String Energy

Back to more AE experimenting… this string-like energy ball is created with standard plug-ins like vegas and polar coordinates. It works in 3D space and the depth of field is from the AE camera. I’m trying to work this in to something more useful and then I’d like to release a project file or maybe a short tutorial.

Sample Video in HD

Question: How do you like watching sample videos in HD? They have this new thing on the internet and thought I would try it out. The internet that is.

You know, if you flattened the Y axis a little, and added some more fog on the outter rim, this could look like a small galaxy. Looks cool Andrew.

July 7th, 2009 @ 4:28 am
Looks amazing and I agree with Rion, it could make a good galaxy. Also, if you shorten the "tenticles" it could maybe be a very cool energy ball or something for your very own "Heroes" episode :P
July 7th, 2009 @ 4:29 am
Nice! I agree with Rion. It would make a great galaxy.
Greg Noss
July 7th, 2009 @ 4:34 am
Make the strands a little more spastic and you could shoot it out of a gun to disable a transformer or something like that. With the depth of field maybe a quarter off camera following the energy ball to it's target. Looks very intriguing.

Honestly, I think you should embed a vimeo video for HD viewing. Personally I don't like having to wait for another window to open and load. Plus, I just played the sample you posted and it went full screen automatically with no player options. It looked great don't get me wrong, but I like to have some options when watching content.

If you're a PLUS member at vimeo, you have all sorts of privacy and HD embed options too, in case you were not wanting people to copy or use the video on other sites.

Just my thoughts :)

July 7th, 2009 @ 4:41 am
@Bones: just download the video and watch it in your normal player, only takes a second. watching it in vimeo would be no good for analysing it in detail, frame by frame, full quality etc. plus it would likely take much longer to post if it's anything like youtube having to wait for the processing etc.
July 7th, 2009 @ 4:42 am
Impressive!!
July 7th, 2009 @ 4:42 am
I vote for the tutorial... There is so much "filters" in AE to discovers...
And for the answers, i'm a pro hd :)

My opinion is to stay in the particular style.
Also you do not apply somebody HD player.
Can shoulder of placement in Download project for that it wants him.
It preferred in Download that you offer to us, he is something useful, as you make always.
Example, project it is in HD.

July 7th, 2009 @ 6:35 am
Hi Andrew,
Question: How do you like watching sample videos in HD?
Answer: I like watching sample videos in HD with VLC, or Quicktime, or anything else.
If you asked for technical aspect : 1280x720, is a good way to have not so much time do download,
Codec H.264 is sometimes in trouble with Contrast/Lightness,
Mpeg4 is maybe the best way
However, according to me, it's allways a great pleasure to download one of your new video sample on videocopilot.net
doesn't matter

July 7th, 2009 @ 6:38 am
Hey Andrew, regarding to the HD version, I love HD video on the web so keep it that way. One downside is that I cannot play it on my iPhone! Are there any changes to the website in the pipeline to make the site more accesible for mobile devices? I would love sitting in the train and viewing some tutorials! :)

July 7th, 2009 @ 6:40 am
looks great. It's amazing what you can do when you dabble with these programs. I'm all for HD the video took a half a second and I had player controls, maybe different browsers?

And, watching it in HD would be great.

I agree with the first comment. I thought the same thing when I watched this. How about if you'd take the earth zoom tutorial to a new level and made like a galaxy zoom or something like that :D
July 7th, 2009 @ 7:16 am
My vista doesn't like watching quicktime movies in a browser. If I want to see the player controls I have to run it in computability mode.

I wish that your sample videos were encoded in your flash player you encode your tutorials in.

But very cool! Looks like the effect you get by playing with trapcode form

love the HD!
I can't wait for the project file.

but, as 3CardMonte said,

"My vista doesn’t like watching quicktime movies in a browser. If I want to see the player controls I have to run it in computability mode."

Same here.
July 7th, 2009 @ 7:36 am
I want this as a screensaver. Hahaha. Loving the HD sample, except that I can't see the player controls any more, and I do tend to like watching those ten times or so. I think someone mentioned embedded player controls, and I'll second that motion.
July 7th, 2009 @ 7:39 am
I like the vimeo idea as well. Im on vista as well, and i lose the controls for quicktime as well. Cant seem to get it to work. Thats just me.

But a great effect, would love seeing a tutorial about that. Coule open the doors to some great organic looking effects....Portals, all kinds of space stuff. Magic type effects for maybe scifi and fantasy movies.....

Cool...

Hey andrew, great job on the tutorials, Some Killer Effects (Dissintigration...wow)

I was wondering, any chance on just linking the .flv's to download?

