Great news Andrew. I've been looking forward to the release since it was first teased last year. I have several projects that I plan to revisit and update as well as a couple new ones on my schedule that will benefit from OF.

The demo video also is excellent. It helps to give ideas about how to use it in non traditional manners, you know, thinking outside of the optical box.

Andrew You should autograph and number each copy of 3d flares!
to make this great plug in even more meaningful.

The Pro Presets utilize more dynamic triggering and offer more variety to the presets that come with the plug-in.

Dude, after watching the demo reel your REALLY understating how MASSIVE this plugin is. Not only is this the new standard Im positive the VideoCoPilot plugins will become the complete standard in video editing. Because of you I can't watch tv anymore, I watch for things like tracking points, where particles are used, etc. Thank you guys SO MUCH for granting us the tools and tutorials to make professional looking vids.
January 19th, 2010 @ 11:53 am
Oh, oh, oh, oh, I can't breath, I want the plugin SOOOOOOO badly. Great work Videocopilot! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
January 19th, 2010 @ 11:54 am
Too bad it's only a download, I love box art!
January 19th, 2010 @ 11:55 am
WOW!

You really haven't missed a trick with this one!

I used to work as a lighting designer, so enjoy incorporating light effects in my motion graphics work, and Optical Flares has just given me an exciting new toolbox to achieve that.

The only trouble is, it's going to take an awful lot of restraint not to use Optical Flares on every project now!!!

This really has set a new standard for AE plugins - I hope other developers aspire to create plugins of this quality.

Looking forward to purchasing and using Optical Flares!

Phil

Ha, nuts by the title of the post I was suddenly under the impression that you'd somehow created a version of the plugin that works online, through my browser :)

Congrats again though!

January 19th, 2010 @ 12:02 pm
Hey Comic Book guy... we actually have an online version of it. We are going to launch the preset network soon and it actually allows you to upload the preset files and it generates the image thumbnails on the server automatically.

to take the autographing system even further you can make it show on top of the optical flares interface.this will help you track authentic copies of Optical Flares as well this may discourage the use of pirate copies..

But mostly my idea is to have something to remember in the future. when you became all famous and unreachable.lol

Make a scrip so each copy gets an Autograph and a copy number.

The 25th is going to be a sad day for the less-featured $400.00 Knoll Light Factory. You guys have outdone yourselves again; I can't wait to try it.

Now that we have more flexibility, I can definitely see a comeback from the cheesy flares of the past.

Then again, you may have just opened a pandoras box of great glowy goodness.

I did not see anything about the community website on there. I remember you said you where working on a web page where people can upload and share presets and the likes. I think that is a crucial element. Thats what im stuck on right now. Because i have Light factory already, the one reason why I would switch would be for the greater community support.

I really do hope it gets implemented. :]

No,

I hope your proud of yourself - you should be. What an incredible accomplishment. I enjoyed watching your videos on the product page. This looks like a fantastic achievement.

Thanks for pricing it affordably. I'll try to reward that by scraping my pennies together to purchase it.

After going through pt1 of your 2 part video, I am in awe at the features this includes as it greatly exceeds what I had expected. Lens grundge textures, chromatic aberration, lens flare flicker, custom textures, matte box...this product is ridiculously under-priced for the value you deliver. The interface is well thought out; minimizing clicks, cut and paste, live preview box. You have raised the bar for what a plug-in should do for any program.

Please let the community know when J.J. Abrams purchases a network license for Star Trek 2.0 ;)
January 19th, 2010 @ 2:03 pm
Didn't even make it through all the videos, before I had to stop and say "Oh. My. God." This is phenomenal and one of the most well thought-out and executed editing/vfx programs I've ever seen. You guys are rock stars.
January 19th, 2010 @ 1:12 pm
i was happy to use normal flares thinking: ah this is the life!
Then i watched this. I had to go hospital it blew my mind! You sir are a genius...

