Using various roto and split-screen effects we transformed a two-man SWAT team into a full squad for this demo scene. Sam Loya reprises his role as the “guy who probably gets killed”, in this exciting industrial saga.
The main goal of this scene was to film everything as if we had a dozen guys instead of just two. Don’t just shoot things that will be easy to composite later, push the limits and make the scene more dynamic.
Stay-tuned for tips on using the new Roto-Brush in AE CS5 as well as other split-screen and masking solutions that can be achieved in all versions of After Effects.

Very nice. I hope you filmed it with a stationary (tripod) cam for each ‘layer’ and then added the shake afterwards on the combined comp – to match multiple handheld shots would have to be an absolute nightmare! Nice colour correction too, good job. Sam is looking a bit grey there now though!!
I think that he might have shot it on a handheld, created a null object mapped the motion tracking data to the null object then parented the ‘layers’ to the null. But to be sure I think AK should tell us.
I think he added some camera shake but there clearly is camera movement on some of the shots – He must have motion tracked the plates and rotoscope them…must have been a nightmare to match – I really really really want to see how he did this as I have some footage I’d love to test it on…actually…I have some 3k footage (shot with RED) of WWII soldiers (actors) that I wouldn’t mind volunteering for his Tutorial…there is camera movement, different takes…could be an epic tutorial
It’s all post cam moves in shots with more than two guys. Those shots lack parallax shifts and lens distortion. Very wiggle(y). The exception is the L to R panning shot with seven guys.

I could see a small glitch when they line up in front of the door to shoot Sam. When the 3rd person comes beside the 2nd person, we can see some masking issue there.

Poor Sam, he always dies. You made a lot of tutorials where someone dies. But always it is Sam.
First I tought that he’ll kill these guys with his pistol. But that didn’t made any sense, because Sam has to die in your videos.

That looked good. Sam had a real bad day, “again”, poor fella. He would have been a good guy back in the old Star Trek series that beamed down as the extra crew member. You know, the one who you knew was gonna get it once they arrived on the strange planet. I liked the green, it set a certain mood for the scene. I guess you could make a scene whatever color you wanted. Hey, I know, apply Colorama LOL. Good work AK and crew.

I think the soundtrack its not very adequate, its too epic and it does not build tension, but other than that it’s a fine job, as always!

brilliant,, as usual. But SAM.. you see all those guns.. and u pull out one gun? A handgun at that? You would be better off just putting your hands up and trying to figure out your excape..
Also… is there a video copilot for locations with layers? Like lets say,, Sam went to jail, a layer of the back seat or the Swat van,, then the Jail, (with bars and everything) If there is no such a thing,, will somebody make one? People like me are too broke to rent a real jail (besides i dont wanna pay to get into one, I just paid 2 get out it)

Great compositing! I think you went a bit too far with the color look – maybe a 60-70% opacity on the would make it look less like a “OMFG, I need to use my Magic Bullet Looks to the frickin’ MAX!”-student film.
I didn’t really like the music, especially the choir-stuff in the middle was very much over-the-top in my opinion. A suspenseful low-key beat-driven kind of sound would’ve made it more interesting, I think.
But the point was to demonstrate great compositing and rotoscoping – at which you of course succeeded quite brilliantly.
*by “on the” I of course meant “on the color correction adjustment layer”!

I always saw After Effects as THE means by which a low budget operation could produce today what was a very expensive production endeavor just a few years (or perhaps weeks) ago. But combined with the new cameras … and Andrew Kramer … and the machine is fired and ready to roll.
So well tricked-out that my eye is completely fooled.

WOWOWOW can hardly contain my excitement! I neeeeeed the tut for this. We just shot an episode involving an entire swat team that was really just one person with several different guns and different positions and this is right up our alley. initial rotoscoping methods look ok though they are time consuming on our side. This video however looks perfectly clean and really amazing! Like I said can’t wait for that tut

Great job. It show’s that you don’t need a big budget and lot’s of extra’s to get that blockbuster look. Just a bit to green, gradient the sky to blue / gray

People are so critical of the music and color correction when you’re just posting it up for us to view. Andrew, you guys keep doing what you’re doing and making the $$ you earn. I enjoyed the video, much like I do everything you post which of course includes ‘Payment Plan’.

One thing I notice however that looks fake… gun blasts at the end… Maybe it is because so much gun blasts should lighten the dark surroundings, or they are too crisp, or something else I don’t get, but it looks obviously fake to me.

Sure Andrew is a Motion Graphics Guru, but his passion has always been cloning. Luckily, both cloning and killing extras are legal.
Indie movie-makers seem to like using such strong color correction. I don’t really understand why. I always try to use subtle color correction without over doing it, but that’s your preference, and it’s fine. The actors physical movement and physical structure did not suit a real SWAT personnel. And music such as the one used in Terminator 2 – SWAT team infiltrating Cyberdyne systems would be better and suitable. Anyways, you are still the best among us.

A piece of critique about the “crew”.
“The Laser Rule: Treat the muzzle of your firearm as if it is a Laser gun with the beam always on. Whatever the Laser beam touches, it cuts through.”
Although that piece looked really convincing compositing-wise it also looked amateurish as people point guns to their teammates’ backs.
And I do know, the strategic procedure of securing a room was not the focus of the clip. It was turning few into many. But when shooting the “few” one must take into account where are the “many” in the shot.

