I asked several big AE plugin producers and surprisingly they are neither aware of the 64bit problem nor want to care about that before CS5 is released.
That means there will be several months where we either get fast rewritten and recompiled crap or simply no update for our plugins.
Even worse all companies noticed that there will be NO
free upgrade to 64bit plugins

Don't even GO there about Adobe and W7

They quietly omitted to mention that they had completely blanked XP64, so if you are running that, you're screwed. Vista is the pile of dog-poo we all know and despise, and now, having built my 8-core mother of PCs, I now discover that out of the 20+ applications in the Adobe master collection I paid an arm and a leg for, Photoshop 64 and Acrobat are the only ones that work.

Don't believe the crap that Adobe spiel out, most other companies like Avid have been running 64 bit apps for months, if not years, and now Adobe have the sheer and utter GALL to announce this!!???

I want my damn money back!!

I was pretty excited when I saw the 64 bit news, but became concerned when a comment by Michael Coleman in the blog was pointed out to me, stating: "...32-bit plug-ins will not run in the next version of After Effects. -- MC]"

Obviously this won't be too much of a hurdle for video copilot and other companies keeping up with their plug-in releases. It is however an issue for those of us that still use and value other older, unsupported plug-ins. Some of the plug-ins we like to keep around just won't be usable anymore. I can think of a couple that aren't exactly supported anymore, including pete's plugins and aeflame. Thanks for the re-assurance that you guys won't be effected adversely Andrew!

This is from mac world Posted on Aug 20, 2009

If you’re running a Mac powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or an Intel Xeon processor, your Mac is 64-bit capable. And Snow Leopard runs 64-bit-capable applications in 64-bit mode regardless of whether it’s booting into a 64-bit or 32-bit kernel. In fact, the only big advantage of booting into a 64-bit kernel would be the ability to use more than 32 gigabytes of RAM. There aren't any Macs that can do that now, anyway, due to hardware limitations.

Applications running in Snow Leopard will have access to a full 16 exabyte virtual address space, just the same as if they were running in a 64-bit kernel. As a result, there’s very little difference between booting into the 64-bit kernel and the 32-bit kernel in current Mac systems. (This is not to say that there won't be a bigger difference in the future, as RAM sizes continue to grow. But presumably new high-end Mac systems will boot into the 64-bit kernel when the need arises.)

So, bottom line: If you’ve got a Core 2 Duo or Xeon based Mac — any Intel Mac not running a Core Duo or Core Solo processor — you’ll be able to run applications in 64-bit mode, which will in turn be able to take advantage of faster 64-bit registers and math routines as well as access massive amounts of memory.

Andrew,

I wouldn't be that shure. You are using Quicktime all the way, but there's not 64bit Quicktime out as I wrote before.

So if CS5 is 64bit only, there's no Quicktime for this!

Regards,
Lucas
