Cool Sci-Fi Short Film

You know what I like more than a Sci-Fi short film?

One that uses Optical Flares & Action Essentials 2! Well, now that I have exploited the filmmakers to plug some of our sweet products, I WOULD like to say that this short, not only has some great effects and visuals but it also zings some of my favorite movies.

I really liked the locations and atmosphere of the futuristic world. You can really see the hard work and passion that went into this, plus they pulled it off for only 5K bucks. And now I’m sharing it with everyone here on Video Copilot!

We should all go out and make cool films!

You MUST show us how they did some of that! I would be so thankful. This is the kind of movie I have been wanting to create since I got into editing and such. THanks for sharing though. You never seem to dissappoint.

Yes it was shot on RED. Nice effects, but no real story here, or at least no story that hasn't been already seen a thousand times. The pacing of the whole thing is quite weak too. But it has a nice look to it.

We all should go out and make movies. Speaking of: where int eh world is the Action Essentials 2 mini-movie?! We'll understand if it got scrapped for other projects, but I was really looking forward to seeing what you can do (outside of the tutorials and whatnot). You posted some pretty snazzy still a while back, and I think one of the shots might have been used for the Optical Flares tutorials?

I watched it..it is very nice

but was the optical flare a preset or custom one that they made it?
April 27th, 2010 @ 12:46 am
i've seen the Freeze time and this and that has shocked me :D I'm working since yesterday on almost the same project but not with cyber cops xD it would be great to make a turoial to matchmovie to robot (at the end) that seen so realistic and i don't know how to do this. Thanks for your help ;)
April 27th, 2010 @ 1:15 am
I thought it was shot superbly. It was cinematic enough to be professional but stylized enough to be beautiful. I personally thought the CGI brought it down and showed it had a low budget. A little more time animating and compositing the elements would have solved this. Overall a fantastic watch.

Hey! I recognized VIDEOCOPILOT products in this short this morning! (well actually in many works around the world, even tv spots here in México)

Really nice video! And thanks Andrew for posting! We know you are in your path for becoming a god and ultimately you'll send someone to post for you (maybe you already do that XD ) The amount of time between your last post and this one is a sign of your ascension!Every time lasting more and more. We'll learn as much as we can while you are a semi god and you still talk to us!

Here's some of the stuff that they do (under the "Effects" menu on this website....) = http://www.bigfreeze.com/

This all is very inspiring ;).

Hey, that's a nice one! Good color grading and effects. The actor also pulls off a good, convincing character. I like the resemblance to district 9 and the OF really add to the atmosphere. The only thing I don't like are the robocop mechs. The animation is a bit off and unsmooth as well as the materials and details. But however.. .that's one nice SciFi Short!!

That's no amateur. Ricardo de Montreuil is the director of "La mujer de mi hermano" and "Máncora" (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1662693/). Nevertheless, I agree that it's a pretty cool exercise in action and sci-fi. I also think that the flares are a bit overused but if J.J. Abrams can do it for Star Trek then what the heck.

The Optical Flares is the only thing that is great in this film. )) The film without the idea is just a "shiny video with a lot of flares"...
April 27th, 2010 @ 1:12 pm
i like it a lot but do you know what kind of video camera they use?
April 27th, 2010 @ 1:13 pm

Pretty slick overall, and I liked most of the shots. CG was a bit touchy- the bug was good, the flying things not so good.

I agree with those who criticize the 'story'... if he is telekinetic, why doesn't he just press the "off" buttons on the machines? I mean he can pick up a car? Couldn't he just knock the robots over?

And how can you claim to make a movie for 5k using a camera that costs $17k?... or am I missing something? Do budgets not include gear? Or can you rent those cameras?

Don't get me wrong tho, its a please to watch for what it is :)
April 27th, 2010 @ 2:49 pm
Yeah! I agree with you! The story is a little lame, also the budget they claim they used is not accurate! All the equipment needs to be in the budget, maybe they rented the cameras but I really don't think so. Anyway, the overall video is great and really inspired me! The AFTER EFFECTS are great even when the 3D renders are lame also (and some explosions) But hey! Maybe they are new at it! Wich would give them lots of credit!

It is my belief that many things magical or mythological can and may eventually be explained scientifically. With a story this short it is indeed hard to fill in any possibly holes or unexplained reasonings within the plot.

However, I think these filmmakers did a spectacular job making many things evident that some may not pick up on. The objects he managed to influence were solidly made out of metal. Trash cans and cars. His telekinesis may be very well rooted in the manipulation of magnetism. Especially his last outburst caused arking sparks and visible electrical fields. I am gathering he emitted an electromagnetic burst.

Now for those saying "why did he not simply turn off the machines" they may be made out of special alloys or have special shielding to prevent the manipulation of magnetism on them. Obviously they are chasing him for a reason and they seem to be technologically advanced.

Story wise that may be the conclusion I draw, but from a filmmakers perspective making enemies easy to defeat at first sight is boring. It hardly lends to the purpose of this short film which seems to be a chase. Ramping up towards the last burst of energy and escape.

Overall looks great. I really want to get that Optical Flares, seems like a powerful little piece of software. Great job.

Love the cinematography. And parkour! Don't get why they owned the homeless guy, but not the raven dude. Lack of story hurt me real deep(you make special effects for a movie, not a movie for effects. Still it was good, and inspirational.
April 27th, 2010 @ 5:33 pm
Zen: On the vimeo page it says they used the RED camera

Yeah I hear what you're saying MatM, I was just nick-picking really. But I can't help myself.

