Feel the Energy!

I’m happy to say I spent part of my Father’s Day designing some energy inside of After Effects without using Particular and only the built-in tools.

Watch Sample Video

This effect is easily scalable for creating small energy fields for a single human arriving from the future or a very large army of robots in disguise. I should be recording a tutorial very soon, so keep an eye out for it.

If you need something to do until judgment day, be sure to check out our Great Online Store we have lots of impressive DVDs for you, that won’t malfunction and try to kill you.

For the trolls:
Please don’t beg or ask when FREE tutorials will be ready…. I may be forced to send a robot to your house with orders to punch you in the face.

June 15th, 2008 @ 10:12 pm

Fantastic, this looks really cool. Can't wait to see the tut. Thank you so much for giving us your self taught information. Out of everyone out there you deserve far more than you receive. I've bought most of your dvd's and have to say that all of they are worth more than you charge for them.

Thank you Again
June 15th, 2008 @ 10:20 pm
wow! pretty awesome, Andrew :]
if u ask me, personally? for the surounding particles, id choose your other approach...more like this:

smaller particles...less 'paper'-looking...

Happy fathers day from me too!

I dont know how that person above didnt see that the particles flying around were papers. haha, the papers look great! Amazing that there isnt any particular or any third party plug-ins involved in that.

Keep up the good work.

And I know you get this a lot but, I really want to see some of your professional work!

If you can send a portfolio or something to me if you ever have time. I mean its just for curiosity so you don't have to but yeah.
Thanks for helping the after effects community so much! You are a Legend.

New site coming soon! and now an awesome new tutorial! either this is so cool i'm actually going to explode, or it's an elaborate ploy to distract from the T-Shirt contest????

awesome, looking absolutely wonderful, will wait for the tut.

June 16th, 2008 @ 6:29 am
I have a separate request which should be easy to do. Can you make all links (i.e. sample movies, links in the blog - even the links from the publics post- etc...) open in a new web page. I always close them out and then need to go and reopen your site again.
June 16th, 2008 @ 6:40 am
Andrew, i just tought of something that might be fun to do:

why dont you, everytime you think of a tutorial, post a sample of what you're gonna learn us a week prior to the release of the tutorial. then we can try to recreate the sample and see how creative we are ourselves. i think it would really add to the training. maybe you can make a seperate page where people show their re-creation of your sample?
June 16th, 2008 @ 6:48 am
I cant wait!!!!!!
June 16th, 2008 @ 6:53 am
Everyday I must be here!
This is A great web and job!
Welcome Andrew Kramer to china! Here is beautiful !
June 16th, 2008 @ 6:58 am

June 16th, 2008 @ 7:07 am
This looks very cool - in fact, I'm trying to do something similar to this right now for a project, so I look forward to your tutorial. Happy (belated) Father's Day! What are you doing working on Father's Day, anyway? You're a machine... That's what it is.
June 16th, 2008 @ 7:08 am
WOW very nice andrew. Even on father's day, you even have time to design. You are a truely magnificent guy. You are a dedicated person I ever seen and I am very inspired what you do. Someday I wanted to become like you.

BTW, send your robot to my house and will have a match. I can see it now, a final match me vs robot. aha!
Pete Valcanas
June 16th, 2008 @ 7:17 am
Nice effect! I think the paper flying around really makes the shot.

The only problem I have is after watching it I visualize myself standing up bare ass in the middle of New York city.

Looking forward to this one also!
June 16th, 2008 @ 7:21 am
Cool. Already thinking of an application where I can use this. In the meantime, does anyone know of a method or tutorial to add at least a semi-believable wind effect to a distant tree or two?
June 16th, 2008 @ 7:37 am
@BobH: maybe puppet tool?
June 16th, 2008 @ 7:54 am
Looks great!
Hehe, well how about if I beg for another paid DVD? :)
June 16th, 2008 @ 8:25 am
Nice.. I thought that looked really great and all the elements you would expect are in the shot and look completely believable. I can't wait to see this tutorial. Thanks Andrew!
June 16th, 2008 @ 8:26 am
Wow, I thought it was actual footage and not a photo! Can't wait to see how you did this!!!
June 16th, 2008 @ 8:42 am
of course it's a photo! the front cars are frozen :)
June 16th, 2008 @ 8:49 am
Looks really cool! I wonder how you did it... Have a few ideas, but nothing solid...
Also Andrew... Can you make me some cool sh*t, that I can give to the nice people over at MTV, so I can join their competition? I Guess you will say, yes (cuz your such a nice guy!), so I will thank you in advance. Thank you Andrew!

