I’ve been meaning to post some new stuff lately but I’ve been smashed working on a couple of projects… One aspect involves emulating the look of a first-person-shooter like Call of Duty… What I did was started playing! I ran through the action inside the game and screen captured the video. Then using 3D tracking software I was able to extract the camera movement and bring it in to my 3D game world. Admittedly, I’ll have to slow down the movement since it will seem strange to people who are not as good as me *yawn*

The boujou stuff is still on the way and will be the first thing out when this is all over, just need to edit and compress the videos. I’ll try to sneak another shortcuts episode in later this week if I can find the time. In the mean time, if you hit the HOME key in After Effects it will bring you back to the beginning of the comp. NICE!

August 18th, 2008 @ 11:46 pm
hit Home key tip!, lol
August 18th, 2008 @ 11:47 pm
Good idea that. What better way to get a game looking camera than to use a game camera!
August 18th, 2008 @ 11:52 pm
i loved call of duty 4
good to know you're using it for video editing purposes

can't wait for the boujou stuff!
August 18th, 2008 @ 11:53 pm
Haha, that's a cool a idea. Take your time and don't stress.
August 18th, 2008 @ 11:53 pm

Thank you so much AK.

August 19th, 2008 @ 12:53 am
No probs Sir AK, take all the time you need...

I will play C.O.D till it arrives...

August 19th, 2008 @ 1:05 am
That COD project you working on sounds pretty good, hope you get a chance to get it done and post so we can see. It's sad to say but I think the beautiful days are numbered here for us on, because lets faced it. AK is getting the big jobs now and won't have time for us and little side tutorials anymore :(
August 19th, 2008 @ 1:25 am
You are one clever guy Andrew... Good Luck
August 19th, 2008 @ 1:32 am
lol, i love COD 4. It is so awesome. I always wanted to make a FPS style movie
August 19th, 2008 @ 1:41 am
my master!
I wish you many more years of health and wisdom to teach us on the VisualFX!
August 19th, 2008 @ 2:28 am
'HOME' sweet 'HOME', but I most like the 'Render' button. :)
August 19th, 2008 @ 2:30 am
Home key ay?
Does that mean if I hit the END key.. wait nevermind, I'm just confusing myself.
August 19th, 2008 @ 2:34 am
I'm hanging out to see how you can capture a game camera movement for AE magic. Any tips?
August 19th, 2008 @ 2:37 am
yeeeeeeeeeeees the 3d tracking tutorial is coming.

i think this will be the best videocopilot tutorial. because from here on we can do everything. eeeeeeeeeverything.
August 19th, 2008 @ 2:59 am
Sounds like just an excuse to play COD :D

I know the video copilot team contributed to the making of the game (blood splatters)so I guess you have the right to play it whenever.
August 19th, 2008 @ 3:03 am
Hit home key... hahaha very funny
August 19th, 2008 @ 3:20 am
...Wow! A very nice, out of the box, kind of idea!! :]

question is...what will you use as a material for this project?
because i guess u wont be using Live Footage..
but youll just build a certain "Sphere Space" out of images in AE, and import that camera?
August 19th, 2008 @ 4:00 am
what is the key for fullscreen on a laptop? please post symbol!
August 19th, 2008 @ 4:02 am
Dont worry about it dude. Do what you need to do to feed that baby of yours. My impatience has had me already start to experiment with Boujou. It's actually pretty easy. The only problem is the trial version doesn't let you save anything. So unless you're going bootleg, there is always Voodoo. Voodoo isn't so bad. You just have to use *png sequences. But hey, it's free!
August 19th, 2008 @ 4:58 am
home key you say?
August 19th, 2008 @ 5:53 am need to hurry up and come back home. We need TUTORIALS DAILY! :-)
August 19th, 2008 @ 5:54 am
man...i cant wait for boujou stuff to come out..but i dnt even have there other programs like boujou?
August 19th, 2008 @ 6:09 am
Well I spend most of the night looking for this "Home" key and still no luck. This After Effects program is trickier that I thought it was going to be...
August 19th, 2008 @ 6:32 am
Andrew, no need to make up some ominous "project" to excuse a few days of conquering COD - we've all been there. Looking forward to having you back...
August 19th, 2008 @ 6:34 am
Haha, you're hilarious. Totally stoke about anything you have coming!
August 19th, 2008 @ 6:52 am
If the Home key brings you to the Beginning, what, Dare I Ask it, would the End key do? LOL
August 19th, 2008 @ 7:05 am
I love COD. I Love GTA4. I love VCP. I LOVE CAMERA. Hows that kid doing Andrew? Has she found her voice, where she likes to hear herself make sounds?
August 19th, 2008 @ 7:25 am
What about the TILDE KEY? I hear that's pretty special, too... Have fun... Oh, when do you have time to hang with that beautiful family of yours?
August 19th, 2008 @ 7:28 am
rofl. motion tracking the game footage. nice
Some Guy
August 19th, 2008 @ 7:45 am
When I press the HOME key AE says:
"Press any key to continue, or any other key to quit."
What should I do?
August 19th, 2008 @ 7:48 am
i think most of the motion tracking will be from the kill cam
August 19th, 2008 @ 8:13 am
boooo! u suck!
tommie12P(Thorsten Miess)
August 19th, 2008 @ 8:22 am
:D nice cant wait to see this stuff again
August 19th, 2008 @ 8:24 am
rofl @ Some Guy

hope you have fun Sir when you are doing the Call of Duty thingy ^^

and thanks for the HOME tip hahah :):):)
August 19th, 2008 @ 8:40 am
Andrew you know you dont have the guts to face me on call of duty :) i am the almighty, however... Good Stuff!
helpin alot of people and i appreciate it
August 19th, 2008 @ 8:59 am
Funny, however where I am from, Smashed means "So drunk you have to sleep with your face in a bucket"
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:02 am
So what happens when you hit:

