‘Demon Cam’ Film Promo Now Online!

Demon-Cam_Online

Discover the secret of the Orb! Unleash the demons… with Demon Cam.

In the beginning of the year our team decided we wanted to try something new and take on a project with creative challenges  and help push the limits of our tutorials.   Instead of making a single shot-effect, we wanted to try creating a real-world project with a bigger scope and difficult visual effects that we could share with the community…  With a little inspiration from Sam Loya 2007, we created Demon Cam!

Don’t let our secret be lost for centuries,  help spread the word!

Did you notice that a lot of the cuts are to breasts? I know that most of your audience is men, but seriously…. also you shouldn’t moderate comments so heavily. It just reduces your credibility. Better to not have comments at all.

August 9th, 2011 @ 3:06 pm

wow! somewhat of a sellout.

Come on, all this time on a visual FX site you’ve been selling us an Iphone app?

    August 10th, 2011 @ 6:48 am

How is that a sellout? With all the existing software the guy has put out, it’s pretty clear they know their way around code. Besides, it’s a VFX app, so I don’t see it as a stretch at all.

    Rob
    August 10th, 2011 @ 8:02 am

Wow, a guy who provides you with free tutorials and shares his valuable knowledge with you for no cost what so ever creates a fun app for a phone and you feel that you should insult the VC team?

Nice one. Way to be grateful dude.

*Looks great VC, looking forward to the tuts! :D

    chad bennett
    August 10th, 2011 @ 8:33 am

August 9th, 2011 @ 3:08 pm

Amazing Job Andrew!
It was very worth the wait! It was fantastic!

Cheers from Toronto!! And one request if I may, I’m sure a TON of us would love to see a tutorial or video blog about your post production and production equipment. What kind and how you set up your workstation, displays, hardware, cameras, rigs and such. Specially related to how this spot was created.

Hopefully you share those insights with us sometime.

Again CONGRATS and keep the amazing job!

    August 9th, 2011 @ 4:13 pm

We are going to get into all the details for the production with a full behind the scenes video and several tutorials. The idea was to create a project that could test the limits and require challenging visual effects. But from those challenges we will be creating tutorials and blog posts to teach about our discoveries. Stay tuned!

August 9th, 2011 @ 3:15 pm

Wow! The most amazing advertisement I have ever seen!

August 9th, 2011 @ 3:15 pm

I liked it but thought there was little too much narration. Maybe some of the actors should have had dialog. Just my opinion. Everything looked cool otherwise. Nice job Andrew and Gang.

shaefy
August 9th, 2011 @ 3:16 pm

That was awesome!

Eric
August 9th, 2011 @ 3:17 pm

hey Andrew… Don’t you think you’ve given enough with tutorials and things? Why not produce a real full-feature and send it to TIFF or Cannes? You have everything that it takes to be a great director + you have the great luck (well not luck you more than earned it) to have a very able team working with you.

I was presenting a short film here in Montreal last week (Fantasia), and while partying with other filmmakers we were talking about AE and stuff and… Everybody knows you and they (we) copy your stuff into our own movies. It’s awesome that you could work on blockbusters but man, look at the beginning of this demoncam thriller, you can do stuff ILM does only by yourself. Free yourself from us friend!! Fly, Andrew, fly!!! Hahahaha!!! Make a movie, you’ll get zillionnaire just with your fans’ entries at the theaters ooahahahaha!! Awesome thriller by the way : )

    August 9th, 2011 @ 4:47 pm

Thanks Eric. This project was a great opportunity to challenge myself and the team to do something bigger. I hope it doesn’t stop here and I appreciate the sentiment. Truly.

    I totally agree !!!!

    Eric Mc Guire
    August 9th, 2011 @ 5:11 pm

Awesome, but how did you that Andrew? A TUTORIAL WOULD BE VERY WELCOME HERE. kidding. no but the flying cams are crazy I have no idea how you did that. But I still want my Element licence don’t forget us !!! XD Funny thing, it was also the name of the movie I submitted to Fantasia! It’s 3 mins if you guys want to watch. Thanks again for everything Andrew! http://vimeo.com/21606426

    Eric
    August 9th, 2011 @ 6:01 pm

Hmm.. Sorry I did not think enough before posting, but I did not intend to promote myself on VC, I just wanted Andrew to watch. Ok, I’m done now :S

    Raghav91
    August 9th, 2011 @ 11:57 pm

what you just said is so true! totally agree. btw watched the video ‘elements’. AMAZING!!

