First Look: Car Hit Tutorial

The new Car Hit Tutorial will be online sometime tomorrow. Here is a sample of what we will be creating plus some bonus footage. Watch Clip

Interesting Flashback:
Some of you may remember seeing a clip where a van runs over some guy.  In April 2006, just before getting married, I created a tutorial demonstrating a car hit effect for that shot. But, I was very busy with wedding plans and the Serious Effects and Compositing DVD that I never released it. Then I re-visited the tutorial but the magic was lost…  I always planned to remake it and I think it turned out much better this time around. Only took 2-years. Lousy time-zones.

Special Thanks to:
Jeff, Tino, Tahna, and Mark for helping behind the scenes on this tutorial.

Am I forgetting someone? Saaa… Sss.. Mmm…  NOPE.

Just kidding ;)

June 2nd, 2008 @ 2:41 am

the quality is WOW, can’t wait!!

“Tahna keeps looking at your back when you are talking”
AK IS HHHHHHOT!

June 2nd, 2008 @ 2:43 am

Flashback: I am one of the very lucky guys who have seen that old clip and tutorial :) Same car, maybe same driver ? … but I notice Sam took your place in the starring !

There are some very nice improvement on this new version, like the car wreck / damage effect that are not in the old version.

I also notice that Sam is very flexible just after he got hit by the car… or may that be a post production effect ? :)

Once again, you took this car hit effect to the next level. Great work :)

@Joel and Toneto: You can find the answer of your question and many others over here: http://www.videocopilot.net/contact.html

@Ellius The old tutorial have never been released, it’s not available, and will probably never be.

Cheers,

Marc.

Noddy
June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:06 am

I noticed Tahna is now checking out Mr.K’s butt in this one… I think I need to watch it again, to see if Tino & Sam are watching K’s bits too, since thy normally checkout T’s…???

Youse guys are funny! ;)

June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:08 am

Awesome work cant wait but honestly did you get the idea from my youtube after effects hit by car tutorials =]? lol http://www.youtube.com/dillonp23 haha

June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:14 am

Wow, nice! Love the small glass fragments that fly off after the hit. And by the way, not that this needs saying because it’s pretty obvious, but Tahna is smokin! :)

Bones

Chad
June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:17 am

haha funny man, tahna is hot!

Peter
June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:25 am

Looks awesome, but I think there is something not quite right with the sound when Sam speaks. Then it even looks like Tahna says “I love you”. Did you ADR the entire thing?

Can’t wait to see how you deformed that car…

June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:27 am

To be overly critical, if you step frame it you can see Sam’s shadow is fake, and his face is quite obviously roto’d, but when watched in motion, you can’t tell any of this, which is pretty cool. I too noticed how flexible he is in this. Puppet tool? I think this would be a perfect application of the puppet tool, and much cooler than doing some sort of monty python animation! Hmmmm… that sounds like a cool tutorial idea…

Doggy X
June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:29 am

man looks awesome. This is first time i see someone to interact with car.The car is damaged.Cool! :) :):) I’m waiting

June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:31 am

yeap.. he looks kinda roto’d. still cool tho. can’t wait to see how you bent the hood bit.

dean
June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:34 am

that was ill, also that girl is actuly AMAZING,

but even more to the point your hoodie is sickk,…. Who is it by?

Marchy D
June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:39 am

Awesome as usual, Andrew! Can’t wait!
BTW – Is Tahna Sam’s sister? Cousin? They kind of share similarities.
Uh…around the eyes and nose, that is. No offense to Tahna, of course. But if you picture Sam in a wig and squint really, really, really…um…
You know what? Forget I asked.
Sorry Tahna. 8)

June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:42 am

The sound from the dialogue between Tahna and Sam doesn’t match.. We see her move her lips but nuthin comes out… Except that, great as usual.. I’m curious to see how you deformed the hood of the truck after the hit.. 3D maybe…

Kepp up the good work man

ps: Really nicce sweater dude…

June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:47 am

So I’ll be getting this tutorial as a birthday present tomorrow! That is AWESOME! Thanks Mr Kramer for all your work!

