Yeah, 18 min is a bit long… Kind of hard to squeeze in during lunch at work :/

But hey, it is still worth sitting through the rambling to pick up a jem every now and then ;)

Thanks!

I think this video really demonstrates the value of the Optical Flares plug in. At $140 I was a little skeptical but after seeing that interface, it blows Knoll Light Factory out of the water! KLF looks like a piece of crap compared to your interface. Not to mention I see many many more customization features. Can’t wait to buy it!

One of the best plug-ins I have ever seen, with a very low price. Making a promo like the AccionEssentialsPromo would be a piece of cake with OLV. Good job on the interface too!

Plugin looks great, and thanks for the quick tip on cloning and that I really like the “bite size” tips.

Optical Flares looks great, I knoll light factory though so I am not sure if that would be flare overkill.

But I love the look of the interface and feel of it all. you guys make great products.

Absolutely stunning! I am very impressed. I used to use FX Home Visionlab Studios which allowed you to create semi-realistic optic flares of your own, but this is far beyond that and definitely worth the money. Fantastic guys!

Nice fight tutorial too.

Jesus H. Christ will will you guys keep it down, the guys over at Red Giant are going to catch wind of this and be quite Sad that Andrew Kramer the tutorial guy just made a plug-in thats better than theirs. LOL

JK i still use KLF, but i might just buy this because the lens flares look much cooler.

October 15th, 2009 @ 12:07 pm

Will Optical Flares also be available for mac?

October 15th, 2009 @ 12:11 pm

Coca-Cola… hehe ;-) wow, that plugin… cant wait to see more of it! Thank you for this cool vid.!

October 15th, 2009 @ 12:11 pm

Hey Andrew!

This new videoblog is much better in sd-resolution!

Have to say that the bear joke wasn’t that funny. It is also nice to notice that you edit out most of those random mumblings.

But anyway. UI of that optical flare -plugin looked brilliant. I was really astonished! Let me say, this product is going to be real hit! It shows up amazing programming skills that you guys have. It is ingenious how someone can make the most used effect of the 90′s look still interesting and cool!

Have you code some of it by your self or do you have some specialist for that job? How much of the interface has your own design? Did you create the layout, buttons and all that and then someone then coded it? or how was it done?

What a preview! Can’t wait the final product!

Good job!

October 15th, 2009 @ 12:17 pm

Slickness. I was going to make my own lens flair from the “Lens Flaire 2000″ kit they sell at CostCo. But you need a really long extension cord, and you have to be there in person to turn the light on in the background, and move around the room holding the lamp, as every client views the effect. So on the one hand it is cheap, but then you gotta figure in your time and the extension cord. I gotta say this is way a head of the “Lens Flaire 2000″ When would I be able to get me some o this?

wow wow… What a difference from the last blogs, this one makes sense to me. Thanks for structuring the whole thing so it feels professional! Timewise i think you made the right choice, blog/show. And 18 minutes felt good also. Anyway It all felt right.

And the lens flare plugin is the bomb. Can’t wait to mess around with that. Quick question, will there be a demo version?

October 15th, 2009 @ 12:30 pm

Best episode so far! The plug-in looks AWESOME! The interface looks slick, fancy and above all EASY TO USE, with presets with gigantic image’s so you dont have to click and see what they look like, you’ll instantly see how they look! VERY NICE and the fancy animations, it’s nice, but maybe on REALLY BIG projects you might want to add a turn off switch for them so it goes a bit faster ;)

love the interface andrew, i konw how difficult it is to get an oparational interface for anythig that actuly works,
i have always tryed to avoid lens flares , but this is very interesting.. i realy do think its time to try and better ‘your friend and mine plug in’ ,,,, Particular, i dont know if this would be posable, but it would rather neat.

October 15th, 2009 @ 1:32 pm

Really Amazing. That little snipit on the fight sequence piece will really help sell a few shots from the movie I’ve been working on for 3 years. Cheers Andrew! Thanks!

October 15th, 2009 @ 1:34 pm

Seriously, seriously great plugin!

One thing I was wondering, how are you going about ‘making’ those flares in the first place? Did you start by building a collection of flares from the ground-up inside of aftereffects using coloured solids and feathered masks? Or is it all handled ‘in code’?

Freak
October 15th, 2009 @ 1:36 pm

October 15th, 2009 @ 5:35 pm

Haha, my wife dropped our baby when she saw the Pepsi :) not really but a very great show today, I think this was much needed after a lot of criticism due to the last post on optical flares in which I regress my last post, I know that I am coming around after seeing what optical flares can do and how professional of a job you are doing on the user interface as well as the end product. In the end if you can sell people on how great it is I don’t see my boss not approving purchases such as these. Okay I am rambling too now, good show!

So, are you adopting that new iFrame format now? I was kinda disapointed to see yet another format pop up BUT if you say it’s worthwhile, then it is. Just curious to have your views on it.

Nice work AK,

Nic.

How about calling the video show the Video Copilot “Mission Briefing”, to stay in theme with the whole “copilot” thing? Just an idea.

Thanks for all you add to the community!

Great episode! I like that it’s a little bit of everything quick tips, mini tutorials, updates, rambling. I don’t mind the length(that means more content!)
Thank you so much Andrew and Staff for creating such a great website for us. Along with the full length tutorials, great products and the other miscellaneous things on the blog, this site has become THE go to place for After Effects users. You have taught me so much in the 30+ tutorials I’ve watched here and I am very appreciative. Keep up the good work.

Crap Kramer, I really wasn’t planning on spending $140 dollars on a new preset, but you make it impossible not too. That interface was ridiculous, and now I totally see now how your practically giving it away for that price. Unfortunatly I will be buying it:)

Andrew i think you and your team made the first lens flare plug in where you can make a ”matte” for lens flares to realistic hide behind objects. a flare will also become smaller when its behind a human or an object. and from what i know no plug does this.
i was afraid that this one wouldnt have this. so it was a big suprise. i think you and you r team worked so hard on this that you have no idea how good it looks. i am serious here.

i used the lens flares from sapphire. but they dont have the ”foreground” function.

I had a feeling your sarcastic humor would be lost on the world audience…but I get it! That’s because we are a bunch of smart arses on this side of the coast (East). lol Coke sponser….Pepsi product…you are too funny! The video blog is going well. That plug-in looks very professional, wow you have been busy!

Would be cool if you could make some punch sound FX!

Mby Action Sound FX could make a nice product ;)

October 16th, 2009 @ 7:14 am

I was wondering about the mic and the “pop” filter. So I check on B&H and I found some similar looking hardware. The mic is a Neumann and the “pop” filter is “Blue The pop” filter.

Here the links:
Mic: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/598254-REG/Neumann_TLM_103_D_TLM_103D_Digital_Large_Diaphragm.html

@Andrew, is it right?

Awesome work!!!
Hope the lens effects interface is working on mac too

October 16th, 2009 @ 7:52 am

i have a question…

After watching the video in this post, I noticed that the “pop out” window was a Windows version (since you work primarily in Windows).

I would assume it does, but does the “Options” tab with the interface also work for Macs as well?

Thanks!

Stephen

October 16th, 2009 @ 8:02 am

Optical Flares—Kudos! Giving us an interface like this really shows forward thinking and I’m thinking this will set a new standard for creating plug-ins for AE.

Keep it up man!