I agree with what you said, Eric. And also, I checked out your video, and it’s great! Really nice effects! You don’t need to apologize for showing off your stuff. Keep it up!

August 9th, 2011 @ 3:19 pm

Hey very cool man.
Question; will you be releasing this app on Android supported phones?

    Joe M
    August 13th, 2011 @ 3:47 am

For Androïd you have “Zombie Booth” available on android market with good features … But now, I prefer Demon Cam

Remington
August 9th, 2011 @ 3:20 pm

Wow… I can’t believe it was all about an iPhone app!! Well, obviously the purpose was to do the effects and for tutorials but the fact that it is based on an app is just awesome. I can’t believe you managed to keep that a secret so long!

Also, I think its hilarious that the first one to review it on the app store was Tino!!

Joe
August 9th, 2011 @ 3:21 pm

Brilliant! I was laughing my a** off when I realized it was all a commercial for an iPhone app. My favorite visual effect was when the orb was smashed into a million pieces.

Demon Cam will definitely be featured in Apple’s New and Noteworthy. Awesome job Andrew and team. :)

August 9th, 2011 @ 3:21 pm

This is a very beautiful work as always BUT just disappointed to discover that it is an ad for apple ! The work of VC is so beautiful and respectful that I don’t like the idea of making an ad for Apple…
But I repeat this is very beautiful work !!
I cant wait for the tutorials !!!

murad
August 9th, 2011 @ 3:29 pm

brilliant effects as usual, but i was hoping that it’d be something more substantial than an ad for app. especially with all the hype around the project. come on Andrew, we all know you CAN do so much better! make a freakin movie!

Well… what does one say… Video Copilot is fast becoming “Legendary”. The scope and breadth of this project is phenomenal… it takes iOS apps and their promotion to an astounding new level. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the crew at Apple jump all over this for the forthcoming iOS5 and iPhone5 launch… they’d be fools not too.

Congratulations Andrew and your dedicated team.

Great job, as usual, Andrew.

I hope to steal … uh, use … your techniques.

Just when you thought things couldn’t get better.
VC has its own iPhone app! I already retweeted it to my followers. This must be a reason for people to finally buy an iPhone and scare the hell out of people.
I also hope, now you’ve done some real life film, you teach us a bit about lighting a scene, type of lights, color temperature etc.
I’m blown away by this and I’m probably gonna watch it a lot of times over and over again.
I can’t wait to see the tutorials coming from this and I’m counting down the days for Element3D to come out so I can buy it and use it in a documentary I’m working on.
Thanks a million!

Hey! Great short film. I think a cool tutorial to do would be advanced multipass keying. Some of the shots looked like they were a bit challenging to key properly. You could do a short-ish tutorial demonstrating some of keylights advanced features like the inside/outside masks and the alpha bias!

Dave Filoi
August 9th, 2011 @ 5:31 pm

Lady appearing from portal with warping BG and Orb shatter was the best part for me. Great work. Sorry to say but you need to fire the guy pushing on the track shot at 0:32 but AWSOME WORK YO!! Can’t Wait for the Tutorial!!

(Not meant as a downer- just saying- not crazy about demons myself and the way it looks like the girls are about to kiss since I’m a Christian, Just my opinion.
But everything else was great! Are you going to show how you did some of the programming for the app itself?

I was just thinking what’s up with the lesbian undertones?? Come on VCP, I know sex sells but you’re better than that. Production value was excellent, the music, the voice over, of course the vfx. I second what someone else wrote about you and your team jumping into a feature film.

wow nice move to hit the app market, thought you were a PC man Andrew:-)…for me it all comes down to the “technique” based training you provide…EG ‘heres something cool’ and ‘heres the core technique in how to achieve it’. Thats the synergy between me the product purchaser and you the training provider…The bonus lies in the fun way its delivered, Kramer’s mad sense of humor, watching a company evolve!

cheers

Wow, incredible work! I’m going to be bored now that I don’t have reason to incessantly refresh the VC website. Can’t wait for tutorials! Any chance that you could do some of the 3D set construction tutorials in blender for us frugal folks? Hey Andrew, I’m here to say: “Congratulation”, with this project you put Videocopilot in another level. from a video joke to a enterprise, you show us that we can do a lot with so few devices. Just a computer and some after effects. I believe that videocopilot will grow up … but I hope that you don’t let your fans … please keep with tutorials you are so funny and criative. One more time, you’re the guy behind the popular after effects

August 9th, 2011 @ 8:00 pm

I would love to get this…. but I’m an Android freak. I really enjoyed the shots from the promo though, very well done!