The film makers didn't actually make any clear statement about the Raven's powers... or even give subtle clues. You're just assuming he can only effect magnetic objects (what about the rocks at the end??).. Its just sloppy story telling. We can make up any magical explanations (a sooper-secret anti-mutant shield), but unless they SHOW it, its just special pleading and post-hoc rationalization. And it would be simple enough to clue us in in 5 seconds: include that in the bad guy chatter ("engage sooper-secret invisible shield to stop electromagnetic magic... roger.")..

Or here's a thought: make a cogent universe. How would you actually stop someone with these powers? That should generate the story, not the other way around. Not, "I want these flying things and robots and magic powers... what excuses can I make to put them all together?" Starting from a logical premise and sticking to it will always produce a better story. And it makes it so much more interesting and unique.

sorry to spew, I'm being really picky, but that's what I love about scifi. I still enjoyed watching it, I promise!
April 27th, 2010 @ 7:35 pm
Had nothing to do so I made a subtitle for "THE RAVEN" :p

Hard to hear what the "robots" are saying so don't flame me if I got anything wrong :)

The explanation is not magical, unless you consider science magic. In which case i'm a witch and After Effects it the devil, so break out the goose and cross.

Enhanced brain function and the ability to control his own magnetic/electric field may allow for the ability to manipulate the magnetic properties in other materials, such as the garbage can or the car. At the end the levitation of the rocks could be caused by the large discharge of energy as evidenced by the sign arcing an the sparks on the machine itself. Yes i said could, and i used the word may. Alot of science is theory, which is great stomping grounds for science fiction.

(btw objects can be levitated by magnetic fields. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_levitation)

I mean if your really saying start from a logical premise and sticking to it produces better story. What isn't logical about manipulation of his body's electrical current and magnetic fields. I mean this is science fiction?

Watch Fringe and tell me everything there when explained doesn't sound logical or within a possible realm probability. (awsome intros by Andrew Kramer btw) And even if its not you cant say its not interesting, unique, and entertaining.

I mean most things in science fiction is hardly logical. Theres an all encompassing energy field that embodies all living things that on specific people can manipulate and do amazing things with such as heal the sick, slow down time, move objects and swing swords that cut through anything.

Creativity and the ability to believe in what isn't, but could be, is what drives sci fi. A earnest belief in things beyond what this world and a hope for what is to come is what sci fi is made out of.

Sure this is pretty much a showing of skill in After Effects. Which btw is considerable and the use of the Optical Flares plugin is exceptional. Don't knock it as a bad story, or lack thereof. To me the story was there, it served its purpose. I think it explained a lot in a short amount of time.

If you didn't get that well, maybe I watch too much scifi, to me this all came right away. Then again I don't discount that anything is possible.

Long winded but i guess i'm not picky. I would assume though to watch scifi you need an open mind. Maybe mine is just more open than most.

Nice effects and great colour correction.
Two things I noticed though... 1) spelling mistakes in the work "SCANNING" in the police viewport (two comps) - was spelt "SCANING".

and 2) if the Raven had such cool powers, why didn't he freaking used his levitation power to move the mini robot sentinel in the first scenes? He sure can as hell move that beemer!!! :-)

But very good "District 9"-ish movie! ;-)

I saw this and i was amazed. Except, the acting of the driver and the homeless man, not to mention the ending, screwed it up for me. All in all though, amazing short flick!

My Alternate Ending: He get's caught, is asked what he's name is and such. When he's in his cell or where ever they lock him up, he hears the security guards being killed. It's a girl, she has the same extraordinary ability as him. They escape. Left with a possibility of a sequel.

Something like that, not really good at explaining things. xP

This was shot on a RED ONE with Arri Ultra Prime lenses with a budget of about $5K and the only reason it is getting any attention is because it "visually" looks amazing. The cinematography, sound, and VFX are top notch. I applaud everyone involved for all their hard work. Now should this have caught the eye of the Studios? Prob. not since the story itself is very unoriginal and the look and sound isn't anything Studios can't already achieve. I'm not knocking the talent behind this project but there are hundreds of great scripts out there that deserve to get produced. We can't all have CO3 do our color grading and ask the production crew to NOT GET PAID. lol.

Just finished watching this now, and have to say that I think for the budget they had this short is fantastic. Myself and some mates made a short film a year or so back and had some grand ideas about what we could do in terms of CGI and compositing but it all fell flat for lack of funds, so big ups to these guys; great job! thanks once again, Andrew for the inspiration.

awesome! I really wanna learn film making techniques and master softwares like After Effects to try to do things like that, that inspired me...but when I saw `5k bucks`, oh my god!! o.O.....how can you spend 5k bucks on that, I`m not criticizing, I just can`t understand, I don`t have that much money to invest in film making, so that means I will never be able to do something like that?

awesome, is it just me being a nerd or do those smaller police drones at the beginning remind you of the ships from the starfox video game

The story is poor, typical sci fi fugitive. But the execution is good. Your Action Essentials 2 rocks Andrew. Some of the effects they use are ald taught in some of ur tutorials! :D

Looks great, the story, dialogue, and acting were kinda gay and corny. But I don't see how it cost $5000 to make the film? All of the special FX were digital? Give it some time and you could probably shoot the same thing for free.

That was a GREAT short! I really enjoyed watching that. There was one part where The Raven was running and the shot switched to a close up of his feet as he ran. I would really like to know how this shot is performed. Does a cam on a dolly just follow him as he runs?
