DVD or Download?

UPDATE: I think we have reached a more specific solution. The DVD & Download will be available to purchase on May 20th, we will simply delay the downloadable files until the morning of the 22nd which should make a big difference. Sam will still be signing Cards for 1 week or so.

After the 22nd, customers can choose a DVD, digital download or download the product while waiting for their DVD as usual.

With the very exciting launch of our new Training DVD “The Bullet” on the horizon, we have been considering the best method for delivery. As many of you know, most of our products are available on DVD and they can also be downloaded, however we are going to try something new this time around.

The new training product will be available on DVD only for the initial launch, we will then launch the availability of a full downloadable version shortly thereafter. (It is not clear at this time when but as soon as we can we will. Less than a week.)

What it comes down to is bandwidth and the overall speed of our site, we have had some heavy server loads in the past on launch days that make the site difficult to maneuver. So by offering this product as DVD for the first week or so will hopefully alleviate the initial bottleneck of downloaders.

As a bonus for the initial DVD launch, (or downside depending on how you see it) Sam Loya is going to include a personally signed Video Copilot card that will be included with every order. I asked him and he said “Sure, why not.” What a guy. Sam is seriously your biggest fan

Wow, sounds great, i would prefer DVD as i like collecting things!

PS First Comment!
May 9th, 2008 @ 1:56 am
Well, for those of us who live across the ocean, download option is better.
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:02 am
Awesome. I like Sam Signatures.
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:04 am
A previously worn Sam underwear would have been a better idea.

Just kidding! ;)

I think I will be your client again for this nice DVD!

Keep up the good work,

May 9th, 2008 @ 2:04 am
OK, but we save the planet with the downloads instead of burning DVDs+transports, so it's important !
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:07 am
Our international customers are very important to us and we will try to make the download available ASAP after the DVD launch.
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:09 am
download for me please Andrew! scotland here! that way no customs duty!
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:18 am
I prefer download Version too. I like the DVD but im from Germany and hard to deliver.
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:22 am
DVD PLEASE WOO HOO..........................
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:22 am
gutted - no point in ordering the dvd if you live outside the US - by the time it comes you can just download it and save on custom duty! Oh well, i guess international users will just have to wait longer then if you live in the US.
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:28 am
As an european customer I prefer download version.

Good Job Andrew, keep going on
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:32 am
i agree with COMEDIANTE, the download option is better for the european VCopilot fans. but it would be nice to get a VCcard signed by sam, too... maybe it´s time for a Vcopilot chain store in europe ;-)
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:15 am
Hey Andrew, How about pre-orders for the DVD?
Keep up the good work!
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:32 am
I am really excited about this DVD, this is the kind of thing I've been wanting to learn how to do for a while. Interesting discussion about the choice of mediums. personally I think its a good idea to offer the DVD first, but whoever said our respective opinions would make a difference?

@ Paul: Surely all is fair as postage from US to US will take time too? Its a big place.
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:39 am
hey, why not use amazon s3 for downloads, it wont effect the bandwith of the site overall and its cheap considering you pay only for what you use! i know a few other sites that use s3 for images and downloadable files. at first
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:41 am
Well I'm from switzerland and the DVDs came always after a week. I never had problems. So I will order a DVD.
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:45 am
Hey andrew,
i am not joking, but i live in india, so i was planning to order the DVD,will you be able to ship it? and do i have to sell my mother to pay for the customs? i know your having trouble with the download thing,so please, try to make it available for download as soon as you can..thank you..By the way, your an awesome teacher..
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:53 am
DVD ordering to Ireland takes about a week, plus if Sam's signing stuff then there's no question what I'll be getting!!
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:53 am
Mr. Kramer,
Will you offer a next day shipping. I'm with the USCG and will be deploying for 3 months at sea on the 23rd of May. I would love to have the DVD in time to use it for morale short films while underway. Thanks for your tutorials and products. They have served us well.
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:03 am
Andrew, For US customers, Will there be a rebate for the download version to account for lower production costs and lack of hard support ?
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:11 am
I understand why technically you need to postpone the downloads. Have you tought of maybe advancing the purchase date instead. A lot of us would pre-purchase the DVD a week in advance knowing that shipment or downloads would be available on the 20th.

