NEW TUTORIAL: Presets & More

In this new tutorial we’ll examine some of the new features of Sure Target 1.5 and using it with the updated 3D falloff preset. New features include, auto-rotate, auto-ease and unlimited targets by simply duplicating the last target in the effects control.

Important Notes: Sure Target 1.5 must be used with 3D layers. Make sure they are 3D before applying or using the preset. For the auto-rotate feature to work, you need to adjust the rotation of the 3D layer and not the orientation. This tutorial covers all of this and more.

If you downloaded the presets package yesterday, be sure to download them again because we made some changes to a few of the default settings that were causing some errors.

Thank you so much. This would be a good idea for the next plug in. All your preset would be in plugin (ALL in one) that would be soooo cool!
January 23rd, 2009 @ 10:54 am
This is by far the best thing to come from your site. For the past few years I've been saying the same negative things about After Effects. It's poor camera controls and poor 3d integration. I am convinced that this is one of the best things to help use the 3d camera. I hope you continue to support this preset, add new options, and watch it grow into something that can ship with Cs5.

Again... you gave this away too... don't you have a kid to feed now?

thanks for all your hard work and dedication.

Holy Crap this preset is awesome. What great creativity and dynamic solution created by you and your team Andrew.
I would have easily paid $20 for this preset. Wow.
I have a similar product for Cinema4D called Steadycam Pro, but I never thought that it would see it for AE.
Amazing, Amazing, Amazing. Nuff said.

Hmmmz,

Am I doing something wrong or is the Sure Target 1.5.1 Preset ONLY supporting Z-rotation with autorotate?

Thats what you get if you switch the Null to 3D AFTER parenting the camera. I have to follow guidelines better, i know. :D

Just letting you know, it doesn't seem to be working with AE CS4...

January 24th, 2009 @ 12:41 pm
I just used SureTarget 1.5 and falloff for my most recent AE CS4 project and it worked seamlessly....awesome preset and saved me a lot of time! -- Many thanks Andrew
January 24th, 2009 @ 12:49 pm
People having trouble in CS4, please follow the directions in order for it to work. The reason Z rotation is only showing up is because your layer was not 3D before applying the preset. All layers must first be 3D before using the preset otherwise the rotation values are not present for the code to be added.

Andrew: I have tried several times, and made sure to follow instructions by the letter. Auto Easy-ease and rotations don't seem to work, after applying the preset (with all the layers already as 3D layers).

Hey Andrew, I can't believe you actually hear my humble idea about the falloff with the suretarget together, yeah, I know for sure that I wasn't the only one who told you about it, but I'm glad that I send you that idea, and you even answered it!, that was enough coolness for me, but now I see that you made them work! Nice man!, keep up the good work and thanks for listen any ideas from out there.
January 25th, 2009 @ 9:26 am
YES, Best preset EVA!!!! Took me a while to figure out what I was doing wrong. Then I rembered that Z-Rotation only exists in 2D space. But now I got it all working. Can't wait to do some really creative things with this.

January 25th, 2009 @ 10:25 am
Hey Andrew this is a great preset. Here's a question for you. So AE CS 4 has that nifty Photoshop Live 3d. In theory the sure target preset could work on those layers could they not? Thanks

Hi Andrew,

any Idea 4 taking camera target from the beginning of a text to its end?

Yeap, great preset...

Sometimes in my null-camera, I create a wiggle expressions linked to separate xyz effect
(wiggle time on x
wiggle amount on x
wiggle time on y
wiggle amount on y
wiggle time on z
wiggle amount on z)...
This way I can have wiggle in time separately on x y and z axis...
It's nice and maybe is a good idea for SureTarget V2.0

You make our life easier(or easy ease...)

Shabab: One null in the beginning of the text, another null on the end? T1=1 null, T2=2 null...

Kudos to Patrick and you Mr. Kramer.

I´m astonished and baffled about ST 1.5.
Don't know, but many these days try to make tutorials to sell their products well, but i've never seen something that goes that decent way you guys do.

Again. Kudos to you. Amazing...

great presets Andrew and update.
but i was wandering if i can link the ST with Trapcode Sound Keys and with the selections beat i can move the ST.
i tried that but with no luck maybe it need some modifcations to the expressions itself.
any idea how ?
thanks in advance

New to after effect, i was reading some of your stuff: is there anything that works for AE 8 for Macs. I just got the old version of the intel (10.5.6; processor 2.6GHz intel core 2 duo; 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM). what should i buy from your site, and am i in the wrong place for a beginner?

really like your site, it made me want to tackle after effects.

Andrew:

Thanks so much for all of your contributions. I am essentially a video producer and consequently animation is a necessity for me rather than being my forte. Your tutorials have been instrumental in propelling me into the world of After Effects.

There's nothing worse than having to sit down to a bunch of dry tutorials in angst to learn a new application; especially one as daunting as After Effects. The tempo of your tutorials in addition to some humor along the way has made learning a joy.

It's obvious that you and your associates put in a substantial amount of effort in producing what I would consider the best tutorials on the market.

Thanks so much.

Andrew, is there a way to take all of the SURE TARGET keyframes and convert them to regular keyframes for the null, thus getting rid of SURE TARGET and enabling some fine tuning of the position, angle etc? I love SURE TARGET, but with my 2.5D video, I can't zoom in close enough to some of the targets.

January 28th, 2009 @ 1:34 pm
I know it was stated earlier, but when useing Sure Target(a wonderful time saving tool btw) Make sure to make the null object 3D and parent the camera to it before placing the preset. If you do not there will be some scripting issues... that make take a minute to figure out.

Inserted this into a project that I had started last year. The initial time it took to keyframe the camera took a total of about 3 hours and was difficult. Sure Target only took about 3 minutes and looked cleaner than my original.

Hi, friends of VideoCopilot.
all yours tutorials is the best, and thank you very much for your help.
Excuse me my english is not good. Bye.
February 7th, 2009 @ 8:05 pm
Dear Andrew:(I say dear because your are in my live many times) I decompress and install spanish version of your incredible preset (Thank you, man!) and AE says this:

"After effects advertencia: la clase "Effect" no tiene ninguna propiedad ni metodo con el nombre "Casilla de verificaciÛn" Expresion deshabilitada.

The problem is:
when i decompress the files the text "verificación" its convert to "verificaciÛn"
I tried to edit SureTarget.ffx in my copy of TextMate and find and replace all this words (10 in total) but when i saved it and place at the scripts folder again and open AE, the software says "The file is incomplete"...

Can you help me?

I know i can open up Ae in english but its better for my in spanish (as you can see at my horrible english)

Thanks and Peace
February 7th, 2009 @ 10:17 pm
Hi again, i open the SureTarget.ffx in BBedit an change “Û” by "ó" (18 times) and finaly the preset its ok (i think so)
If you want i can give you
