Element 3D Extended Family!

UPDATE: Now Available

We were going to wait and surprise everyone with this news but I see a lot of people wondering where they can find quality 3D models and the answer is now at Video Copilot!

If you have ever purchased a 3D model you know they are pretty expensive, usually ranging from $40-$100 for a SINGLE high quality model so we thought we could save you some time and maybe some money with our very own professionally designed 3D models! All objects are compatible with Element 3D plus your favorite 3D program as well. We’ve included two universal formats (OBJ & FBX) to be ready for your creative works in Element or your favorite dedicated 3D program! (Cinema 4D, 3D Max, Maya, Blender and more)

We have been working with some talented 3D artists to bring these packs to life and they have done an amazing job! So I’d like to thank Stefan, Alexander, Theo and Bobby, I’m sure they are glad the notes are over (“Let’s make that a little more grungy, That one Less shiny, This should be 50% more delicious”.

We have also put these models through some serious quality control to make sure every model meets a high standard. We didn’t just export the 3D files to OBJ & FBX, we opened each one in many popular 3D programs to make sure the polygons loaded correctly.

See Official Poster

They will be available with Element 3D this Tuesday including some new bundles. I think we all need a vacation after this!

Stay tuned for another Element 3D tutorial featuring the “Animation Engine”! And to keep expectations under control, it does NOT do physics since simulations since you lose control of Objects but it is quite powerful nonetheless. I will tell you the animation system is what spawned this entire plug-in almost 2 years ago…

If you haven’t seen the Element 3D preview, here it is again:

    July 9th, 2012 @ 1:31 am

They don’t read minds, they are clever, if you make a 3d plugin for a 2d program, you better make some 3D stuff to get you started :) plus more income. And so they can get more updates for the plugin etc.

    Hello!!
I would like to ask if this plugin can be upplied in text. Imagine to be able to apply these fantastic textures not only to arrows or other basic shapes but to text too…

July 8th, 2012 @ 2:11 am

Sweet! How many models per disk?

    July 8th, 2012 @ 2:16 am

About 35 to 50 models per pack and this does not count similar variations like Apple and Apple slice, these would be considered 1. Including variations, some packs have 50-85 models. The Motion Design Pack has over 200 models, of course this pack is primarily abstract objects that are not fully textured like the rest of real physical objects.

Xander
July 8th, 2012 @ 2:12 am

Wowowow
Andrew what pack does helicopter belong? Cnt wait till tuesday

July 8th, 2012 @ 2:13 am

man, you brought a revolutionary change in AE by this plug-in. luv it

July 8th, 2012 @ 2:13 am

Thats awesome Andrew. big congrats to all of you. just one question. I see that there is over 500 models all together. Does that mean there are about 100 models per pack or do some have less and more?

    July 8th, 2012 @ 2:17 am

Not quite, look up a few posts to see how many. The Motion Design pack has over 200 models which helps us make sensationalist claims!!

July 8th, 2012 @ 2:20 am

Andrew, you’re the coolest man alive!

July 8th, 2012 @ 2:22 am

Amazing !

1. How do I customize the models – Which software is best for this job ?
2. Is it possible to integrate Element 3D with Trapcode FORM or Particular.
3. Can I do Material Mapping for the EXTRUDED TEXT like in Zaxwerks

THANKS ALOT !

    Bob
    July 9th, 2012 @ 5:22 am

You can customize the models in any 3d program and he has objs to use with particular and form.

Just wondering with elements can you recreate the bullet slow motion scene that you did years ago? (the bullet flys through the scene as the camera follows it) ??

    July 8th, 2012 @ 2:46 am

YES and much easier! In fact the Projectile Weapons pack is designed for things like this. It includes missiles, grenades, bullets, shell casings and other fun Projectile objects. One of my favorite packs as you might imagine.

    Tater-tot
    July 8th, 2012 @ 1:00 pm

Zachary O’Connor
July 8th, 2012 @ 2:45 am

Will there be both DVD and downloadable releases? Or just one?

