use in element 3d. As of now when I export a textured obj from max, it generates only an .mtl file which cannot be used in element 3d. see what I mean? Given I have a textured model in max, the question is how to export that so that all of the textures are saved as jpegs and pngs instead of a .mtl file?

    Hey guys, Turbosquid is a great source for models, The great ones can be pricy, but you can get most of it for free. Also there is http://www.thepixellab.net/products which are all set and ready for use in element!

Even though I haven't gotten Element 3D yet I thought this collaboration was pretty cool so I created 2 models to submit. I couldn't spend as much time as I wanted on them but I think they're ok.

    How about the fact that they're contributing some of their own buildings, compiling all the models and textures together, probably making some prebuilt grids with streets like in the Element pack, and releasing it both as an Element pack and standalone 3D models...for free?

    there are some many comments that have good point and argument, but I've been follow video copilot since their beginning, Andrew and his team has always give away free tutorials and share his knowledge with the community for free, as well as marketing his product and what I see is that there are room for everything. Some people will get free stuff, some people will pay for it, other will be splitting between both. I think share to the community is great idea. My respect for Video Copilot team!

Ok everybody I just had to comment on this one. I think this is A excellent idea all of you 3D artist will get the Opportunity to Show your work right here on VIDEO COPILOT! And you get Credit for it! I'm not A 3D artist at this moment I wish that I knew something about it because that sounds like Opportunity Knocking! I don't know how many models will be chosen for the pack or how but I believe we are going to see some Quality and Unique work.And correct me if im wrong but it looks like no limit on how many submissions any one person can make.I Envy all of you with mad Modelling Skills I can't wait to see what you create!!! It would be nice doing a pack with ruined buildings, with plants everywhere, as if the man were estinct or almost, something like "The Last Of Us" game for PS3 or "I'm a Legend".

    I like what you did, that's a good starting point! I think you should now add more detail, like stairs, steel structural elements, cables, openings, panels, etc. Try attaching your concept to something: cultural style, who built that building, with what technology etc. Try to tell yourself a story when you model. Even if you're the only one to know it, it will make it naturally more believable for the viewer. Keep up the good job!

Hi there, I'd love to be part of the party but if I can model buildings easily, my problem is how to unwrap the model in order to put it in Photoshop? I know several programs but I'm having a hard time using them. For example, I tried Roadkill but there's just no "export as" command! Am I missing something? I just would like a freeware that allows me to load a obj file and get a png or tiff with the mesh flattened. How can I do that?

    If you're using 3DSMAX, use the unwrap uvw modifier. Select faces you wish to map and use the tools in the modifier to unwrap them. Flatiron is a plugin you could also try, it does the unwrapping automatically. After, save this template out as a BMP or whichever you prefer, and start painting in Photoshop with immediate feedback on the applied texture, in the Max viewport (after every PS save), Hope that helps a little.

My problem is that I don't have 3DS max... I dont have the money to buy it and I prefer from far to stay away from "downloadZ", if you know what I mean. In other words, I'm screwed... Any idea? Or if some good soul would unwrap my model for me? It's really really annoying to have ideas more than brain space available, some skills in modelling at least enough to have a sh**load of fun, concrete-strong skills in Photoshop, an incredible opportunity to take part to the community project of Andrew and just being stupidly handcuffed by a HUGE technical ignorance in uv unwrapping... That pi**** the f€&@ out of me. Not later than tonight I tried miserably to use Blender for the first time. COMPLETE FAIL. i just don't get the logic of it. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. Thanks.

    Ok. I could do an 'auto unwrap' for you. To do this manually in 3D Max is very time consuming (dependent on model detail and if it is organic or more hard surface). So an auto unwrap I could do in Flatiron. Would need some way to get the model from you though...in OBJ format preferably . Do you have a temp email you are ok to post here? And I'll contact you. I don't have much time myself to do this project, have many other commitments...but I'd be glad to help you if I can.
