America is the place of uppertunity. everything is in America. Here in Belgium there is nothing, you cannot go after your dreams. The only thing this country offers young people is working in the factory. I want to be a 3d artist. but there are almost no schools for this in my country. In america there are so many schools. You can be anything you want. Its so depressing. Why do we exist? I guess to fulfill our dreams, but what if there is no chance?

Domenico, I’m sorry but I completely disagree.

Yes, schools are important. And being from Los Angeles myself, I probably take them for granted. However, I have never gone to an art school. I have found this to be true of some of the most talented people I know. If you have the passion for it, you will find a way no matter where you live. In fact people with that kind of passion and determination usually end up being the best in their field.

As far as no opportunities in Belgium, I find that a little curious. I have met many incredibly talented web designers from Belgium and all over Europe (via Twitter). In fact, one girl from Belgium has almost all American Fortune 500 clients.

I always keep in mind that our field is not like being a doctor or a lawyer. If I screw up a design, no one’s life will be ruined. Therefore, in my mind, a school degree is of questionable importance. The most important thing is what I learn everyday and for me, that has never been done in a school. Websites like Video Copilot that offer free tutorials are even better than what you could learn at a school (imho).

Well, anyway, sorry for “the world is what you make it” rant. That’s just the way I feel.

Yeah, it seems like this user group was a lot better when it was run by Trish and Chris Meyer. They really put a lot of work into it. I really miss the old MGLA days at LA Film School. It was a much better location too.

Hey I was wondering for future forums/presentation, if at all possible record them and just put it on site for viewing as a tut or as a RAR file people can dl to there cpu? That would be cool!

@domenico: I’ll admit that in some of the previous videocopilot tutorials I’ve groaned a bit at some of the jokes, but at the presentation he is genuinely personable. He made a few jokes that were cheeky (likening a falling refractive raindrop mask effect to a rejected “implant”).

There was also a great bit where someone asked about a RED Camera pipeline, saying he had heard it was nearly impossible to use anything but a “half million dollar computer.” Andrew corrected him saying it was actually more like a quarter million. Up to that point he had been typing several useful site links in his After Effects window, and without missing a bit he tells in a dramatic fashion what fancy hardware we need for a RED: F-I-R-E-W-I-R-E 4-0-0/8-0-0

or (drumroll): U-S-B

In the questioners defense he did seem pretty young. But yeah Andrew’s a great presenter.

As for opportunities in Europe vs. America, I’m kinda surprised. Maybe because I’m weirded out by positive things said about America. Seriously though, I can’t speak for Belgium but Western Europe should have great schools. I know in France Supinfocom is spoken highly of and not just as a French speaking school, and the UK should have some as well.

Good job. I drove from Elsinore (~1.5hours southeast of LA) to check it out. First time and it was worth it. Did you plant some of the guys with the (what’s the nice way to say this) less constructive questions? That was too funny. Definitely the best presentation of the night. Hey don’t let them give you crap because you use a PC sometimes. Oh and you should let everybody in on the secret new technology… i think you called it “firewire”. Now i dont have to spend half-a-milly on special hardware to convert my red footage. You saved my as-pirations man!

Thanks Andrew, and thanks to DMA LA for the forum, it was a great night. You know, minus the minor Tec glitches and Incompatibility issues you looked kind of at home on a MAC(we won’t tell). And I thought I was alone with the whole rename revised clips(HIT 111.22.!!!.??mov.) It was also nice to see that the humor runs real time. Keep up the great work.

You know what, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but at the end of the presentation Andrew turned the crowd against him. I’d rather not go into details as there is footage to corroborate, but it was BAD. I myself threw a tomato at him, which I often carry with me everywhere I go

So, Alan, next time, takes a few plants with you such as potatoes, lettuce and tomatoes, just in case something goes wrong.

3D renders in AE???what’s that???

If you have a 3D program. and you can open the file with Photoshop. Then save the Photoshop file. and open it with After Effects.

Per the projector issues, I have had some problems when presenting to clients occasionally. For me, turning down the resolution solved it.

Not sure if that was the actual problem, but it came to mind.

Otherwise, quite buying laptops from the future. The tax rate alone isn’t worth it.