Mark
August 9th, 2011 @ 8:00 pm

I went to the app store and typed in “demon cam” and got the message “not found, do you mean lemon cam?”

Now THAT could be a million dollar idea. Turns your head into a talking lemon. As to the short movie, why does every team of guy’s (let’s admit it, often geeky guys) make any excuse to have HOT women in their films? It’s hilarious. I thought this was going to turn into porn at one stage. But I have to say I love the Video Copilot team and the women were great! Should have been more women. And a pillow fight in lingerie.

HECK YES!! Nothing more disappointing than seeing Apple exclusives everywhere! Andrew is a Teacher for the people! If Video Copilot doesn’t come out with an Android app I’m sure he would sue himself for being inconvenient! I’m almost 1% sure that that’s an actual offence.

August 9th, 2011 @ 11:20 pm

A lot of innovative concepts here, using a short to teach tutorials — even if it promotes an app.

Too bad you chose to go the shady route with the servant girl – and even having the girls almost kiss — that’s unfortunate and surprisingly low class for you. VC never had to sell sex to be successful, why start lowering your level?!

I’m doubting fathers watching this would want their daughters cast in this role…

My 2 cents…

looks cool, but in all honesty, this is just a really long advert – disappointing to an extent as you could have promoted the app by giving out a notice and a demo, and made the film anyway and the film would have been more aweseom with perhaps a stronger story(!)… i feel violated, but still love you guys anyhow!

What’s up with people wanting “a” tutorial? I see several tutorials coming out of this. As for the people posting “I’m first” when they’re actually 20th…. seriously?

Awesome. Great stuff, Andrew. Kudos to you and the Video Copilot team. Great take on the the instructional video genre. Didn’t even expect it until the orb became the iPhone. Really sets the bar higher. Definitely worth the wait.

Wonderful work and splendid integration of live footage and CG!

And the blending and colour matching is done immaculately. Congratulations!

A constructive observation: The push-in shot along the table starting at 0:32 has in the foreground a very still and tranquil flame of the candle while the torches on the wall are more in sync with the sounds and the atmos. It is not until 1:05 that the candle flame finally wiggles…

Awesome vid! And the actual product looks great, too! It was nice to finally see what all of the fuss was about. I agree with what others are saying, in that I hope to see a few tutorials come out of this.

Also, Mr. Kramer, you need to make more movies! Although that means less tutorials…so maybe not.

Awesome! So funny… and sexy! :D The tutorial I want to see first is breaking the ball. There are a lots of tutorials on YouTube, but none of them is exact. You will probably make tutorial in 3Ds Max, but I would appriciate if you have Maya, that you make a tutorial in Maya too.

Poor Sam. Did his soul get smashed to bits in the orb? “Speak to us Sam Loya, you’re our only hope.”

Will you update the VC site product page to link to the DemonCam page?

August 10th, 2011 @ 3:45 pm

Andrew, this is not about Demon Cam.

This is about me, and is simple: I want to say Thank you.

I’ve started with the post production and visual effects stuff in March 2011, (always was my passion, but I take a long time to remember it and start to doing it) my life has changed since I´ve found your website. I remember it was with the “Energy Field” tutorial (with the picture of a street). That, was my first test on After Effects. In 1 week I saw all your tutorials, day and night, and I’ve learned a lot. Your way to share and explain all your knowledgment is amazing. You make every tutorial simple so everyone can learn it and you also always explain the basics like “hit return to change the name of the layer”.

So again, Thank you for share your Grace with us, particular with me.