What you guys fail to realize is that Andrew runs a secret cloning facility under his studio with multiple copies of Sam brewing all the time. This is why he can afford to kill him off so many times.

Andrew!, that was amazing, but i have to say that….(sorry, I dont know if somebody else told you, I cant read all the entries, there are too much)……..but you have a “mistake”.
The scene where you move the cam from right to left, to film the guys entring (22′)….you got this shelf or cupboard kind of duplicated. Now, the question, that could be solved with puppet pin tool or something?, or is that fast that doesnt really matters?.

and thanks for the bloody omaha. that was cool too. But there they have the same problem, bad color grading.
It was too much, and so the result has a very low dynamic range in very high contrast which destroyed parts of the image.
But don’t get me wrong man, I’m a big fan of you and your website and I love what you do.

Very nice it gave me so much ideas, i also find some mistakes in the film, for example in the 21 sec. when the camera move from right to left, if you see in the background the stan or whatever it is near the box, you can see the 2 clips superposed, like it dindnt fit together. I also notice when the SWAT team is waiting for sam they have like i flash light in their guns, but when sam open the door, it seems they even don’t have a flash light. Anyway excelent video, i hope you make a tutorial for this one, i really like it! or maybe another video with more effects, that will be cool! lol

One note on realism and continuity – watch muzzle direction. Line of fire should never cross a friendly. On the original shoot just establish fields of fire and keep the muzzles in “safe” fields.
What kind of insurance does Sam have?
LOVE it! This looks fantastic and i can’t wait to see how you did this.
My only suggestion for enhancing the scene would be to add radio commands and directions: “Approaching warehouse” Bravo 3 take point” “Bravo 1 on stay on my 6″ “Bravo team what’s you’re 20?” “Bravo 4 sweep left” “Approching target”
“Do we have a kill order” “Take him down!”
That kind of thing. It adds a whole other dimention of urgency and texture to the sound and scene, expessially if is overlapping and mildly distorted.
Again, I love your stuff! You make Post-production **awesome** and not just a chore.
very well done on the roto job, i’ve always hated roto because it requires a lot of patience. Tell you the truth i’m never happy with my roto results. i’ve got CS5 and plan on learning the roto brush, hope it makes things easier once learned.

There’s a small mistake: The light form the flashlights of the guns is on Sams stomach, but there is no lenseflare at the gunlights of the swat-team. Actually the lights aren’t on.^^
But it’s till a great scene. The shot with the digital panning was amazing!

the changes of the single scenes is not synchronous to the beat of the music. sometimes the suspense gets lost.

The new rotobrush in CS5 really is amazing, it works wonders.
I recently worked on a shot where a lot of stuff had to be composited behind a subject who wasn’t in front of a green screen, with a lot of camera shake, no less.
I have no idea what I would’ve done without the rotobrush.
Well, I suppose there’s always Mocha.
I do have one gripe with the video though; SWAT doesn’t move or coordinate like that.
But I suppose that’s nitpicking.
Great work, as usual. Unfortunately the only ones who appreciate so much effort for such a short scene is us, the VFX interested “crowd”. For everyone else it`s either a full squad or the PC with some software, which did it all by itself over night.
And to all who didn`t like the coloring or found some “errors” in this roto example: If this scene was just a small part of a new Michael Bay film and you would discover on the Bonus Blu-Ray how the VFX team did it, you probably would be amazed…
Just curious what camera w2as used. Thinking about a new 5D mkII or if I should go the traditional way with a Canon XF300 or something of that nature. I guess what I am asking is if you use a DSLR video camera or a traditional video camera.

@Antti, I agree with you completely. In fact, if you review the comments in the original scene, I pointed that out as well. I’ve always been very impressed with AK’s ability to make a scene look realistic, so I’m thinking this is just a ‘test’ run and that the final scene will be true to life. However, I do think he’s focusing more on the AE techniques rather than developing a realistic SWAT entry scene – which this is far from.
So, this will be put into a tutorial right?

i did something similar a few weeks ago but i didn’t have cs5 so i green screened the actor (me) in and used 3d layers for shadows and had to paint in the video that was out of frame on one shot because my camera can’t ‘zoom out’ enough. my short 1 min video taught me all sorts like 3d tracking, screening, 3d layers, and how frustrating full HD is on a crap Pentium d like mine =P if you want to watch it here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3EeyNdEoSY

How do you do your camera shake in AE?
The technical side is awesome, no doubt. But (and this is being picky about ‘performance’ and ‘reality’ NOT how successful the post production looked) there were a lot of ‘muzzle sweeps’ that would undermine the hyper reality of a SWAT/Operator team. “Muzzle sweeps” are when the business end of the weapon sweeps right past a friendly and means you are pointing your loaded weapon at a buddies head for split seconds at a time.
This is a BIG no no if the team were ‘real’ so it’s some thing to consider when choreographing your actors as they move.
I loved this example. I hope this tutorial comes out soon; I have been waiting so long to learn how to do this. I have tried the roto tool in CS5 and haven’t had results anywhere close to yours.