See if anyone else remembers this? :)
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:18 am
Anyone know how to compile the source code and make a gui
August 19th, 2008 @ 10:55 am
Playing games are we..well I knew Jack was not a dull boy:)
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:29 am
@james: damn, i know this combination... but i can't recall the game... i believe it was a nintendo game... super mario bros? tetris? metroid?
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:55 am
@robert its the konami cheat code. Any old-school gamer knows that.
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:57 am
Andrews been smashed!! Me too!! Nothin' like After Effects and beer!
August 19th, 2008 @ 12:33 pm
it a cheat for the original Contra for the first Nintendo console, it gives the players 30 lives.

I can't wait for new tutorial Andrew, hook us up please! and thanks for the tip.
Josh Johnson
August 19th, 2008 @ 12:37 pm
Great news and your current project sounds very interesting!
August 19th, 2008 @ 1:36 pm
Wow. And that is why AK is where he is today. I'd never in a million years of thought of using that technique to get camera movements..
I dont have access to a good quality camcorder but I never thought about using video captured from games..
Fraps + Boujou = lots of quite amusing possibilities!!
August 19th, 2008 @ 1:44 pm
@ James Cawley

I remember it well. Not that I used it at the start of like every single game I played.
August 19th, 2008 @ 1:47 pm
SWEET! What's your gamertag? I would love to play some Cod4 with you sometime.
Good luck with all of the stuff you're working on!

August 19th, 2008 @ 1:48 pm
hey you got me on this one,so what you saying is we can get to do a footage with a fps look ,right? like in DOOM , i CANT wait to see it.
August 19th, 2008 @ 2:52 pm
hey andrew am runing a server and i have admin so if you like to join us let me know Team|Fear the name of our server and my xfire is clancy30
August 19th, 2008 @ 3:11 pm

It's just one of those things where you can tell it will be epic...
August 19th, 2008 @ 3:24 pm
Okaaay.. but what key do I hit to get my very own Sam Loya?
August 19th, 2008 @ 6:27 pm
Oh no! I'm currently storyboarding a Call of Duty parody short, and a COD tutorial may change a shot or two, as well as make a lot of video copilot fans think that's I'm a "poser" and "uncreative" for using anything inspired by a tutorial.
August 19th, 2008 @ 6:39 pm
I think by "Smashed", Andrew secretly means that he has been playing Super Smash Bros. this whole time....
August 19th, 2008 @ 9:01 pm
Hey, Andrew! Video Trace!!! It's very cool!!!
August 19th, 2008 @ 11:34 pm
What HAPPENED??? I was sitting at my Grandma's house, doing some After Effects, (My grandma gives me tips on special effects since she's seen them live in world war one :) ) and I pressed the home key like you said and there was this lound WOOSH and all went dark and when I opened my eyes, I found myself in my own home - 3 towns away!
August 20th, 2008 @ 1:54 am
What about 'up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right, then ABC at the same time'? Ha!

Looking forward to whatever you give us Mr K, any and all of your advice, jokes and hilarity is appreciated.
August 20th, 2008 @ 2:20 am
Hey, I had an idea! We're all intrested in all the projects you work on outside of Video Copilot why dont you make a section in the blog where you show or let us know more about work you are doing for clients. It would be really cool to see all the different show titles and adverts you must work on. ! :D

Just an idea.

August 20th, 2008 @ 7:59 am
I'm having trouble with this tutorial, is the home key on the main menu inside after effects? Maybe you could go over it one more time in more detail.

I spilled coffee on my keyboard and my Home key is stuck and I really need to get to the start of the timeline. Is there any other way to get to the beginning of the timeline? I use AE CS3 and have Windows XP pro.

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but will you ever have a section on your site where you'll post quicktimes of all the promos you do for the site for educational purposes. I like studying your promos and figuring them out. Its great inspiration!

August 21st, 2008 @ 4:10 pm

Only about 30 more FX shots to go...
August 22nd, 2008 @ 2:27 pm
@ Seth Johnson

go find other tutorials eleswhere if you really have an ego that big. AK has held it down way too many times to even have to look at your pointless comment.
August 22nd, 2008 @ 2:56 pm
Sorry AK and everybody,

Since 2cd of August it"s pretty boring here...

No use to give AK 121 times telling how great he is, we all know he is the best in AE and 3D now!
Let"s try to give some honest grown up comments here!

August 23rd, 2008 @ 2:41 am
