Animated Aperture in Element 3D!

Here is the animation I created last night using extruded masks inside Element 3D to build some kind of angry aperture. I animated the various group values to ‘reveal’ parts of the object. I usually do the sound design last so when animating it helps to have a lot of movement to motivate the sound FX. You want stuff to look good and sound good!

Watch on Youtube in HD

I used the materials from the Pro Shaders with some minor tweaks.

Nice job, Andrew.

A few time ago I was thinking about doing something similar to the "alien mechanical spheres" from Battleship in Element 3D (now withe the included glow for textures could be easier). I hope to have some time to spend in something like this in the near future. Congrats!

Wow, how did you create that AWESOME sound? What sound mixing software do you use? Pro tool, or some advanced Star Trek/Alian/Space software? Where do you get your sound FX from, are you thinking about creating a new Sound FX pack? :)

My opinion is that sound are more than 50% of the whole film :)

Amazing work again, Andrew. Just wondering if there's any chance of a CS5 project file? I've been doing lots of work on Element and using masks to extrude and I'm really intrigued to see how you've animated things more than the actual extrusion itself. I always get to where I want my project to be but I can't help but think it's probably not the most time efficient way of doing it :)

While I'm here I just wanted to say how impressive Element 3D and all your products, tutorials are. I started as an amateur a few months ago and my skills have come a long way thanks to Videocopilot.

Your comment is awaiting moderation.

Andrew I wanted to ask you, is it possible to make a second ambient occlusion in E3D so we can have one SSAO with more radios and one SSAO with a little amount of radios, for more realistic results?
Also, if you can make screen space ambient occlusion in E3D why can’t you make Screen Space Reflections? And in the next version of E3D and optical flares can you make a connection between these two so the models with illumination maps can be flared up with OF?
Thanks. For all your hard work, I checkout video copilot EVERY day to see if something new came out! Like the glass tut. :D
Sorry I commented this on two places, I really want an answer.

Awesome. What were the render times like? Are you using your 580 or the Titan? It's nice to see you pushing your own software in ways you didn't necessarily design it to be pushed. As I'm sure you've noticed, with future updates you can really make Element a tool in it's own category (it already is, but you get my drift.)

As a NUKE artist, it would be interesting to see what could be done if this were ported over in the same way Optical Flares was. It would really get my creative juices flowing :) OpenGL and NUKE work quite well together already.

Cheers, Andrew & Team!
    May 28th, 2013 @ 9:48 pm
I'm using the 680 here at home. Render Times are very fast! I made about 15 shots that are about 3-7 seconds. Each shot is about 1-3 minutes to render with DOF and Motion blur. I made the entire sequence in about 6 hours. Modelling, animation, camera and lighting. Once I had the look down, I would duplicate the comps and animate the camera and lighting.

Hey Andrew do you find any instability when linking files straight from the element "texture editor window" as opposed to importing the image into your project and then comp, and then putting it as one of the texture layers in the effects window? I have recently been experiencing texture link problems in a project that has about 30 element comps, each with it's own 5 different texture maps. Element seems to find only one group of textures and applys it to everything, even elements in different comps. Thoughts?

Currently I am running 2x 580 Classifieds no-SLI, this set up is for Davinci. I also have a 660Ti for my GUI. My question is two fold,

1) What are the chances that you could make GPU a selected preference. AE only seems to uses the card that my monitor is plugged in, this is usually the 660ti it would be great to use another GPU for rendering ect(maybe you could even convince your friends at adobe to include this in AE CC ;)

2)If question 1 is possible, then i would ask if in an upcoming release you would consider the use of multiple GPUs in the same way Davinci does. Currently I can run Epic footage with 5+ nodes realtime(24). On output I can get upwards of 35-50 FPS to DNXHD220-no rocket. I can only imagine what a second or third Gpu would allow us to do in E3D

It's always the same for me. Andrew posts. I get enthusiastic. Short-of-breath, I check it out. I feel awe - delight - wonder. I clap my hands because every at-bat for Andrew is an out-of-the-park homer. Then I replay. And replay, and gawk, and wonder some more. Then I get depressed. Yeah, depressed. Because the best I have to offer are foul balls and easy outs. The most I can hope for is to be walked. So I sit depressed for a while. Then I hear a little voice inside - it sounds like an Andrew Kramer whisper saying "Swing Away!" it echoes off to nothing and then repeats, "Swing Away!" and repeats until at last I am encouraged and finally I click the AE Icon and try again. It's always the same. Now that I got that out of my system, I'm hearing an encouraging whisper, and I'm off to swing away! Thanks Andrew!

Hi Everyone,

So i'm looking for some in depth info...

I know how to create these animations as i am frequent user of E3D.

However I am having troubles with finding the right adjustments, or filters, to get that professional film look. And i don't mean the Curves adj.

Can someone give me some directions on which settings are used when finishing a comp and add the correct filters to get that specific look like in this movie above.

Much appreciated my fellow AE junkies.

Hi @All
Here is a promo video clip which I've created for a soundtrack called "Nice Life". The animation is entirely done in Adobe After Effects CS6 using the powerful VC Element 3D plugin. Having the possibility to use "Animated PreComps" as your own custom texture layers comes very handy in this case and makes thing easier to do .. Feel free to comment .. Enjoy!

At the first look I thought; 'is this all done with E3D???? What the....' Then I looked at the reference and it said you used way more than just E3D...

    Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Anyway, this animation is well done and very pro. Good work.

hey, whatsss. where i can found sound fx like in this video??
    June 18th, 2013 @ 12:55 pm
You can make by your own if you put some time on sound design, Cause most of those sound come from His Sound packs :) He add various elements. Agree. But playing with all you can do it by your own. There are lot of sound's plugin in Sound Edting sofware :] You can tweak those out with one single Clip ; you can create various type of sound. Then edit those by layers.
Because he Might usually doing it by himself. It takes time :)
