I found some time to play around with the powerful 3D Orbit preset and a free icon pack. I created small groups of Icons that were linked to a Null Object and then after making 6 groups, I used the 3D orbit preset to control the smaller spinning groups with a larger spinning group. Similar to how the moon orbits the earth and our earth orbits the sun. ( and our sun of course orbits William Shatner.)
Now, I also used expressions to offset the the layers in each group so the icons did not overlap each other like in this tutorial. Then by animating the values of the orbit preset as well as the scale and rotation of the Null Objects, you can come up with some fun stuff. I also set the layers “Auto-Orient Towards Camera” so they would not turn into flat paper and collapse the universe.
Now if it still doesn’t look good… just add some lens flares and take the rest of the day off! That’s what I did, CYA

Cool stuff! Trying to think of what you could use this for besides graphic design.
kramer for president!!!
Verrrry cool. Would be good for some cheesy slideshow business demos.
Thats greaat
can’t wait!
As usual, your tuts are cool. Can I may make a suggestion? Have you ever tried making a tut where a person,(probably Sam) is walking along and then suddenly – VANISHES, leaving his clothes, jewlery, ipod behind? Please feel free to contact me at my e-mail.
Thanks for all you do A.K.
Alex
Looking good AK
Awesome as usual Mr.Kramer. By the way, where do you get all of the awesome music that you use. (besides pro scores)
i want to ask you if you are going to make the presets for cs5…. if you do when? thxs all your tutorials helped me a lot you are the best!
whats up with the layers over-crossing @ around 9secs?
besides that, sweet effect
Thanks for always helping us out. We seriously owe you alot of money…
Paulo, besides the light saber preset which presets do not work for you in cs5?
I can’t load any of the presets into cs5. I’m not extremely tech-savvy but I can’t figure it out.
btw, all this help is amazing. Thanks for providing all this!
not at all what I expected when I saw “Orbit FX” but still very useful
Thanks Andrew
It’s simple and cool effect overall. I bet A.K just spent a coffee break to get this done. Lol.. or maybe sooner?
You should let me be your apprentice!?
Cool vid but I have a question… You talked about quick matte a while ago..I wanted to know if you were going to release it..
Good Job Andrew I Like It
hey andrew…Optical Flares plugin work in after effecr CS5 ???..I Have somme problem with this plugin in my AE5
tkx …you are the best !
When I was reading the description I was expecting a 3-5 animation.
thanks(Anrew).u helped me to create commercial tesar in Iran.
Looks and sounds like a menu screen for a Wii game… a really “G” Wii game, something addictive!
Hey, Andrew, its aweseom:D
Nice effect, and interesting music choice, haha
Andrew! Have you seen the new ad on the Youtube home page? hehe
Really Nice.
You Rock.
Matt, you talking about the samsung one? It’s funny because I’d say that about 2% of all the motion gfx that I see these days are straight up VC tutorials. This is especially prevalent in movie theaters. Like that 20 minute highlight video that they play before the trailers. Like half of those companies need to be paying straight royalties to VC.
It’s kind of sad to see a company like Samsung do it though. Don’t they have like an eleventy kadillion dollar marketing budget? They should just cut out the middle man at that point.
Wow, imagine combining this with Sure Target and Optical Flares
That’s right! In my country almost 60% looks like VC. That’s very sad!!! VC is Great and it’s very useful to lern and go beyond…
Just see, learn and go ahead, DO NOT COPY!!!
Andrew, you are the Master!!!
Thanks a lot!!!
Very educational!
very cool icon fx! I’ll try! But something interactive will be excellent. Maybe using Flash. But actioscript for me is “pure matematic” XD. Another program to learn!
Very cool… might need some Z-Sorting tweaking, but at full speed, you can’t really see anything.
@Matthew and @Gene
I totally agree, you should see some of the TV promos/commercials over here in the UK – straight out of VC.net!
Sometimes people leave such odd comments. Imagine all the various applications of this technique.
@Gene I’d also revise that 2% estimate up a bit
Awesome stuff.
That’s Nice,It’s very Gooooood Work.
If you can Andrew Please Make tutorial About Scary thing like (Saw VI)if you see,it’s scary Movie you Now.
Thanks Andrew and all People now YOU ARE BEST IN THE WORLD.