Just a thought.

May 9th, 2008 @ 4:17 am
I would love to have my little 'Video Copilot' section in the DVD cabinet but living in Australia makes it just to hard with shipping. :(

But hey, at least I still get the product. ;)
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:35 am
WOOHOO SWEET! Man I cannot wait to see it. (you sure know how to build that suspense..hehe)
Scott Bishop
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:43 am
Im from the UK, and have always bought the DVD's. I've never seen any problem with postage or delivery times from the US. Its only a couple a quid, and items always get here by atleast the 5th day by Parcelforce, which is better delivery times than the stupid Royal Mail!
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:45 am
This is gonna be another "Best Seller" at VC :) Looking forward to the release.
It's worth waiting a week of shipement to get the Sam Limited Signed Card Gold Edition ^^

May 9th, 2008 @ 4:47 am
Hey Andrew: thank you very much and greetings from Spain.
I have a question for you, do you think Lakers can win the ring with his brand new center Pau?
Mark Falkingham
May 9th, 2008 @ 5:09 am
I think having both options of DVD and download open to all is a very good idea although I must say, I live in the U.K and have bought a videocopoilet dvd in the past and never had to pay extra duty or tax on it. I hope in the future you will look into the possibility of pre ordering products. that would be cool

love your work
May 9th, 2008 @ 6:19 am
Sweet. UK here and I shall be downloading as soon as possible. This means I have excatly 1 week (as long as it is available on the 22nd) to complete the tutorial and include it in my degree final major piece.

May 9th, 2008 @ 6:33 am
@Ben; what are you talking about mate? I too live in Aus, and have NO Troubles at all buying VCP products and getting them shipped here. It's too easy, you know why? Because the team at VCP do ALL the work, we just sit back and relax.

Put me down for another DVD, it will add to the growing VCP DVD's on my shelf
May 9th, 2008 @ 6:35 am
Download please!
May 9th, 2008 @ 6:50 am
This is what i love about your work! NO EXCUSES!
Still can´t wait!

Greetings from Berlin!

May 9th, 2008 @ 6:53 am
Please Andrew fast! I am from Germany and the DVD will take to much time to send.
May 9th, 2008 @ 7:45 am

Besides, I cant wait more

ADEMAS no puedo esperar MAS
May 9th, 2008 @ 7:51 am
He, two other guys from WM-Country No. 1 ;-)
Schön hier noch mehr von hier zu sehen - hoffentlich geht das Verschicken schnell!

I need this DVD, I need it :-)

May 9th, 2008 @ 7:54 am
ici la France.

I agree with Comediante to, the download option is much better for the european Videocopilot customers. But... but... it would be nice to get a Card signed by Sam.

keep going on, Master Andrew

May 9th, 2008 @ 7:56 am
Hi Andrew,

where is the buy button ?

May 9th, 2008 @ 8:06 am
Hello Andrew

DvD Please

Jim Crown
May 9th, 2008 @ 8:10 am
Hey, Andrew. I was just wondering: are there any plug-ins that we need to buy to create this bullet effect? Or is it all in After Effects and the 3D programs? Thanks.
May 9th, 2008 @ 8:17 am
May 9th, 2008 @ 8:19 am
--- When can we watch the trailer?
May 9th, 2008 @ 8:58 am

Can we pre-order?
May 9th, 2008 @ 10:04 am
And how's the pricing of the DVD?
Travis O’Donnell
May 9th, 2008 @ 10:10 am
Andrew why weren't you mentioned in the bible?