I spotted a certain video download helper firefox plugin in your browser on one tutorial so im sure you appreciate the occasional Need to have a copy of a stream when you don't have the money to watch the 45min tutorial in the net cafe (im saving up for action essentials 2 :-) )

Either way, thanks again,

btw, any chance on doing a tutorial on making a few endless tunnels/mazes.

Awesome "galaxy" looking animation!

As for the question at hand, I love watching 720P videos online. Seeing as how I work on a 17" HD MacBook Pro and my Mac Pro with 2 24" HD monitors, I have large browser screens so HD looks great on my end.

July 7th, 2009 @ 11:27 am
PLEASE....PLEASE...PLEASE!!!! Andrew

Turn this into a tutorial, I was really waiting and hoping that you would make some form of cool energy ball.

I have the first Action Movie Essentials, Evolution, Designer Sound FX, The Bullet, Riot Gear and The Series One DVD and with all the cool tutorials I have the ability to make a really cool action short movie, the only thing left would be the energy ball, I'm even about to buy the 2K ACTION ESSENTIALS 2, I'm shooting on the DVX 100A 24p with the Letus Adapter and I'm cutting on a PC Vista using Sony Vegas Pro 9 so i'm hoping that everything I have is going to work with the 2K since its not an HD camera and I'm hoping that my computer can run the 2K footage

I was there when you came to new york and shown the energy ball fly down the city and ever since then i was really hoping that you would do an energy ball type tutorial cause all the energy balls thats online is very very weak and bad, and yours is the best i seen thus far, and I been looking.

PLEASE...PLEASE...PLEASE...
DO AN TUTORIAL ON THE ENERGY BALL!!!!!!!!

Watching HD wideo, as doing tutorial for HD project, is realy good.
The DV standard has to disapear soon, at less of the main professional media (television, cinema...).
If we wanted to look professional, we just have to do HD :)
And inf fact, the HDcam are now not very expensive. Canon HV30 costs just 750$. And it's not the first price.

See you guy :P

HD Rocks!! I'm all for it... I know there are so slowbies out there with either slow PCs or slow internet connection. But HD gives you so much more detail. I guess the only way to satisfy the masses is by giving HD and SD options.

HD Video is fine by me - I just wait for it to download then watch it in the player of my choice (QT/WMP/VLC - whatever) As for the suggestions of Vimeo - no thank you. That just adds another opportunity for a bottleneck.

I'm looking forward to this as a tutorial... maybe it's what the crew of the Phaeton discover when they arrive at Epsilon Eridani (for those of you who saw Ronald D Moore's "Virtuality") I can just see Sam facing up to the giant swirly thing!

On my 1080p monitor, this looks like a high-resolution-small-movie. :)
It's great!

If you mess with the blur instead of Depth of Field, it could look like a cool smoky particle, even if blurred a little bit outside of the inner circle. I haven't messed with the effects you're talking about, but if the strings hung low you could make it look like a jelly fish!
...if only we could make a Marlin and Dory fish to rush through a bunch of these....

Great effect Andrew! Keep at it, I just know you'll come up with another cool Tutorial!

HD previews will be nice but maybe not for the tuts. AETUTS+ has these huge 200-300MB tutorials that use lots of my cap, just so i can watch them once or twice. Your 50-100MB size tutorials are perfect. Thanks for them.

What do you guys think about my filmtrailer? It's kind of like James Bond, Johnny English, Austin Powers, and Cops :)
Thank you kindly.
Ps. the HD-idea sounds good! I like that you dont use trapcode since its so darn expensive.

this would make for a gorgeous background element in a DVD title. I can see this dancing in the background while moving imagery took place in the foreground. Beautiful my friend.

In regard to the question; "How do you like watching sample videos in HD?" i can only imagine that you are refering to Silverlight 3? It beats the crap out of flash, but that might only be on longer clips where massive buffering is required. (If you are interested, read up on silverlight 3 here; http://silverlight.net/getstarted/silverlight3/default.aspx) - no doubt this will put flash to sleep within a relative short time. However IMO just for short clips QT HD works fine by me - keep it up Andrew :)

The HD QT is nice for visual reference. The energy ball would be perfect for my film. One character uses and energy ball or firball that she blasts at another character in one fight scene.

Furthermore, most of the movie takes place at night, and te surface lighting is something i need to do for green screen driving. I keyed, compsited everything added wiggle to actors...used the reflections plates for glass; however, lighting that effects the actors inside the vehicle as they pass by objects would be cool.

How COULDN'T we like watching HD? Enhances the viewing experience without a doubt. Should have a project file included.

I thin that is an awesome effect i think it would look great if you had a logo in front of it like o say and X or an XS lol and had light rays coming from behind the text and would make an awesome logo thing for people who make productions.