    July 8th, 2012 @ 2:49 am

All 3D products will be downloadable to customers on Tuesday! No waiting. We have upgraded to Amazon cloud hosting to make it as fast as possible. Plus our new download system we launched with the new site also makes it very easy to keep track of purchases and download what you need.

July 8th, 2012 @ 2:45 am

So since it seems transparency has been subjugated to only force-opacity, does that mean things like fresnel are out too?
I’m sure we’ll find workaround. I’m already planning on remaking the bullet-stopping scene from the Matrix Reloaded. Seems like I should be able to make that pretty quickly with that above pack!

    July 8th, 2012 @ 2:47 am

Give me an example of what you mean? Cause you can fresnel the reflection and refraction map and then lower the opacity of the surface…

    July 8th, 2012 @ 3:47 am

Hmm, well alright, I guess that makes sense. I guess I was more so thinking of magnification rather than fresnel. Like with extruded text and Raytracing, you can magnify whats behind the text. I understand Element is not a “raytracer” so to speak, but I’m curious if there is a magnification slider that can be used in conjunction with opacity and fresnel.

    Dan
    July 8th, 2012 @ 9:11 am

I think he means having a semi transparent object distorting the environment behind it.

    PureMotion
    July 8th, 2012 @ 9:41 am

I guess you guys are referring to refraction?

    Craig paup
    July 8th, 2012 @ 10:14 am

Refraction is based of a given ‘index’…
as well as the number of traced elements, the thickness (or depth) of the volume, and their angle to the camera.

To achieve that, each ray needs to be “traced” to give the proper results.

It’s not a “move a slider and it magically happens” operation.

Hi Andrew!

I can’t wait to try this out!
I work for tv and we sometimes need to model a dvd for a movie tv spot. Then replace the cover texture.
Can you tell me if there is a dvd/blu-ray 3D model? Would it be editable? That would be awesome.

I’m sure more packs will be added over time. Andrew has to start somewhere with this game changing application.

Within a few months of Elements being released, lets play a game of “Spot the Videocopilot Elements 3D effects” in new US TV series and Hollywood movies.

This will prove this is going to be a game changer.

Great work, as usual. You may take a vacation now ( but make it short…..)

Hi Andrew,

What sort of time on Tuesday will the downloads be accessible? I’m in the UK, so I don’t want to be waiting around all day and night to get my geek on only to find out you’re releasing it at midnight your time.

Give us a heads up man, otherwise, so help me AK…don’t make me come over there!

JUST TAKE MY MONEY!

Seriously , I don’t understand if it will be possible to animate a specific part of my custom 3d object , for example I have my helicopter 3d model (but multiparted in 3ds max) and I want to animate the propellers , do I need to do this in 3ds and Import the animation in element or I can do that directly in Element? (and use my helicopter as a particle)

Gemma
July 8th, 2012 @ 5:50 am

With element say if i had a human/animal model i wanted to use what would be the best way to animate it within after effects. Maybe you could make a mocap AE plugin when you’ve recovered from element :)

July 8th, 2012 @ 5:55 am

Great job Video Copilot! I’m sure that you guys are really proud of all your hard work, and we are too! I’m really excited about seeing more of what this plugin can do. I’m sure it can do some really amazing stuff… especially with all of these new 3D model packs. Thank you guys so much for what you do, you have impacted the visual effects industry in unimaginable ways, and you have definitely made your mark in history.

Andrew, as I said to you in one of the emails that I sent you, I can not understand what you say in the video (I use a translator). This 3D environment comes in the package to install?

Thank you …

July 8th, 2012 @ 6:24 am

I just wanted to say that over the last 3-4 years, you’ve really brought the ability to make high-quality films to people who previously had to settle for being dreamers.

That’s something you don’t have to take the time to do, but you do it.

So thank you.

July 8th, 2012 @ 7:08 am

i have a huge collection of 3d models nearly 20GB just waiting for the plugin to throw them in life … but i think that motion design pack is something special we cannot find anywhere out of VC! bet all of the models of this pack is made or designed by AK himself! i think no one can be more creative than AK in abstract stuff!