Hey Andrew, im kinda new with filming so i wonder, did you have 2 cameras when you shot the scene, or did film it twice? Im thinking in the beginning when sam talks to tana.

Vikram

Daryl Booth

If they are related was this filmed in the deep south?

And if so why was there no banjo track?

;-)

you used “kick+snare” for slaping…
it is better to combine snap with clap, or sample yourself hitting Sam for real :]

This is looking so fricking nice. And not only Tahna but you’re tutorial is nice too :p Awsome job. And a very nice hit. Specially your comment at the end made me laugh so hard it scared my neighbours. Can’t wait to see the tutorial.

June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:31 am

sweet! i’ve been waiting for this tutorial ever since you announces it like one week ago!

like people above, i’d say that when you watch it frame by frame you can see the shadows are fake and roto, but whatever, in real time motion it really roxx!

cant wait to see how you did to create that effect

actually i was wondering if you filmed tahna and the car together, or if you filmed them separatedly, since she’s not blurred at all and the car really is!

awersome demo, can’t wait for tommorow to watch it!

bruno
June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:34 am

she looks like she is telling sam what to say… she… kinda moves her lips to sam lines,,,

Martin P.
June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:41 am

Wow. Very nice effect. I know from my some experience that the only way to achieve that is to roto the hit person. So if you did it in some other way I will be suprised alot :D . Can’t wait to see how you deformed that car :) . Anyway the shot is soooo realistic in real time watching !! Good job. So only the sound is odd at first but after few times watching it I got use to it :) .

June 2nd, 2008 @ 6:04 am

Looks great; can’t wait.

Not to be overly greedy, but there is also a shot in your reel that shows a car accident from inside the car. Any chance we could get a tut on that sometime?? Pretty please!?!? I actually need to do a shot like that for a project. Thanks again for the awesome work you guys do.

P.S. The footage is so beautifully crystal clear. I may have to step up to HD.

June 2nd, 2008 @ 6:09 am

I love the way the hood of the truck crumples up upon impact. Very subtle, yet makes it VERY VERY believable. Can’t wait for the tutorial!

wersa
June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:05 am

On 312F it is visible cut off half Sam face, not really nice;
315F color correction of the shoes is necessary, looks too bright , though a bumper of the machine already directly above them.
Deformation of a cowl – awesome!
324F-328F – The driver has brought down the person, 3 meters drag it on a cowl, but he don’t worry about it. Just look at his hand, it stiil lays on a car door!
Always want to know, how they do that trick! Can’t wait tutorial!

June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:06 am

COOL!!!! Nice job dude!

jenzung
June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:13 am

puppettool eh? well stepping by frames makes me excited on doing that stuff too, I’ll try before ya tut. but the cars hood?

June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:16 am

hey awesome clip,
i needed your advice on how you made that punching sound in the end, it sounds very real, did you combine various Designer Sound Fx sounds or you made it?
thanks a lot

ps:lot of punching sounds on the net sound very fake.

June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:20 am

Only one thing to say…Tana u are so hot..!!!…again GREAT JOB, keep going VC Team!!! you rocks!!!!!

June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:24 am

As far as the ADR, there was a little more to the scene but I cut some stuff to make it faster. Perhaps I will post the extended version if I have time. The scene actually continues on as well…

June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:24 am

Poor Sam, he’s the brunt of all disasters, because I knew that Sam goes through all these things I couldn’t stop laughing!

Great work guys! Can’t wait to see it.

June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:26 am

I dont quite get why people feel the need to critique the video?
If you can do it better, why are you waiting for a tutorial?

Not suggesting that everything Andrew Kramer does is perfect or untouchable, but surely the point is to benefit from the professional knowledge he passes on, rather than try to bring him down a peg or two.