Absolutely beautiful stuff. You guys clearly put in a lot of work and created an amazing product. I know it's premature seeing as how it's not even available for purchase yet, but is there any chance you'd make an ofx version of O.F.? I'd definately pay a lot more than 125 dollars for it.

@ Andrew Kramer

Thats awesome, glad thats still getting made. One more question though. Who design the interface and icons? Its very well made and pretty slick.
January 19th, 2010 @ 5:15 pm
You have truely taken the use of lense flares to a higher level. This product does not only create lense flares but any light simulation one can think of. The preset exchange network is a great initiative because it encourages VC fans like myself to contribute (idea for the concept name: Lens Shares). I also think it'll increase the amount of hoax UFO video's on youtube but that's another story..hehe
To everyone that reads this, let's all buy Lens Flares when it comes out and support our mentor Andrew Kramer as a token of our appreciation for his effort, skills and generousity of sharing.
Thank you Andrew

Well ...I'm all for optical flare now.. Knoll light I use all the time. But time will tell whether your plugin is easier/intuitive/feature rich.

Great job !

On top of that, the way that you are rolling out this product is top notch !! Over at Red Giant .. there website need some color, and there knoll light 3d product page is way to dull.

It's as if the are releasing knoll light 3d as a response to you (see thee defensiveness in there KL 3D video)

Great job to you and you team of developers, they also need to be mentioned !!!

p.s: I would like to see a video in your video blog discussing with your team, what you where looking for in a flare plugin what kinds of things did you study (real world lighting) etc.... thanks.

Sorry But I had to post again...

"ON LENS SIMULATION ..sweet,sweet,sweet."

This is the kind thinking only a user and hardcore Visual effects artist would come up with.

I was not expecting something like that, it surprised the hell out of me.

I thought to my self "Of course", things don't always have to look so clean, why didn't anyone ever think of that!! Great job again, to you and your team.

January 19th, 2010 @ 6:15 pm
Very nice product. And it looks like you've done some pretty innovative things with it...

I'm hoping you'll have an introductory price under $100. Anything more than that and I have to file a ton of paperwork justifying to the suits why I would need it. However, I have a $100 per project discretionary fund where I can get whatever I need (and I've used it in the past to buy others of your products).

I know your price is more than reasonable for such a product, but given the times... You might want to consider that not everyone makes the kind of money you do. :)
January 19th, 2010 @ 6:35 pm
That looks like a brilliant piece of software.

Have you thought about making a version for photoshop?

I have no idea what is involved and I know its not your target audience .. but if its not a massive undertaking then you might be able to sell quite a few .. people might just pick up an AE / PS bundle.

One small, tiny question. In the Shimmer Animation feature video, how did you create the 3D text? It looks very different to how your tutorial results in.

But anyway, can wait to get this! It must be the 60s all over again, we have Star Trek and flares!

Oh yeah, thanks for putting such a reasonable price on your products Andrew. That is the main reason i buy everything from here....great quality, at prices that fit my budget....THANKS!

January 20th, 2010 @ 10:40 am
I'm always bummed at how low you price your stuff. I'd buy that for $800! Now any middle-schooler can save his lunch money for a week and we'll all be drowning in flares! Curse you, Kramer! Curse you!!!!! But all kidding aside, you've set a new standard for AE plug-ins and should charge more.

Hey nice thing again.... but i have Question. will it b work on FCP ?
January 20th, 2010 @ 11:19 am
Can't wait to give it a try, that'll teach Knoll to be 2D only.
January 20th, 2010 @ 11:22 am
As for Final Cut Pro:
At the moment Optical Flares uses many advanced functions only related to After Effects and are not available in other host applications. We are investigating a version for these platforms and we'll let you know!

Optical Flares 2.0:
If every core element property was keyframeable (I know it's not really the point, but could be useful) this plugin would be unstoppable!!

The more I see, the more I see potential! Amazing!

As usual Im in !
Great work VCP, I have been holding off on other flaress for this one.

A question : Will it have an automatic "edge flare up" capability, or is that something we would have to keyframe ourselves?