July 8th, 2012 @ 7:20 am

Really great and very hard work Andrew
Yes of course you and guys must have a vacation after all the hard work
Enjoy guys :)

July 8th, 2012 @ 7:21 am

Andrew, I have a suggestion for a furure pack: “Planetary and Celetial Objecs” Pack, with planets, (ring, atmospheric layers), asteroids, comets, nebula, etc… I’d buy it!

    July 8th, 2012 @ 7:34 am

While the models themselves may certainly be simple enough, it’s texture maps you could include that would make it shine. Great for Sci-Fi scenes. Love the other packs too.

    Bob K
    July 8th, 2012 @ 8:12 am

I completely agree! I have developed a few variations of our Solar system using 3DS Max, and I can tell you for me it’s a grueling task that’s a full 2 days of placing and adjusting lighting and DOF.
I’d definitely put a celestial pack to good use.

AK,do you have any tutorials about this plug-in, you know, like the Optical Flares, you gave us 4 awesome tutorials to teach us how to use it in our work.

Angel
July 8th, 2012 @ 8:20 am

Dear Andrew, I believe the next ideas should have been a big part of this project.
1. Being able to manipulate the water objects such that they actually move and respond like water.
2.Such objects and well, all objects should be able to respond to gravity as well bounce and move around accordingly, again because of gravity.

I believe this would have made a greater number of people attracted to the product (like me).
May be in the future??

    James
    July 8th, 2012 @ 8:57 am

He’s explained countless times why there is no physics engine. It would be incredibly slow and no direct control of objects (simulation). Element isn’t meant to replace a 3d program…and speed is its primary goal…

July 8th, 2012 @ 8:41 am

Ay-e ay ay!! Hahaha I’m going crazy seeing all that new stuff! On VideoCopilot, it’s look very atractive; I got to buy it every single thing for “Element 3D”. But I have one question Andrew, I got this video card: EN8400GS Silent 1GB DDR2 …I know 1GB it a lot for a video card. But do You think it going to work well? Or may I have to change it, if yes can you recomend me a great one or maybe the one you have?

Other thing that will be super-mega awesome! is if you make a tutorial with “Element 3D”, and with the motorcycle that you show in the last post, maybe you can put Sam on the motorcycle taking ride… Or maybe if you see the iRobot Making Of (Will Smith) the gun was a 3D gun… If you do something like that, more people get excited and buy it… I mean, I’ll going to buy it anyways. But I will love to learn something like that Mr. Kramer.
(I also do photoshop tutorials in Spanish, sometimes in English, and when people sign up on my website, I give them the option to send me a message asking them what kind of tutorial they will like to see… That way I know what people is looking for and I do the tutorial. I think one reason people will buy all these new stuff, it is because they want to do some 3D animations and then import it to a their videos or films… Anyway, thank you Andrew for your time, and God bless you man! and your family too)

Sami Elaasar
July 8th, 2012 @ 8:41 am

“it does NOT do physics since simulations since you lose control of Objects”

I’m usually no grammar Nazi, but there was a typo that you might want to fix.
The plug-in looks great. Keep up the great work.
Cheers!

Maybe, just maybe, this will give a giant smack in the mouth to all the people who were saying “ where are MY tutorials….i can’t work without VC” and yes Andrew you are right, you ALL deserve a vacation after this but something tells me you wont have the time. Your beautiful wife had the new baby yet?

July 8th, 2012 @ 8:58 am

Andrew, you guys are awesome, I was wondering what to do about models, and, it’s like you can read our minds. Thanks so much for this addition. Can’t wait to get all of them!