The effect is undeniably awesome.

June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:36 am

You see thats why you should always look both way when being part of an Andrew Kramer video tutorial. HAHA!

June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:38 am

At first I was worried about Sam’s well being but then looked back at your older tutorials and realized he has a super human healing ability. Thats why he was able to be chilling on the truck after the video was done. PHEW!

Flubber
June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:45 am

nice, i like how the front of the car bends when it hits Sam (feeling sorry for him…………………..not) anyways, nice effect, waiting forward for the tutorial and nice acting by the Tahna..

keep up the good work as always

Donovan
June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:46 am

i jus tried this at home (after looking thoroughly for a don’t try dis at home warning but there wasn’t any, so i guess it was safe to procede) so i set up the shot with my cousin in the road, using a car instead of a van. It worked great…really spectacular, the hood bent, glass shattered and everything…just have one question….how to I get my cousin to move again?

lol j/k

Also….assuming that Andrew planned to hit sam with a van, i’m sure the slap scene was short before :p

around Halloween, i shot my boss getting hit by a bus. i made it more challenging for myself by shooting both plates handheld. i then stabilized one plate and match moved it to the other. i think it came out great, until my boss asked me to throw some blood splatter in there. i thought it came out lame, but he loved it…

The effect not only has some very creative in car panning near the end, but really sells a car hit effect. Not sure how they did it and the stars are both stuntmen I think but…

Worth a watch.

Cheers,

Chris

ps. Sam, you shoulda Dodged and you wouldn’t have gotten Ram’d :-o

@ Andrew Kramer: I would love to see an extended version of that clip. I also would love to see this kind of clips for every future tutorial. Keep up the amazing work!

PS: Why are you hitting your comrades every time I see you (except the Valentine’s Day video with Katie)? First the Designer Sound FX promo special extended bonus thingy with you hitting Sam in the face, now this one. Is it because you know how to roll, baby? :D

June 2nd, 2008 @ 2:01 pm

Andrew,
Is Tahna going to be doing any more tutorials with you? She’s way better looking than Sam! Sorry Sam, you’re cool though guy! Nice clip, can’t wait for the tutorial!

Andrew,
I like the idea of this tutorial. I like what I’ve seen so far. I had an initial feeling that something wasn’t quite right with the shot. Mainly at the initial contact. Like Chris, I thought of Nash Edgerton’s Spider. The effects were done in part my Morgan Jones of Australia. Check out his reel for a breakdown:
http://mo.rgan.com.au/reel/reel.mov

The fact that she really is being pulled at a high speed with a wire rig makes her motion seem right.

awesome its was very realistic

Paul Siola
June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:25 pm

This my ‘video-copilot educated guess’ of how i think the effect was pulled off.

Andrew photoshops Sam out of the scene (or alternatively masks him out) puts him on a pre-composed layer, then uses the puppet tool to bend Sam onto the hood of the car. Also takes a couple of shots of the scene with Tahna and the moving vehicle and seperately Sam walking out onto the street.

The bending of the hood may have been done using some composting of static objects most probably extracted from the car.

Tihee =) Forgive me Andrew, this is only my guess…i could be wrong….but i’m sure there are more ways to do the same thing….=)

June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:37 pm

Actually there is no bending in this shot or puppet tool. Although I will demonstrate that part in the tutorial and ways to use the puppet tool. Sam is all original, just rotated to make it more extreme. No photoshop used. The hood was created with images but you’ll have to wait and see how. There is a good amount of roto work to be done…

June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:39 pm

HEY NICE VIDE WHAT CAMERA DID YOU USE.(YOU PROBLY WON T SAY ANYTHING
)

June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:49 pm

@ SOME PERSON….

If you look at the FAQ section, Andrew mentions which camera he uses.

