Presets Updated

It was a long day but I rebuilt the SureTarget preset with the help of our developer Patrick and the code is now simple and elegant. More importantly however, it allowed me to add some cool new features.

The Sure Target preset now has a built in Auto-Rotation feature that captures the rotation of the targets and adjusts the Null accordingly, just as it moves from one to the other. This should save a lot of time animating the rotation for each target. We also included a build in Ease checkbox for automatically making smooth movement between targets.

The 3D Falloff Preset has also been updated to work with the Sure Target tool.

Finally, I converted ALL of the presets on Video Copilot to work with the English, Spanish, Italian, German, & French versions of After Effects! It wasn’t easy but I did it.

A demo tutorial will be out later to show you all of this in detail. Please discuss bugs and problems on the forum so we can fix em. For those who want to test out before then, the auto-rotate is based on the rotation of the 3D layers not the orientation. Be sure to change the rotation manually and not with the rotation tool.

Hey Andrew.
Just wanted to drop a link that I found today. I've been sitting with keyframes and easing for days now with no luck. So I started so look for some help. I found this great expression-set(?) that gives you a panel where you can choose how you want to ease your object. I needed a spring-effect and this was perfect. If you worked in flash and used a tweening engine with ease like "elastic, bounce, easeInOut" and so on, you'll love this.

Check it out at http://ianhaigh.com/easeandwizz/#introduction

Also, thank you for all the great tutorials and resources you have here.

I was really expecting updated versions of all your presets. I want the lightsaber preset to automatically track my authentic sword replica, Day For Night should add in a moon and streetlights, and the 3D reflections neeed to be true 3D (I'm working on a school project where I need my reflection to come to life and arm wrestle me with a spinning camera move). I'm pretty disappointed and will probably never buy your free presets again.

Your willingness to share your considerable FX knowledge with us hacks is nothing short of saintly. I just started using AE this year and thanks to you I already look like a seasoned motion graphics professional in the eyes of my clueless superiors. Maybe I'll be able to impress them enough to stay employed through this whole recession thingy. Lord knows the world doesn't need any more telemarketers. You da man!

Got them all and now I'm about to put Sure Target to the test on a news open. Thanks for everything. Now you just need to develop your own VC Particle system and the rest should be history. I'm with a few of the others... a few text presets would be really cool too. Like energetic titles, but in preset form.

Not quite sure about using the auto rotation feature. When I rotate the layers in 3D, auto rotation doesn't seem to compensate based on the layers rotation. ???

@tobias:

That link jsut made my day. Ive been using FuseKit for the past year or two, and when I recently started to learn using AE I foound myelf missing all the PennerEasing I had with Fusekit. this will help make animations much more dynamic. :)

Funny story...I had a major computer melt down and lost most of the info on my computer. I have everything backed up so it wasn't too bad. But I was really bummed because I was going to re-download all of the presets. THEN, today they are all offered in one bundle.

So needless to say...thank you Andrew...this makes life easier.

I can't get the autorotate to work either. I've trying adjusting the layer in BOTH orientation and rotation, but it doesn't follow. Is this a bug or am I doing it wrong? Anyone else have this issue?

January 22nd, 2009 @ 2:34 pm
to: Pixelpusher

I was having the same problem. You need to make the null object a 3d layer BEFORE you add the SureTarget plugin. Use the rotation instead of the orientation parameters. Hope this helps.

Thank you Andrew and team for your continued hard work.

Back on topic, I can't thank you enough for SureTarget, Andrew. Once again, you've arrived just in time to save my sleeping hours by providing a tool so I won't be up at the dead of night. You rock, sir, and I'll continue to buy your free tutorials. ;)

Hey
Great preset but when I'm using 9 or more targets it bugs out. The targets get greyish and multiple instances of them appear.
January 22nd, 2009 @ 3:59 pm
The download will be back online later today. We're fixing a couple of things. As mentioned above, the auto-rotate should work, just make sure the layer is 3D first before adding sure target.

I am trying to get the opening animation to fly in from off camera large scale to 100% but I cant get it. Everything else just moves by but the layer I want to see move does not. I came up with a work around. duplicate layer and animate it seperately add have the align and turn one on and off.... it works but ther emust be a better way. Could you inlcude this in your tutorial?
Vince
January 22nd, 2009 @ 6:47 pm
@mchurgin: to fix it you need to animate the layers anchor point. select the layer, hit the letter A on the keyboard, turn on the stopwatch, animate the z plane towards and behind the camera, then set another key frame for where you want it to end and viola! Hope this helped.
January 23rd, 2009 @ 12:21 am