July 8th, 2012 @ 9:01 am

solution:

1. download “google sketchup”

2. go to “3D warehouse” online (millions of awesome/pro-level free models)

3. download the model(s) you like as sketchup file (textures included)

4a. modify in sketchup (or not) and export as obj/fxb
4b. export as .whatever, then modify in your favorite 3D software

5. export as obj or fxb if needed and use in element 3D

you’re welcome (sorry AK)

I worked for a civil engineering firm that used Google Sketch. They were able to do some amazing things with it–creating builds, environmental improvement concepts, landscaping, etc., but it was mostly related to architecture or civil engineering. Even the samples I’ve seen mostly involve those two industries. So yes, there are some good files to be had there, but what VC offers is polished and easily accessible.

no it wont replace AK’s stuff, yet, do a search on 3D warehouse for “space shuttle” or “warthog” from halo. People are modelling in maya/3d studio and then importing. you’d be surprised at the quality:

You guys are really thick. Speculator is offering fine advice here. Google Warehouse is a GREAT place to obtain free models. People who actually want to learn VFX (and not just plug and play Andrews stuff all the time) will find it very helpful.

    Two other resources:
    Blendswap.com
    thefree3dmodels.com

This looks awesome, but I notice that they are mostly “small size” object, It might be nice if we can have some large object such as vehicles.. buildings, furniture, trees, or even robot?

    July 8th, 2012 @ 10:28 am

What AK and VCP has not included in his packs, you can probably download from various sources. TurboSquid, Google Sketchup, etc. Do a search for 3D model and see. As long as it’s in .bj format, you should be good to go.

im not sure if i will get the models pack! cuz lets be honest for sec you can find most of the models free online! maybe not 100% the same but hey its free! but for the main plugin oh hell ya i will buyit also the material pack is not bad idea to go with the plugin ;)

cheers

This is freaky, you’re psychic…I have been downloading all of the cheapest or free .obj files I could find on the net (in preparation of my copy of Elements 3D) …a lot of them are pathetic as you can imagine. This is an answered prayer. Like I said before, keep doing what you’re doing co you’re a living legend. Seriously. Thank you. is there going to be a vehicle pack?
If not i would advise you to create one because i am sure not the only one who wants to amazing vehicles easily control in after effects!
Thanks man

July 8th, 2012 @ 10:44 am

Andrew,
Will there be a listing of what is in each Pack?

While Projectile Weapons is definitely on my list, a full listing may inform my second choice for purchasing another model pack. I am not a sports guy, but the baseball appeals to me for recreating the baseball scene from Chronicle as an exercise, for instance.

Also, any plans on releasing a vehicles, Military vehicle, or Sci-Fi ship pack in the future?

Thanks

How well can these models (and element) composite into live action footage? I haven’t seen you do any demonstrations on anything besides motion graphics, and I’m curious how useful it will be for those of us more inclined to incorporate with footage.

I have a question . If you animate a rolling ball in a 3d program like 3ds max and you import it’s obj file to element , will it still be animated? and can you texture it too? thanks

    Craig Paup
    July 9th, 2012 @ 8:25 am

No. Translational operations are not part of any object format…they’re a function of the scene format…and each animation package handles it differently, in it’s own unique way.

July 8th, 2012 @ 5:06 pm

Thanks a lot Andrew but my question is “can someone slice up the 3d objects(with the plugin) or animate the ear piece for instance to stick on someones head as can be done in a 3d program”?

    July 8th, 2012 @ 11:18 pm

Element 3D can’t edit the models, but you can modify in most 3D apps, re-save changes and load in your newly edited .obj into Elements 3D again.

July 8th, 2012 @ 4:14 pm

I’m interested in seeing how well Element integrates with real footage.
Also, is this a Midnight release PST?

    Kevin M
    July 8th, 2012 @ 4:46 pm

It’s likely that it will integrate as well as you make it do so. For example, 3d track > Element 3D import > Place object in 3d space > CC > Fine Tune (Shadows, reflections, lighting, etc) > Animate if needed

    Daniel Valenzuela

So, are we able to track footage with say, BouJou or the Foundry’s Tracker and have these (AMAZING) 3d objects tracked into the film? I’m still a bit in the dark as to the extent of 3d motion tracking.

I should also say thanks and mention that you, Mr. Kramer, have made my experience with VFX one to remember. You are most excellent at what you do.