Paul Siola
June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:01 pm

Great stuff, can’t wait…i can see there is some roto to do as i also see movement in sams arm as he is hit by the motion of the vehicle…but i guess the aim is to get it looking as realistic as possible even after the car hits sam…having him interact or simulating the interaction with Sam and the vehicle…

Good Acting Sam!…I could swear it looks like you’ve been hit by a vehicle before…hehehe….=)

Anyways, i might say something that’s totally way-off to what ur gonna show us in the tutorial so might as well save me the shame…

YEAH
June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:25 pm

Andrew, do you exercise? cuz i can see you’re a skinny guy

Sam
June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:32 pm

Looks good. The only small critique I’d offer is that you break the 180 rule when Sam walks away. Its necessary, I guess, to separate the dialogue from the effects shot and its not too jarring.

Quick question. Have you come across the issue of H.264 slightly washing out the colors in video compressed with it? I have a work-around that involves messing with the video track settings using quicktime, but it prevents the clip from streaming. Any suggestions, Andrew?

Matt
June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:34 pm

a little off topic but that girl is beautiful

June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:54 pm

well don’t take my word for it or anything.. but I heard that Tahna is really Mark Jacob’s (the dorky Technology Officer of VCP) sister and that’s the only way he got the job was because the VCP team was trying to get with her and well.. looks like he is the Technology Officer after all right?! :-]

lol, good work Andrew “Dice Clay” Kramer

June 2nd, 2008 @ 5:57 pm

so we need the puppet tool to do some stuff and do we have it in AE 7 PRO?

June 2nd, 2008 @ 6:47 pm

I can’t believe I didn’t notice before, but you crossed the line!!! Aaargh!!!

June 2nd, 2008 @ 6:54 pm

When you know the rules, you can break them.

Consider these scenarios for breaking this rule:

1. When objects or actors are in motion
2. Introducing new geography

Breaking rules just to break them is not a good idea but in order to see Tahna’s reaction the rule was broken.

For all of you who have no idea what we are talking about check out a book called the 5 C’s of Cinematography. It’s and older book but the information is gold.

Hey ,
This message is for Sam…. I want to thank Sam for his contribution in making this tutorials…. I don’t know how many have thanked you, but i seriously think…. without you it would have not been possible… So thank you for being the innocent lab subject, always being used by Andrew for some experiment. And also i wish you luck and also a speedy recovery.. considering the fact that Andrew, this time got you hit by a car .

And Andrew, thanks a lot man for all the amazing dvds and tutorials…Love them…

Best of luck for the future.

June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:27 pm

ok let’s not play the critique game here.. for anyone who just watches VCP tutorials just because they look cool and doesn’t actually know anything about cinematography.. like myself, cough.. the 180 rule is just simply some weird obsessive compulsive law that characters should maintain their position respective to the viewer solely either on the left or the right of an imaginery (see what I mean) line that splits between the characters throughout the shot.. so when Toucan Sam leaves, Mark Jacob’s sister is on the right, but before she was on the left.. (ahhh, now you get it).. and this allegedly somehow disorients the viewer.. note that such ludicrous thinking is usually confided to people taking cinema classes and what not where they talk about senseless cinematography stuff.. I–just look at the pictures.. and if the book has no pictures–I close it.. ok, umm now if you really wanted to pick something out you might have wanted to say well wait a minute.. the velocity at which Mark’s sister was traveling towards the car, and the velocity at which Toucan Sam was flying to the right when hit did not match to the overly trained eye.. being that there was no change in her velocity (no time remapping) to match the apparent camera blur of T.S.’s movement.. which would thus indicate to you that a horizontal directional blur was applied.. it’s kind of like having multiple fps in the same shot.. and that doesn’t happen.. you can’t be at 24 fps and 50fps in the same shot at the same moment.. unless you are making a really cool movie.. which is what AK always does.. so therefore it is highly acceptable.. and besides.. the focus goes to Sam being hit by a car and so you don’t notice the little stuff; and was it just me that recognized that particular/ cc particle world was used for the metal sparks on the floor? and you know I also have a feel the wheels were directional blurred too? o well.. I, thank AK for all that he does.. imagine what kind of untamed forums, and late night IRC chat rooms we’d be on begging to learn AE when we have VCP.net.. I don’t know about you but VCP has saved me a ton of time, effort, and unnecessary stress–plus he has hot babes in his videos–keep it up!!

