Fringe Premieres Tonight

One of the top secret projects I worked on recently was the intro for the new FOX show Fringe. It premieres tonight at 8/7c.

It’s funny because the intro has not been published or aired yet, but some people have guessed I was somehow involved… I WAS involved, just not in any of the great advertisements that Fox created to promote the show.

I was honored to be able to work on the project and with producer J.J. Abrams. Not only is he a great guy but you may be surprised to know that he is a fellow After Effects user too Pretty cool.

Be sure to check it out!

PS, no spoilers or any of that stuff please.

BRAVO andrew bravo. i think it is fantastic that you worked on this project. just shows that you are working on big projects.

andrew can i tell you something? a guy like you would be needed in the hollywood CGI industry. like a james cameron type of guy. cameron was always the guy who pushed everything to the limit. he always uses something new and groundbreaking. AVATAR will use new technology. i like your way of thinking and solving problems. a guy like you would do inredible things on big budget movies.

i am expecting tomorrow 2 VFX shots that will push boujou and AE to the limit. i htink you already pushing everything in AE to the limit.

I have a feeling Andrew works on a lot more big projects than we know about. Remember, he runs a VFX production company aside from Video Copilot. Which makes his contributions even more incredible. He started VCP because he wanted to help others achieve great things with AFX. Kudos Mr, Kramer!

Wow... working with J.J. Abrams... I'm jealous. Huge fan of his. And of yours AK. I'll be doubly sure to catch Fringe's pilot now. Now I'll be walking away from it with a dozen unanswered after effects questions in addition to the unanswered J.J. Abrams' standard plot questions.

I missed the intro due to traffic, but I did see some helicopters flying by that looked eerily familiar. Was that you?
Sean
September 9th, 2008 @ 5:49 pm
Another question, were those your choppers in Baghdad, and are you working on the show consistently, or just the pilot/premire.
September 9th, 2008 @ 5:50 pm
I don't think there is TWITCH in the intro...
September 9th, 2008 @ 6:04 pm
BTW, I didn't any of the impressive Visual Effects for the show. It was actually all done before I got on board to do the show intro.
Miguel Carrera
September 9th, 2008 @ 6:09 pm
Would someone be able to (legally) upload the intro so we can watch it outside the US?

September 9th, 2008 @ 6:09 pm
I think the TWITCH comments are coming from seeing this- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwquRhN29Og which looks very twitchey, but isn't what I saw watching the intro to the show.

"analyze it"? Maybe I won't... JK. I will try to post it tonight so everyone can see. The one on Youtube uses the same music but not the same visual.

Please post it! I'm working on a deadline and don't have time to watch it tonight.

Yeah, I know those guys at Fox use After Effects + 3DS Max. I talked with a few of them at a Motion Graphics Los Angeles meeting last year. They said that they were just beginning to get away from 3D Invigorator and beginning to use Max.

Anyway, congrats on the intro.. is this your highest profile work?
Tim
September 9th, 2008 @ 6:52 pm
And by highest profile, I mean.. nationally televised.

I know the global audience here is HUGE! :)
Jason
September 9th, 2008 @ 6:53 pm

September 9th, 2008 @ 7:05 pm
Congrats on getting your work out to such a broad audience. If the upcoming episodes are anything like the debut, I will definitely be a regular viewer, and I can see it picking up steam.

I love how it is kind of like X-Files on crack...or LSD better yet. I hope everything is somehow tied together is a sensical fashion. If it's anything like LOST I'm sure it will.

Anyways, congrats again for getting your work on the front end of an awesome network show. It makes your little minions happy.
Tim
September 9th, 2008 @ 7:09 pm
Will I get more chicks now if I tell them I posted to the same blog as the guy who did the Fringe intro?
September 9th, 2008 @ 7:11 pm
Andrew, the show was stellar! What all did you do on it? I know you did the helicopter shot and the intro sequence... what about all the location titles... they seemed Krameresk...
September 9th, 2008 @ 7:13 pm
Saw the show. Excellent job on the intro.

BTW.. got yout Sound effect last week and already put it to use on this video.. http://numanandsamir.com/2008/09/07/episode-3-adam-be-saved/

Camera was not that great so the quality of the video is lacking. This was also my first dive into video editing so be kind. :)

I saw the opening title, and said to myself "that looks like Kramer's work."
Then I read your blog.
Looks like JJ Abrams inserted a lot of your 'look' throughout his show. Nice touch, having the locator supers as 3D drive-through title.
Another Kramer 'look.'