Dan
July 8th, 2012 @ 6:15 pm

I guess my only concern with element and these awesome 3d packs is:

Does this make VFX and motion graphics TOO easy? I mean, some people make livings based off this (and I am sure trying to), but if 10 year olds can use element to make the same awesome graphics as a professionals then wouldn’t that be detrimental to the profession?

    TravelerX
    July 8th, 2012 @ 7:05 pm

I thought about that once i watched the video. I think We still need to deal with Art direction, storyboard and concept etc… and that is not some 10 year olds or amateur can be dealing with. It’s all about the ideas and branding. Not just pushing the button :)

    Hugo Strange
    July 8th, 2012 @ 7:18 pm

Well think of it this way, There are 10 year old kids using After Effect,3D studio Max,Premiere,Photoshop ect… (look on youtube) for the past 10 years plus !

People have been BUYING and others downloading AE,Photoshop for close to 12 years now !!! Have you seen a decrees in creativity.. or are Artist abandoning these packages , because of saturation in the market (12 years of tools at the hands of 10 year olds)

Here’s another test you can take at home… get a 10 year old, give him or her a pencil and white sheet of paper then have them draw anything they want… if you see an art at the level of a professional.. then take that kid to an art school A.S.A.P ….
With the amount (saturation) of pencils and white sheets of paper out there, anyone can be a designer or comic book writer right?

Motion graphic designers, artist, painters etc shouldn’t get hired by any company if your worried about over saturation. I’m sure ILM and J.J. Abrams are just wasting there money by paying adults for Graphics/VFX ?!

They should get a kid to do the next Transformers/AVATAR VFX they already have the tools downloaded.

    …right ?

    Dan
    July 8th, 2012 @ 8:53 pm

Those are definitely good points. Puts my mind at ease a bit… except for the drawing thing. At ten years old I could barely draw stick figures haha. I still struggle with drawing today but I still manage to get past that. My editing skills along with knowledge of After Effects and VFX definitely are more honed than sketching masterpieces.

    KevinM
    July 8th, 2012 @ 9:17 pm

Actually, when I was in 6th grade a classmate/friend of mine went through the ENTIRE pre-production process from boards, script, set layouts, previs, etc. This was before we really knew what all these things were – but we wanted to be as prepared as possible. Age isn’t the issue here. It’s passion. A 30 year old independent film maker could very well do less work to prep than a 10 year old indie film maker. It’s individualized. Now, as for the topic – of course there are needs for professionals. Just because Element 3D allows for easier integration of 3D elements into the AE world, doesn’t mean we’re going to see a 10 year old, or a 40 year old for that matter, create the next AVATAR. Quality begets quantity, always. There’s always the need for professionals, even with C-iFX coming out. All the advancement in tools means, is that the professionals can have an easier time making even MORE ridiculous quality…. whereas someone else can have an easier time making even MORE ridiculous, less quality. Get it? Don’t worry about who is more professional – worry about being better at what you do.

    Dan
    July 8th, 2012 @ 10:02 pm

Really well said. You made some great points there.

    Caleb
    July 8th, 2012 @ 10:28 pm

Kevin had some great points. I know that for me, this means that I’m now able to dive into something that was always inaccessible to me simply due to cost and time it takes for a real 3D rig. It doesn’t, however mean that I’m now competing with the top dogs because I have access to some good looking 3D. Plus, part of the job of being a professional in the market is evolving with technology and always pushing the boundaries. Find ways to be even more innovative now, now that 3D is getting even more accessible. I think this very site is a great example. What sets the creative professionals apart from the amateurs is how they implement what they learn. You can find tons of youtube videos of exact copies of VC tutorials. However, the creative professional grabs these tools up and figures out creative ways to implement those tools and that knowledge into their workflow to make it even faster and more creative.