(I was thinking about send you an email on the web site, but I hope some day you have a little time to read this message)

I commented on Youtube yesterday, but just wanted to chime in here and throw some applause at the VC team!! Well done guys, truly well done! Neat App. I kid you not, this is the first time I have ever wanted an iphone. But I don’t want it bad enough to go get one, so I hope you’ll port this over to the Andrewd marketplace – er – android.

I’d love to play with this app on my droid x.

Looking forward to the tutorials and the release of Element.

Keep up the great work VC!

August 10th, 2011 @ 6:23 pm

Andrew,

I just wanted to tell you I have been a fan for years now, I check your site regularly to see what you are doing next. I try to do shoe string budget shorts in my spare time and you always seem to inspire me to keep trying. I thank you for that and your great tutorials. I began watching your tutorials even before I could afford a copy of Adobe’s suite after I was able to save and get CS4 you guided me along the way to learning to use After Effects. Though I still am not to the point of really doing my own stuff I hope one day that it all clicks with me and I am able to create some really original effects of my own. I loved your title work in Star Trek and the effects in Super 8 also but this really blew me away! Man never forget us you INSPIRE US so much. Thank you!

August 10th, 2011 @ 7:40 pm

Great app and great concept… tested it out on iOS5 beta 5 and it crashed on me while it was compiling the video with the effects, also the video will not play when you preview, it only plays sound… any idea on updates for iOS 5.0 testing? thanks and congratulations on a great product.

August 11th, 2011 @ 12:15 am

We went to Italy last week and as I sat in the airport waiting for my flight some video advertising came up for an agency and they clearly used a few of your tutorials – including one where they’d simply typed their agency name in place of Video Copilot. Made me laugh – so I hope you make enough out of all of this to enjoy a happy life.

I’ve bought your app (and your other stuff!) which is the best way I can think of to say thankyou. LOL, nothing says thankyou more than your credit card.

Are you gonna make this an AE plugin too? That would be awesome!

August 11th, 2011 @ 2:15 am

Hey what about Android ?
and what are these soundtracks in the promo ?

Ben
August 11th, 2011 @ 2:54 am

Woaaahhh Andrew. Downloaded the app! I wanted to do the demon face on AE but just didnt have time. This makes it a whole lot easier. One thing is that its annoying as if uploaded to youtube the video is very thin due to iPhone/Ipod cameras. But awesome app :)

    August 11th, 2011 @ 3:59 am

You should be able to film the video with the camera sideways for a normal aspect ratio upload. Hope this helps!

August 11th, 2011 @ 3:00 am

awesome stuff!!
but I got to be honest.. at first I thought it’s a joke.. in crazy VFX style… until I really see the app in the app store I was like wow.. this thing is real!? lol

    August 11th, 2011 @ 4:06 am

    In all seriousness now..
As cool as this little app is, I can’t help to think how much more it can be!
What if you can import other faces you make (not just demon, wolf man, robot, or an Andrew Kramer face) that’ll make this shape shifting possibility endless!
And I also can’t help to feel that this can be a neat plug in for AE too, I mean if you can make something as crazy as Optical Flare or the upcoming Element… I have no doubt you can make this into a new AE plug-in. I would totally get it if it’s out for AE~

What was the first idea the app or video?

OMG! To be honest, everything you lay you hands on is as perfect as God’s Big Wish. Please tell me a movie that you either directed or worked on. I would love to buy all the copies. If you don’t have one, Its time you did something about it. We are waiting man!
A friend introduced me to VC in Oct. 2008. I know about AE b’se of you Andrew! ‘Basic Sky Replacement’, I bet u don’t remember how u did that haha.. coz you are so in to complex comps. I have watched every tut and with what I learn from it, I create new things. I do all this for fun cos I live in a country where motion graphics is still under rated.

Hey! Im just speechless! I love everything about Video Copilot! long live…

Hmm, guess you’re just an apple user. Cross platforming is how you make things big. Just saying. Not going to get the penetration with this app that you’re looking for. I will NEVER own an apple product. EVER. I do, however, want this app. There is a demand. Now supply it. :)

Justin
August 11th, 2011 @ 12:11 pm

One more thing.

Did you supply the voice over? It sounds like it might be you. What did you use to distort the voice? I’m looking for the best software to change a person’s voice.