So I have a question for you Andrew.
JJ Abrams did a Ted Talk awhile back and he expressed his love for the ability to VFX cheap and creatively. I knew right then that he used After Effects... But then he showed some random work by people. One of the pieces he showed was a jeep going down a run way with a plane landing behind it then breaking off its forward landing gear and sliding on the jeep.

Was that you? Because the guys in the jeep looked a little bit like some of the people you might use.

BRAVO Andrew! BRAVO! Excellent stuff my man!

I hope you get royalties off the viewership. Considering the number of loyal fans you already have from this motley crew that saw it and excellent site , you would be a million large over night! (Didn't mean for that to rhyme, just kinda happened.)

Take care sir! CONGRATULATIONS! Very nice!

This is so cool! I cant believe people guessed you were working on this! You left no hints all you said was that you were walking on a show and you couldn't say much about it! Then loads of people just guessed Fringe! I can see why you were pretty jazzed to do the titles on this, its a huge project!

Cant wait for the Meteorite film its about 16:50 in England so i guess it will be on the site later tonight for me! i'm not sure the exact time differemce between America and the UK!

September 10th, 2008 @ 9:09 am
Did you by chance do any of the titles for the trailer?
September 10th, 2008 @ 9:15 am
Very cool intor Andrew. I hope it turns into some other nice jobs for you.

The show itself was great too. That's always a plus. I mean, if you had done the intro for "What's Happening: The Reunion", not as cool, even if the intro was awesome. :D

When they offer you the opportunity to do a new intro for Spongebob, you'll know you've made it!

I was a little skeptical about this show even though I am a fan of JJ Abrams' series. My turning point was to know that you worked on the project. Watched it last night and was awed to see that my "teachers" work was prime time. Not to mention the show was awesome.

Thanks for opening my eyes

BTW, if you ever get too busy for Videocopilot.net, working for a living and supporting your family with the work that you love to do, (and do so well) and have to shut it down, let me be the first to say thank you for all you have done - you have created a legacy you can be very proud of - and I dare say changed many lives and carreer paths for the better. Thanks!

I wondered if you had anything to do with it...Every few minutes there was a 3d word phrase in the program that is just like your last "3d shadows" tutorial. I kept telling my wife, "Hey, I can do that.." Don't know if those were you but it smelled like your handiwork!! :)

I just watched that ep. of Fringe last night and wow that was cool. Those are pretty sweet fx. So yeah your title sequense was lookin' good dude. Did you do all tracked titles within the episode too? Either way that was a good idea I'd never seen before myself. Cool way to intros the locations. Anyway good job Andrew.

Great work Andrew! Well done and very much deserved!
September 11th, 2008 @ 8:42 am
I forgot about it last night somehow (never even saw info on the show actually, but I mainly just watch Jeopardy, Discovery, TLC) and I would have seen it online if FOX didn't have some stupid proprietary player on their site. I don't see why people think it important to have their own stupid player in order to show you their content. I'll try to catch it but if I can't I guess I'll cast aside my proprietary player download boycott to get a glimpse of your sweet, sweet intro.
September 11th, 2008 @ 8:47 am
I was watching this at my parent's house, and when I see it, my jaw drops. My mom asks, "what?"

I tell her it's nothing, but I know that it's yours. It would be too long of a story to explain.

I also thought of you when the Blackhawk helicopters were flying over Baghdad.

I just LOVE the matchmoved scene setters. That is such a good idea, and if I had the resources to make it look real, I'd do it myself.
September 11th, 2008 @ 9:56 am

Hey Andrew - Congratulations!!!

I watched the show on Tuesday and during the intro I honest to gosh - no kidding - thought, "Andrew Kramer could do this - looks like his kind of stuff" and I also thought, "Thanks to Andrew, I have some idea of how to do it myself" So thanks for all the kind lessons you've provided to those of us online, and once again, congratulations on your success - may it lead to more and more.

Blessings,

Hey Andrew,
Why was my post edited? That's kind of lame. I didn't say anything remotely obscene, vulgar, controversial, mean, or off-topic. Did I interrupt the Andrew Kramer lovefest? It was a joke. I guess you didn't get it.

P.S. Once again the intro is AWESOME.=

I'm guessing people saw some of the previews for Fringe on the Fox web site and saw the ink drop elements from Riot Gear. Though I've been seeing those in a lot of places these days. :)

Also, I'm guessing now that the other top secret project is for the film Body of Lies (the helicopter scenes in the trailers look strikingly familiar). If I'm right, blink twice....