June 16th, 2008 @ 9:22 am
wow really nice effect! but a little demolition in the street would be great too ;)

June 16th, 2008 @ 9:25 am

Hello Andrew

You are just amazing. The video looks great. Can't wait to see the tutorial. Anyway, i think i would be a great idea to make more products on the 3d and AE integration like the bullet. I really want to learn Blender and i think you could make millions selling tutorial for it being an open source software and all, every one will want to learn how to use it. And you are a great teacher so trust me when i say, i'll be the first to bye them. Cool stuff.
Anyway best of luck and hope to see the new TUT soon. :^)
June 16th, 2008 @ 1:58 pm
Hey Andrew, I like it when you preview the upcoming tutorials because it gives me a chance to go in and try to create the effect on my own. Then of course I get you to show how to really do it!:)
June 16th, 2008 @ 2:20 pm
Did you flip the cone on purpose ? what i mean usualy tornedos are thin from the bottom and big on the top in this one you fliped it .
June 16th, 2008 @ 2:40 pm
Man, you guys have the wrong idea of NY. It's not dirty! Just 'cause there are roaches and rats running around in the sewer system doesn't mean it's dirty! lol

Pretty damn cool, man! Can't wait for this one. When will it be ready? Pleaaaaase! Pleeease!

WHACK! Ouch, I just got punched in the face by a robot.

For those looking for a great deal on Particular, digitaljuice.com has it for $150! Scroll down and look for the link Trapcode Unbundled. I've bought a lot of things from this website and have always been satisfied.

June 16th, 2008 @ 3:21 pm
On that topic, if you're a student, you can get some good deals on Trapcode stuff at Red Giant's site. I got the Trapcode "Reality Pack" for $250, which includes Particular, Form, Lux and Horizon. Pretty good deal in my book.

Not as good as $50 for Twitch... heh heh.
June 16th, 2008 @ 3:22 pm
nice, can't wait for the tutorial.... gonna make another short film soon, gonna use some of these tutorials for some help again...
Jack McKinney
June 16th, 2008 @ 3:25 pm
Am I the only person that consistently wonders how Andrew manages to cobble together FX shots that are superior to pretty much everything outside of top tier blockbuster movies (and he even shows them up occasionally). Seriously, I think about the FX on most TV series like Dr. Who or things like the Stargate series and I can't believe how much more natural and realistic his FX look. I understand that it's different when you are making a mockup shot that isn't part of a larger scene, but even so the fact that he made this using just the stock tools in AE is mystifying.

Why on earth he continues to cater to us mortals by delivering tutorials here on VC rather than starting his own FX house is beyond me, but I'm not going to question it. I'll just keep my mouth shut and hope he never realizes how talented he is.

Andrew, please disregard everything I just said. :)

Seriously, can't wait for the tutorial.
June 16th, 2008 @ 3:44 pm
I'm speechless
June 16th, 2008 @ 3:45 pm
That is the coolest thing I have seen you create yet Andrew!

The sound, the camera shake and the effect all work perfectly together.

Awesome work! BTW, I haven't seen those robots since I was a little kid... thanks, they bring back memories.

If you want to see some great robot effects, check out a few episodes of Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot.

Great stuff.
June 16th, 2008 @ 3:45 pm
I love you stuff... I just bout all your video packages.
June 16th, 2008 @ 5:48 pm
Pretty cool
I think I see some Polar Coordinates and Mr. Mercury there :P
Maybe u could add some light reflections on the cars that would be sweet
and a Time Traveler Sam of course :)

June 16th, 2008 @ 7:01 pm
You are amazing!!! holly smokes you have no clue how much your tutorials have helped me become a better video editor, and im currently working on a piece and this effect would be perfect!!!! :D

June 16th, 2008 @ 7:05 pm

June 16th, 2008 @ 7:48 pm
I wonder if Toys R Us is getting a lot of hits on that particular toy from videocopilot.net... ;).