PLEASEEEEEEEEEE!!!
PLEASE FRIEND
COME ON!!! YES??? OHH COME ON!!! JEJE
Very neat! Knowing this might come in handy later on, is it possible to be like a quick-tut or something? On the other hand if you make it a tutorial, it will lose it’s magic. I might just try to do it myself, with a little help from the Awsum-O tutorial. Thanks Andrew, you always know how to make my day. Is there by any chance a new Payment plan short movie developing? I’d still want Sam’s autograph for his role there, hilarious. Nice to see the RED in it’s true glory. Wished we had one in school aswell.. im brabbling on to much, need to get back to work, my film isn’t going to edit itself. Have a great day!
hey Andrew you should make a tutorial on this it looks really cool
I’m not really liking the black border to the icons, but nothing a little mask can’t handle. Interesting use of the preset!
Kramer, DO NOT make a tutorial for this! If you do, Shatner will eat our sun!
why are you a monster like this
??
Make tutorial about taking day off, then send to my boss….
Really nice Andrew!
I see that you too have problems with bandig artifacts..
…I’d like a mini-tutorial to see your process on this one. Some VERY snazzy moves!
Yet another cool stuff!
Thanks AK for sharing and inspiring..

Alex
I like the sounds of that!
Cool stuff AK
That was so cool!
Very cool. This would be especially cool with 3D objects, as they would not have to be oriented to the camera. Great job Andrew.
hey andrew!! this is awesome but just one thing…where did u get the sound fx from??
Kinda Hot, ‘Drew
While the text explanation was a bit confusing, the final outcome looks great! The 3D Orbit tool is a wonderful thing!
Hey what the hell is this…
I want guns, explosions and stuff that I have no need of but love learning about…
This may actually be useful for the corporate video production day job I’ve found myself in for the past 5 years. I don’t visit videocopilot for usefulness I visit it to waste time..
show muito bom esses efeitos ai.. vão postar o tutorial ensinando fazer isso ai ????
Hi, Andrew! Very Very Beautiful Video
I’ve a question, could you tell please how did you create “TV-Off” effect, which is in the end of the video. Thanks.

AWESOME WORK ANDREW!
[...] working through a test project yesterday using the 3D orbit Preset, one of the things I noticed is how slow the expressions made my relatively simple comp. [...]
As always … Dominating Graphics
Hoping for a tutorial
Amazing as always….future tut perhaps…hint hint hint
Hey Lord Andrew Kramer, check this amazing video (lol) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_3RCofj5wc great effects don´t you think? or the rooster actually do that?
Ehh…
Shatner -> Earth -> Sun -> Shatner.
I’m sensing a Parent loop. This could lead to some wonky transformations of our solar system if anything is accidentally scaled or translated.
Seriously, though. This is a cool technique. Time to experiment!
was burnt out on a corporate I am working on….this got me over the line….love the music;-)
Hey Andrew, It looks very good, are you going to do a tutorial? If not, would you at least make the project available, I would like to learn more about movement in AE
Thanks
I agree I don’t think a tut is necessary but the project file would be interesting to look at.
Wonderful effects, btw.
Dude, how long have you been doing this stuff? You’re awesome. Have you done any work for any movies? Where’s your about page? What’s going on, why are you so good at this?
Reminds me of this:

Excuse me Mr.Kramer you’re missing an end parentheses right after “William Shatner.” just wanted to point that out. I’m putting my red pen away now. Great demo though.
nice work. i’m curious how you did some of the formations. would you post the project files?
Very Very Nice Work.. Good creativity
I would love to see a tutorial on this, it looks great!
Oh I forgot, did you make that music? I want to learn how you did the music, please tell us!
You always make everything look so easy:) does anyone know how to he made multiple moons around the earth? evenly spaced
Please publish the project file. I’ve been working on this for several days and feel I’m close… so close. Still having problems getting some of the expressions correct so everything rotates as expected.
Getting to take a peak at how you did this would be a huge help. Thanks!
Two words Pal……YOU ROCKKKKKKKKKKKK!!
Maybe it’s not easy for me to figure out how to compose that…..man, you gotta put a full detailed tutorial on this one. Cause I’m not that good with expressions

Plz..make a tutorial about this…..plzzzzzzzz

I agree with the posts about, we really need a tutorial on this. It is totally great and I think just a basic quick lesson would do.

very nice!!!
and i have to agree to some of the other comments; a little tutorial would be sweet
can’t figure it out completely
keep up the amazing and inspiring work!!
You’re the best Andrew you know
There is one interesting fact I’d like to point yout-
when you’re playing, your work looks better than mine even when I’m trying hard.. damned
I think this particular piece of work is undervalued. This demonstrates a lot of exciting potential for displaying static material. As a lot of work these days with AE revolves around showcasing screen grabs, icons, websites, mobile apps etc. In my opinion a tutorial for this video would be a HIGHLY valuable resource – and would ultimately make my job a lot more fun. I have tried many times to imitate this but with the brief instructions mentioned in the caption and a moderate understanding of expressions, I fail every time. I know it’s more of a freeloader mindset, but even making the aep available would be a big help to understand how to create something like this.
Anyhow, great work!
Cheers!