January 20th, 2010 @ 12:39 pm
Simply amazing! I am blown away by the many features, options and the general quality of this plug-in.
I can't wait to purchase and use it!

Hopefully Knoll won't start sending you any threat messages because this will become the number one lens-flare plugin for a very very long time!

Great work!
January 20th, 2010 @ 1:04 pm
Hey Ron, check out this demo video:

Hey, Andrew,

Incredible!

You can really tell that you studied lights and lens flares to output Optical Flares.

Me?... Not so studious! One concern I have is creating "stooopid" lens flares because I'm not a student of what they look like in the real world.

In the package do any of the tutorials teach lens flares and how they look, so a dumb ass like me can make them look natural?

OR... would you or anybody else recommend sites that I could go to to get a bit more studious?
January 20th, 2010 @ 1:27 pm
I know nothing about programming, so if this suggestion sounds dumb, ignore me, but if there was a way to port Optical Flares over to Nuke and Fusion, as well as After Effects, I think you could really rule the market for flares in the VFX world, Andrew.

You´re the man! You´re a genious! You just have changed the whole indy DP look with your plugin!!! You´ll see!

I wonder... What´s gonna become of poor Michael Bay now that we all can achieve his look and create his explosions (AE2)? Will he have to turn to 3d? Will Andrew give us some 5d plugin then?

Seriously, Andrew. I owe you too much. I proudly included you in my last feature´s credits (special thanks to my "masters") along with Scorsese and Robert Rodriguez. I´ve bought your products before but this is the most exciting of all... THANX (from Seville, Spain)

I liked to have animation control like rotating the stripe itself without rotating the whole lens flare(how I want and not using the triggering function) ..but its not a problem because it won't look realistic. Anyways, the plug-in is the most powerful plug-in I've ever seen.

Dear Andrew,I´ve just watched all your optical flare videos, and am blown away by the possibilities of optical flares. You saved the world from death by the dreaded photoshopflaremonster. I really think that your plugin is to after effects, what avatar is for cinema. But the greatest thing is to see cool lens flares in star trek thinking: man, i would love to have those flares, and then really and truly getting them!!! If adobe sees that, i bet they will give you gadzillions of dollars, just to have your plugin in their next release. Don´t sell it until you´ve earned alot of money with it. Thank you for this beautiful piece of art plugin.

Can't wait on getting my hands on this :)

And I'm getting brain orgasm when thinking about particular alternative created by VCP with UI like this, and friendly price, whereby VCP is famous .... what do you think Andrew? :)

I know that particular is good, but seeing Optical Flares in action, there is no question that alternative from you would be better, and cheaper! (plus maybe some special VCP crossplugin features)

Mr. Kramer, that would be pure awesomeness!
Adam
January 20th, 2010 @ 8:09 pm
I agree with Eric. I'd really love to be able to keyframe the individual object settings. Like Random Seed, etc. Similar to what Knoll allows. I'd like to use it to create abstract effects not only realistic flares only. Not to diminish the amount of work and brilliance (literally) that went into this! I'm counting down the days.

Hey Andrew,
I am interested in your new product and have took a look at the features and demo videos you posted. There is one question that I must ask and I believe it is in the minds of many other AE Users.
"What is the difference between Red Giant's Knoll Light Factory and VC's Optimal Lens Flare? Are there something that one product can do while the other can't?"
Thanks,

I have posted other comments about OF in several other sections and I still have to say this is something that is beyond awesome. I watched all the videos on the features and love every bit of it.
I was wondering though, is there any way to place your own "TRIGGER AREA"? after I watched that section I thought it might be nice to put a circle or square in the shape and size you want, for example if there is a crystal ball in your shot that you want the flare to interact with you could place a trigger over the crystal and get a really nice effect but I guess then you would have to figure out a way to motion track the "Trigger area" as your shot moves.
before I get yelled at by the masses, this isn't something I am complaining about. Just a feature I thought of spur of the moment when I watch the videos.