Someone will be flipping through those stats in a week or so and think, "huh?", lol.
June 16th, 2008 @ 8:08 pm
Are you going to be teaching us how to do the circling papers as well? That's what I'm really excited about. I really like the swirling wind look.

I think its funny that people are trying to tell you how you could have done it better. Why don't you guys start you own websites and give away free info?

June 16th, 2008 @ 9:05 pm
Michael, I should buy you a coke. lol
June 16th, 2008 @ 9:12 pm

June 16th, 2008 @ 11:48 pm
Looks really good, looking forward to it!

Just a question, how much time do you spend on Video Copilot? I mean, making the DVD's, planing, creating tutorials and other jobs/clients (?). I mean, must go alot of time on to it.
June 17th, 2008 @ 12:17 am
I wonder why you dont create tutorials you put on you site and people have just to pay for. Make some free, yeah.

But also make tutorials which can buy for some bucks from visitors. DVD, yes fine. But some special tutorials you spend some more time, paypal and good. I would buy it. Maybe you think so too

Best greetings from Germany

PS: is this a free Wordpress style based design?
June 17th, 2008 @ 12:24 am
I think Video Copilot is clearly one of the greatest VFX resources right now. Andrew is doing awesome tutorials at an unbelievable pace.

That being said, these free tutorials do have a purpose. I'm sure they drive a ton of traffic to the website. If someone has some constructive input on how they feel it could be done better (in their opinion) I think everyone should be open to it.

And I'm not sure I agree with Andrew's business practice of calling potential customers "trolls".

I know, I know... get my own blog! hahaha
June 17th, 2008 @ 12:32 am
Jake, you must not come here very often... When you see a troll you'll know. Just keep your pants tucked into your socks and you should be fine. Glad to have you.
June 17th, 2008 @ 12:49 am
well,great effect

i think this was made with just fractal noise and cc sphere ,it 'll try it ,and if i get the same effect.i'll put a tutorial for it ,hahahaha
June 17th, 2008 @ 1:33 am
DAMN That's what I get for not clicking the TROLL link.

Sorry man. Thanks for the link. Keep up the great work.

By the way, I don't want to tuck my pants in my socks. My mom makes me do it. If I don't, my pants get stuck in my bicycle chain. I will be posting a tutorial on my blog soon to show people how to correctly apply the duct tape.
June 17th, 2008 @ 3:34 am
Andrew just a thanks for making the Bullet. It's really opened a lot of ideas for future projects of mine. Oh and I totally forgot about the Sam card and his sig. Kudos to you guys for producing effective products at extremely affordable prices. Total Training while filled with stuff is way over priced.

Thanks again and keep up the great work.

June 17th, 2008 @ 9:37 am
@ Lawrence,
Andrew has an Army of robots for that task :)
June 17th, 2008 @ 10:13 am
Andrew Kramer, you are to After Effects tutorials as my grandma is to apple pie! Except that your tutorials are never burnt and I'll always come back for seconds. Sorry g-ma. =/

Amazing work, though, as always. I was looking at ways to do a very similar effect so I'm eagerly awaiting this one. And *&#% the Trolls! I enjoy the wait.. it makes popping on here every half hour worth while when you see a blog/tutorial. I sometimes even do a little dance, but only a little one because I mustn't waste more time before watching the amazingness.

Aright, enough of that.

June 17th, 2008 @ 10:57 am
That is what i was looking for a long time. this is the kind of effects i need.

ty andrew
June 17th, 2008 @ 12:41 pm
This'll sure turn out quite interesting. I was trying to recreate an effect of this some time ago but miserably failed.
Did you somehow manage attaching an animated CC Glass pre-comp to a particle system? I'm sure watching this one! (Just like I did watch all the others ;-))

Looking at the effect, great job Andrew! Keep it up!