"One day thy shall rise again" - Andrew Kramer aka Jesus :P

Any notice on pricing?
May 9th, 2008 @ 10:42 am
I know I won't be popular for this, but why not confirm immediately when a download order comes in - but stagger the download instructions in a later email, that way if you get 1000 download orders in a day, you can send download instructions to the first 250, then the next day the next 250 then the next day the next 250, etc. etc. ...We'd just have to wait in line a bit.

of course the numbers are hypothetical, I know you will sell many millions on the first day ;-)

Just an idea.
Dustin James
May 9th, 2008 @ 10:46 am
I'm getting so excited!! I think that selling the DVD will help the overload on servers... I will be purchasing the DVD!

is it going to be like the other Training DVD as in it is based off of a complete Flash menu? or like more recent products where they are Flash in a web browser? not that it matters either way..

where do you get your DVD's printed and cases printed?
May 9th, 2008 @ 10:49 am
oh shit, not earning otherwise would have buyed this awesome DVD, Anyways will buy n enjoy later when I start earning.

Till then Free tuts are the only thing I can enjoy.

Gr8 DVD & Gr8 IDEA. AK. RoX

Keep Rokin - Sandy
May 9th, 2008 @ 10:55 am
you should include some behind the scenes stuff on this dvd , just s thought
good things happen for those who waits:) another dvd to my collections uhra
May 9th, 2008 @ 11:24 am
Between some of the t-shirt designs and now this, I'm really tripping out on the whole Sam thing.

No offense to Sam but I would have preferred one of the Hawaiian Tropic girls in a bikini.
May 9th, 2008 @ 11:43 am
Cool , Looking forward to get the DVD!!
May 9th, 2008 @ 12:14 pm
I prefer the DVD because I aways loose my downloads because I'll forget to back them up or whatever.. And I just like to collect them. :)
May 9th, 2008 @ 12:14 pm
Oh! But I'll prolly still download it while I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail.
May 9th, 2008 @ 12:16 pm
oh ^.^
Nice NEWS.!!!
PLZ make Download version available ASAP.

May 9th, 2008 @ 1:39 pm
I don't mind the download if you provide a .jpg of the jacket cover and DVD, this way I can print my own when I save the files!

May 9th, 2008 @ 1:59 pm
I agree with Peter. though I like the REAL copy of the dvd sleeve cover.. you know. Straight from Video Copilot! It's just not the same if you have to print it yourself.
May 9th, 2008 @ 2:01 pm
To each his own.
May 9th, 2008 @ 3:32 pm
I haven't read through a lot of the comments. I know for a fact my school wont purchase these as reference if they are download only. They also wont be purchasing them day one because it take a while before budgets are made for the following quarter.

I think you'll be missing on a big demographic if you limit it to DL only in time.
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:03 pm
I'd love the dvd version (sam is so nice!!), but I'm from italy...is there any problem?because these comments are confusing... :( btw I don't need it here the day after the launch..
May 9th, 2008 @ 4:45 pm
Hey Mark,
It is not going to be download-only, it is a delayed download option for those who need it.

A DVD will always be available and we recommend it too.
May 9th, 2008 @ 5:13 pm
Sam Loya rules! keep it up! He is a moviestar!
May 9th, 2008 @ 5:17 pm
I'm gonna buy this DVD because Sam RULES!

ps: I have a friend that looks like Sam so I call him Sam everytime I meet him:P
May 9th, 2008 @ 6:17 pm
I think I misunderstood! I would rather have the original dvd and artwork rather than print my own. I thought the dvd would be limited and wasn't sure if my budget, I'm unemployed, would allow me to purchase on first release. Thanks for clearing that up Andrew!

May 9th, 2008 @ 6:49 pm
As long as the overall launch isn't delayed, I'll be happy.
May 9th, 2008 @ 7:03 pm
How much is the DVD going to be?
May 9th, 2008 @ 8:28 pm
This would have to be THE BEST Tutorial site on the web, with so many great products to help all of us wether Novice or Expert alike.
Living in Australia is sometimes a bummer when it comes to purchasing items from over seas but Video Co-Pilot has come through with its great service.. for me Its worth the wait for the DVD to come in the mail it just makes watching all those tips and tricks and great Tutorials all the more worth it...
Please Andrew keep up the great work with out you we would all be lost in the maze of the AE world.