June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:31 pm

Just to be clear Tahna is not related to anyone that works with VC…

June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:37 pm

darn, it was just a rumor then.. thank you AK :-]!
and to note, my girlfriend wants me to tell you that
she thinks you are the most gorgeous guy ever
and if I didn’t say it she was going to kick me and
the laptop out of the house lol–yikes :-!

Justin Von Konsky
June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:40 pm

First time we have actually seen you guys talk…good choice of words.

Paul Siola
June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:48 pm

Tahna’s not related!? …Cool!…

Hey Jive T…i did notice the sparks at first but thought it was sparks from the tyres (which didn’t make sense) but before posting anything about it i reviewed it and saw that it was meant to seem as if it were coming from the impact from the front of the car. And then some trubulence was added to the particles to make it look like it was affected by the cars motion but that looked kinda weird…but the particles then kind of just dissappear…is it supposed to be the case?….i would expect it to bounce of the road and rest there….

But that’s all cool anyway…it looks totally rad…even for a VCP educated guy like me….

Paul Siola
June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:53 pm

Hey i forgot to ask, do we have to rotoscope Tahna in the scene…it kinda looks like another job again…but if it makes it realistic enough theeeeeeeen….sigh…whatever…bring it on…

June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:09 pm

now the only reason kicking me and the laptop out would be such a threat is that around our home when AK releases a new product the night before is like New Year’s Eve.. infact we call it New Release’s Eve and we gather around the fireplace, drink eggnog and even have a mistletoe.. now getting back to reality lol, we should have a VCP forum because this site is just the best site on the internet.. I would moderate if you let me Mr. Kramer.. for only 3 pence too sir.. but you’re right Paul S., AK can make anything look good.. he’s like one of those people that come up to you and tell you about e-commerce and Mcdonald’s and residual income–except he actually delivers LOL.. and btw.. I would definately wear like 98% of all the t-shirts that were submitted especially 3138, 3336, 3341, and like 1-3380.. personally my shirt would’ve said something like “wiggle(it,just a little bit)” or “come on, I wanna layer” or something funny like that but my goodness.. those shirts were just something else.. it just goes to show how great this site truly is.. oh, and I just checked and it does look like the particles are bouncing off the ground.. so I am assuming a floor was placed on the ground in particular and just set to bounce and the particles opacity/life keyframed over time.. or there could have just been a squirrel with a bucket of intergalactic space matter that was paid by VCP to throw them out of the car’s front bumper as AK shot the scene.. but I mean what do I know.. it could be just an effect :-$. and btw, VCP has a high amount of fans all over the world as you can tell since some posts look like they were translated.. gees, if AK keeps this up him and the team will be in Hollywood before they know it!!

lol. yeh – i hope to god that we’re roto’ing the car, not Sam..although i suspect both as Sam rotates a bit..also Tahna walks into the shot so thats more roto…anyone say ‘greenscreen’? :P would certainly make things a lot easier!

The Red One starts at about $17,000 just for the body. Add in the Lens, Powerpack, Hard drive, Monitor/LCD, etc and you are looking at a good $35,000. The lens alone is 6 or 7K. I’m sure my wife will let me finance one right away. In fact I’ll take two.

For those of you who wants too se the original “hit by car” clip, you can find it on the Reel.

Just go to “Contact” (at the top right) and then scroll down to just before the FAQs. There you can find the reel with a little promo featuring a bunch of clips, including the original hit by car clip, and i must say – this looks way lot better.