June 17th, 2008 @ 1:57 pm

Andrew, stuff's looking incredible as always man. Keep up the awesome work and thanks for sharing SO MUCH knowledge with us here on your website. I am grateful for these free tutorials, as I wouldn't be able to impress my friends so much without them ;) haha, kidding, but in all honesty, you've sent my post-production abilities through the roof!

Any day I see you've posted up another free tutorial, it's like the best Christmas ever. Wait... even better than a Christmas gift, because there's no occasion or reason that calls for a present, so it's extra special! Like when we come home and suprize our wives with flowers or a little something just because of our love. Awww, thanks Andrew, I feel loved.

Dear Andrew,
I hate you. Since I've seen Energy I've been trying to duplicate it before you release the tutorial. I'm thinking CC FOAM and definitely one of the Particle effects, a GLOW is a must. Damn You. Damn You all to Hell! I can't go to sleep until I crack this mystery! Poopy.
I'm waiting for that robot.....

Dear Andrew,

I have recently bought your entire collection DVD volume! I simply love your DVDs and those are one of the best tutorials I've had in my life. I am curious to see this tutorial when it will be available! Please guide me how to do the following kind of super jump effects in AE:

or better one:
watch from sec. 16 - 20 in the clip when Blade makes an awesome landing jump with the earthshaking effect:

OK, i have to try and guess what were going to be doing cause i think i may have figured out at least the paper part of this.i think were going to make a comp with a white solid and then use that "CC fold" effect (or one of those CC effects). next, were going to put this in to the CC particle world. might be right, might be wrong. just had to guess : )
June 24th, 2008 @ 3:20 am
I have already prepared a nice camera shot special for this effect ;)
June 24th, 2008 @ 3:49 am

Simply amazing. I've wondered how to do energy based effects, and psychic Andrew comes along with his X-Men powers. If you find the time to show how to do an energy wave as well (circular), that would be wonderful.

I study Muay Thai.

If sending robots become too expensive, you can send me to punch people in the face.

Besides that, thanks for the tutorials. Found your site about 2 days ago. Learned more AE in the past two days than I have for the past month.

*high five*
June 26th, 2008 @ 1:45 am
i know you told us not to beg! but i will take a punch to the face from a robot! as long its no robot like the terminator! maybe there is a little chance to get a lil information when the tutorial is online....i know, i know, im sorry for asking but i´m working on a short movie right now, where i must create exactly a effect like this! but i think this is my problem...;)
ok, you got my adress...just waiting for the robots! i´m prepared...i got a super soaker!
Thx alot andrew, and the team of course!

greetings from berlin

I cant wait for this. I just made a superhero clip, 47 seconds long, this would have been perfect for the hero arriving! But I would need a time machine to see the tutorial, so I used fire instead haaaa.

Great tutorials Mr Kramer! Uhmm, could you send a robot to my house? not to punch me in the face, just to hang out with!

Cant wait to see more. A pleasure as always, my man.

Take it easy.
June 26th, 2008 @ 1:24 pm
Hey Andrew,

Damn that energy thing so freaking awesome!
And umh... when do you get a new tutorial?
Nah just kidding :P I dont want to get a robot from toyrs r us to my house :'(
Keep up the good work.

June 27th, 2008 @ 5:59 am

This Is UnBelieveable.

And I Read Up The Page That This Is An Image Aswell.
Very Nifty.
Can't Wait For This Tut.

Plus The Paper Effects Is Wicked.

Keep Up The Good Work

June 27th, 2008 @ 6:32 am
Cant wait for this. First thing I do every morning is quickly check to see if there is a tutorial yet.
June 30th, 2008 @ 10:10 am
I keep checking for this tutorial... I noticed in the center the way you made the movement and it kinda looks like a tornado. So when you show us how to do it I am going to concentrate on that motion and put it in some outside footage by my house to make a cool looking tornado.. not to mention adding the flying paper will make it look real, and of course some of your famous camera shake! Thanks can’t wait! :)

Awesome look! I've used the swirling paper look a couple times haha.