Dale Ficken
May 9th, 2008 @ 8:54 pm
So just to be clear...

Is this only for the advanced training tutorial or will you also be offerring the "tutorial consolidation dvd" that lumps all your previous posted tutorials?

Also... I am assuming the signed cards will only be offered to people buying the DVD for that 1st week? Or just until they run out?

Last... I agree a pre-order option would be great... either which way, my credit card is standing by :)

May 10th, 2008 @ 1:28 am
ok,ok so.......

HOW MUCH ???????

please tell me the price andrew !!!
Marco Domingues
May 10th, 2008 @ 2:39 am
Hi, Andrew i would like to discuss something with you related to VideoCopilot, it will be interesting to you so if you could (lets see :P) answer me or send me an email i've tried to send you one but you never answered.

May 10th, 2008 @ 3:57 am
Can't WAIT!!!! good to get a DVD cuz I keep buying hard drives for all the Video Co-Pilot downloads.
May 10th, 2008 @ 6:53 am
Is the Advanced Training DVD only gonna be based on the Bullet tutorial? Or will it have some other stuff as well?

P.S. The Bullet is enough to make me want to get the DVD anyway :)
May 10th, 2008 @ 7:04 am
As Andrew told us in the former blog-entry, you will also learn everything you need to know about implementing your 3D-work into After Effects.
And much more :)
May 10th, 2008 @ 8:26 am
cant wait for this!

May 10th, 2008 @ 11:25 am
I want a singed Sam Loya card ;_; Sam is my hero, but sadly I don't have a job, so no money to buy it T_T
Mr. Straws
May 10th, 2008 @ 12:23 pm
Does this mean there's going to be a shortage of DVDs, with people rushing to buy knowing they only have a week?
May 10th, 2008 @ 12:30 pm
I would prefere the DVD cause it's a honor to have it in your collection :) It's something you could brag about! Love you <3
May 10th, 2008 @ 6:18 pm
I would like to get my hands on the dvd aswel just so I have it. But sounds like a good plan.
May 10th, 2008 @ 10:26 pm
hi,Andrew i just wanna thank u for all your hard work.
quick question how much is the dvd option and how much is the download option,
i think the download option should be a bit cheaper
May 11th, 2008 @ 2:31 am
The download option is cheaper, no shipping charge.
May 11th, 2008 @ 2:44 am
I´m from Sevilla, Spain.how I can obtain dvd. By downloading or buying it
Paul Siola
May 11th, 2008 @ 3:08 am
Papua New Guinea has no Broadband type internet so we're stuck with the cost of DVD purchasing. I would've appreciated it if Twitch was also on DVD. Is it possible to have a speacial one-off DVD for people in my situation? By the way, great products Andrew. Only wish there were faster internet connections here in the Third World...=(

The tips learnt fromVCP really puts people like us on the map in this country.
May 11th, 2008 @ 5:32 am
Of course, you actually need a DVD version of Twitch please email our support staff and we can arrange a copy.
May 11th, 2008 @ 7:00 am
The support did not answered my question for paying from Germany yet :-/
May 11th, 2008 @ 12:25 pm
I'm not sure what your question was but maybe this will help:

May 12th, 2008 @ 3:18 am
I already looked up there, but I have to pay through PayPal WITHOUT credt card (because I don't have one). But my PayPal is directly connected to my bank-account - when I pay in eBay, it's directly there.
But I don't know if this will work.

But thanks indeed :-)
May 12th, 2008 @ 8:29 am
May 27th, 2008 @ 12:48 pm
Hi Andrew,

First congratulations for the Bullet DVD, you keep pushing the limits. Speaking of Limits have you ever tried to run Adobe After effects on a VPC from an external Hard drive. Is there any sort of limitations ?

Let me know. Thanks.

Joshua Carey
May 30th, 2008 @ 7:30 am
I have to have some of the most rotten luck, not only did I not get a signed Sam Card, but my computer crashed before I could finish my other shirt entries >< oh well, maybe I'll get lucky and find his card on eBay. o.o