Guess we’ll see. Good luck though. Still waiting on the ATOM!!!!

VFX are stellar, of course. Way too much reliance on the VO narration, though. Would have been way better to focus on telling the story with the visuals instead of spelling everything out ad nauseam with the voice over.

    August 11th, 2011 @ 3:47 pm

I think it is a good idea, first because as you can see the comments, there are many requests and questions about this and second – this app will spread more widely among all your fans. Very nice Andrew & team, but I have admit I cracked up when she turned it into a phone. I was all in the atmosphere of it and then she turns into a PHONE?!

The effects are, as expected, great. The acting well… let’s just say some things were a bit funny to me, didn’t seem genuine(see body moves and mimic at 1:32) but then again it’s still an app commercial.

Over all good job, all of you, not that you need any more appreciation; I see people have been posting like crazy here.

Instead of doing just apps, wouldn’t you guys at VC rather make movies like this one? We, your fan base could finance them through a donation system… make each frame 1 dollar, I’d buy a few.

Cheers,
Alex.

Great app – I brought it only because of the great shot at 1:03 in the long promotion video. Nature Fx > Special Fx, but it is close ;-)

August 13th, 2011 @ 6:16 am

I can’t wait to see what tutorials you have in store for us based on this video. I don’t have an iPhone, but my girlfriend does and I got her to download it, she loves it. Unfortunately if I ever do the demon face effects through after effects, she is no longer impressed. Thanks Andrew.

August 13th, 2011 @ 6:35 am

best trailer i’ve ever seen i will buy this app even if it costs a 1000 dollars!!!!

August 13th, 2011 @ 7:12 am

I only had a chance to watch part of the video, ( up to were the orb turns into an iPhone)but from what i saw it was a heck of job! Well done to all involved..

I enjoyed seeing some of the past tutorials encompased in there. And nice orb effect you choose and the transitions were really smooth.

I too was a litle disappointed though seeing it was an app for an iPhone in the end… though i think that is cool and should be a lot of fun for iPhone users. One can’t blame me or others for our dissapointment hopeing for or getting ourselves psyched in expectance of some really cool Mac or PC app.

Though who knows… is there a possible transition of this app in the future for web cams or and AE script or something…?

Personally i’m still waiting for the full length feature film the Demon Cam video also kinda got me psyched and hopeing for now… maybe even a televised mini series for the fall 2012 line up?

As mentnioned – i really enjoyed some of the techniques you incorporated into the Demon Cam video… can’t wait to finish watching it.
And again, well done to all involved…

-chase-

Why the focus on Boobs??!!
please, Andrew make it to the point. No need for two ladies showing their breast and focusing on their THINGS by director to promote your product.
It’s just a piece of advice I suppose you’ll take it in consideration. Thank you.

The problem is that the demon orb pieces are exclusively used to build iphones. (You can see that in the promo). So not sure if it would even be possible to port it over to android.

Hi there Andrew,

I’ve just witnessed one serious blockbuster-eat-your-heart-out movie… Congrats on this fine piece of work.
Now here’s the thing….

I am seriously searching for a videotutorial when in comes to creating text as seen in your film at time 4:00 till 4:05 min.

I don’t expect you will cover this in the tutorials to come because it’s been created in 3DS Max or Cinema 4D.

Can you, or anyone else, tell me where to find a good solid tutorial which covers this type creating, meshing, animating this shot????????

Many thanks for the fun so far (and for all the sleepless nights to come after seeing this film….. my girlfriend says hi ;-) )

it’s an amazing app, i love it and i showed it to my students and they loved it as well. now since i can’t code iOS i’m hoping that you fill this niche that is untapped in the iPad world.. we need a compositing software already.. the iOS devices can track, paint, vector, filters, layers, and do video aren’t these all the elements you need for compositing? yet there’s not one app that does that.. please i would love to see you guys come up with this for an iPad so that i can work when i’m out and about. thanks again.

My team has been inspired of the AE stuff I do (most of it was created from your pieces of your tutorials!). Your site was the #1 recommendation I gave them to start learning on their own time. There’s fire in them for AE and vfx now! First step..muzzle flashes! Hard work pays off, I have a goal to inspire as many people as you one day…(some feature film work wouldn’t hurt lol!) THANKS!