    July 9th, 2012 @ 12:25 am

When the crossbow was invented they said it was the weapon to end all wars. When the typewriter came out they said that no one would ever hand write anything ever again. When the computer came out they said that it would eliminate so many jobs that entire economies would collapse. When 3D graphics came along everyone said that no one would ever do 2D ever again. New tools that do different jobs do not eliminate the old tools. They just create a new ways of doing things and new things to do. Pretty soon many household robots may be common place (as robotic vacuum cleaner robots are becoming now) and people will once again give in to fear instead of history and claim that the sky will fall and all will be ruined.
Element 3D will not take anything away from anyone, it will only add to the capabilities and demand for all skills and the bar for all is raised once again. The people who bemoan the coming of great things are the ones who simply don’t want to embrace change, no matter how positive it will be in reality.

    Dan
    July 9th, 2012 @ 6:30 am

Don’t get me wrong, i’ve been strongly anticipating element 3d’s release since I realized it was being produced over a year ago. Tomorrow is like Christmas in July and I can’t wait to start working with it. There was just that little corner of my brain that usually has something else to “say about that”. Honestly, I cannot wait. I’ve been looking for a long time where to go now with my motion design work, and I’ve always known 3D is the way to go. But man, I stayed away because the entry price was too high and the learning curve was too great. This is amazing, though. To finally have a great way to get awesome looking 3D in after effects without having to learn how to use yet another piece of software is fantastic! As a designer on staff at a local church, there’s two things I’m short on: cash and time, so this makes it so much easier on me. Great work, VC. Way to be freakin innovative!

    July 8th, 2012 @ 11:25 pm

You can alwar start with a free app like Blender (Win and Mac) or Hexagon (also free at the moment) Bith will allow you to learn modelling and export out an .obj file. Lwarning curve is high, just like AE was in the beginning.

Its not that awesome, its just 3D model pack. There is many many free packages out there and I think its wasting money to buy these packs. Because there is many many cheap packages with awesome 3D models for companies that they have years experience. And this pack lacking many many objects such as building, vehicles, characters,etc..

July 9th, 2012 @ 7:30 am

AK, I know you said animation from 3d programs is not supported in this version of element but could you potentially export a model from each frame of an animation and animate that way?

Obviously a complete pain in the rear but still possibly a whole lot quicker than some render times of a complex scene.

ten

    July 9th, 2012 @ 8:13 am

This is a good question. I was also thinking about this solution whether it becomes handy or not. But hey, since the ‘Motion Pictures’ are made of Still Frames, why not give it a try ? But I believe, we have to generate the sequence manually inside the After Effects, instead of an ‘Automatic .OBJ Sequence Export.’ Which requires a lot .OBJ files, possessing a single frame pose, named subsequently and separately. What would you think Andrew, are we on the right track ?

    ten

You need to make something for wedding videographer I think an element 3d with flowers, candles, elements of love. We like to use ProShow Producer for slides and I am trying to figure out a way to put 3d to a slide show and I think your product may be a good way of doing it but the content may be a little thin for weddings. Just a thought I don’t expect you to make something for me but there might be a lot of videographers that want to do the same thing.

I’m also very interested on Andrew’s take on this. It seems to me that only obj and fbx files can be used, which would be a bummer since it makes it impractical to use to generate 3d text inside AE.

Ohh, I just saw the ‘Extrude’ button in the GUI! :D Fanstastic, this makes me so happy… I guess Mr. Kramer would post a tut in the future to show this functionality. So happy!

Andrew,

You should really make a ‘Corporate Pack’, for instance: earth globes, money signs, calculators, pencil, pen, savvy pig, pie charts, bar charts, people icons, scales of justice, desks, computers, filing cabinets, etc.

That kind of stuff.

Cannot wait for this! Question: Will you be bringing out other 3D Model Packs in the future? Such as a Vehicle Pack etc.

I am so excited about this product, thank you for you constant dedication to motion graphics and most importantly us.

I understood everything in the video, very clear and concise. But I would like to see a tutorial on textures, how did you create the texture for the headphones. How does it automatically wrap around them?

This is a powerful system with endless possibilities. Knowing all aspects will help me take advantage of these amazing products.

Thank you.

P.S. Thought you were going to go back to the animation engine

Hey Andrew if you add something to this pack, will users who bought it get it for free or pay a little more? Or will you not change this pack?
