Advanced Training DVD

Just thought I would let you know that this month we have been working on a new advanced training DVD. We want to focus on large scale visual effects that can not be demonstrated in a short 20-30 minute tutorial. Should be a lot of fun. We are still figuring out the ideas, but here is a quick sneak preview of the content from the first DVD in the new series. It takes place in front of Sam’s new residence :)

In Other News:
Twitch is almost ready to be released we are finalizing the features and extra content. The Video Copilot Series One Tutorial DVD is also now completed but we want to release it with Twitch. I should have another new tutorial online this week as well. I’ll also blog about it some more ground-breaking techniques used for the video above. (No 3D motion tracking required!)

Remember this website is made possible by our dedicated customers who buy our great DVDs so be sure to check them out today!

PS, this clip was inspired by the trailer for the film Wanted.

Very cool Andrew!!! why didn’t you used the matrix effect rather than the smooth effect for the bullet’s trail? or that’s how t was done in the movie ‘Wanted’ ?

    March 30th, 2011 @ 3:56 am

I could figure it all out except the streak behind the bullet. How did you do that part?

looks great BUT what about the recoil of the gun it looks like you animated a toy guy (and you did) the action seems to have no effect on sams hand – no one cand shoot without even a little movement. hope you will fix this by the final relese – other then that it looks greate (like i said) and cant wait to see what you come up with in the dvd

Looing forwardt to the advanced training DVD and of course Twitch)

Thorsten

February 17th, 2008 @ 12:51 am

Well if we want to get overly technical… which I know we love to do on the internet :)

In order to see a bullet flying out the chamber at such slow motion, the camera would have to be so fast, that the recoil would not yet have occurred. This is why, as long as you are steady when you pull the trigger, the bullet will hit the intended target. The bullet is long gone before you feel the recoil.

Of course this would be even easier to do digitally because you don’t need to animate the action or the shell ejecting. However that wouldn’t be nearly as fun.

Check out this video to see a Glock firing at super slow motion but still the bullet can only be seen as a flash for one or two frames but the shell and slide action are easy to see because they happen much slower and much later.

February 17th, 2008 @ 2:05 am

looks so nice,support u!

Janx
February 17th, 2008 @ 2:09 am

Yup you’re right Andrew the bullet isn’t indeed timed with the recoil as to what I believed since the Matrix came out but as you’ve “that wouldn’t be nearly as fun”. I guess that would be fun if it had a recoil. :)

But anyway, may I humbly ask sir Andrew what type of camera were you using to shot that scene? :)

Eliot
February 17th, 2008 @ 2:11 am

yess…YESS…YYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! man, this looks AWESOME! I’ve been waiting for something this trendy to come along for ages! Not that ur free stuff isn’t good and all, its the BEST (the best things in life are free…sometimes) but this looks SWEET! Can’t wait!

YEW!!

February 17th, 2008 @ 2:12 am

I used a JVC HD 200. I also used a cinema adapter and real PL mounted cinema lens at a focal length of 50mm. Not a regular photography lens btw…

Eliot
February 17th, 2008 @ 2:13 am

As you can tell just from the massive list of similar posts above, there are many effects junkies (including myself) practically having an orgasm over this effect (well, actually, im not but the other guys… ahem) so, yeah. this shall be a good product i reckon!

Alexandr
February 17th, 2008 @ 2:16 am

Fine Andrey!!! You as always have surpassed yourself!! However it would be desirable to specify some defects! 1. The bullet from a trunk in the present pistol takes off much earlier than the shutter departs and the sleeve is thrown out! 2. The bullet rotates on a circle of the axis much more quickly. 3. The bullet in your lesson flies not exactly concerning a trunk of a pistol! Yours faithfully!

February 17th, 2008 @ 2:53 am

sorry Ak & VCP, I must say it’s a tad “old skool” and boring (the promo that is, I’m sure the product itself rocks!) It “wreaks” The Matrix, and as much as most begginers or kids will love it, I know you guys can produce alot better than this… again, sorry! :(

Hi Andrew ^^

This video is simply…AMAZING…
Holy Carp xD

I’ve got a question. What sort of studies have you choose to learn that ?
A specific school or have you learn everything with the net and your experience ?
I’me very interested by that.

Ah, huh, do you use the same camera for all your videos ?

Thanks,

Baloo

PS: Don’t be afraid by my english ^^ I’m a french student and i’m not very good

awesome. Only thing I could think of, that it looks like ur gonna need a 3D app to make the bullet with tougness and HDRI reflections.. Other than that, this will be 10x more cool than the Demonic tutorial and Riot Gear!

You are my hero. Can’t wait to sit down and play with this one. Oh, and stop whining about Sam’s arm not jerking from the recoil and suggesting it need be fixed in post before the release of the tutorial. Anyone who’s seen any of your tutorials knows Sam Loya pretty much does these for beer & pizza, yet somehow he pulls it off.
Also, just to be a hypocrite, Sam didn’t pull the trigger very convincingly. :-)

Well i can see that someone is really enjoying their 35mm adapter!! Is that a spinning GG or vibrating GG? I’ve been building one of each using the redrock DIY kit and Daniel Schweinert’s tutorials, and ive found that the vibrating GG works alot better and is alor more light weight lol.

P.S. That shot is cool lol.

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:50 am

Wow just what i was looking for. WIll look amazing cant wait. :)

February 17th, 2008 @ 7:28 am

very cool video,

the only thing I can add: I am not sure about the hole on the front side of a bullet, it looks cool, but wouldn’t it reduce the speed of a bullet because of an air going in to the head part of it? but overall, very cool Andrew, keep up a good work!

I’m really hoping it will have the bridge and your 3D Video Copilot text breaking apart. I have been looking everywhere for a maxscript that will break up an object like that. Could you shed a little light how you created the fragments?

By the way, have you used the RayFire Tool at all? I just downloaded the demo yesterday and it looks very cool.

Hi, this may sound stupid, but how do you import .avi in to after effects, because every time I try it says- invalid file format, I’ve tried using a converter to .mov, but I loose a load of quality when I do that.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

February 17th, 2008 @ 8:38 am

You probably projected your footage on a wall in a 3d package, extended the scene so that you can pan your camera in 3d space and still see a background. And maybe you exported it as RPF again for some After Effects editing. Am I right?

Victor
February 17th, 2008 @ 10:52 am

Frickin awesome!!!!

I was hoping you would make advanced tutorial like this, inspired from the latest Hollywood blockbuster SFX, although some people say this video is not as realistic but I think you pretty much did a good job and we can make different kinds of creativity or add more elements from your tutorial.

can we do slow motion shot like this with a consumer camcorder and timemap it in AE ? will it look good enough?

I just saw the movie Jumper, can you please make a tutorial of the teleporting effects in this movie, you can also add it in this tutorial DVD or put it in VCP.

I’m hoping you would also include other elements in this tutorial DVD such as 3DMax integration, camera and shooting techniques, also other movie making tips n tricks. Hey that’s what advance is all about, right?

Once again, Thank you …

Looks great! And I dont just mean the effect, very filmic, What camera are you shooting with andrew? Was is shot with a fast shutter or done in post? And is there anywhere we could see some of your films?

February 17th, 2008 @ 11:28 am

*picks jaw off the floor*

THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!

Seriously, I would pay good money to have something like that in my films…

February 17th, 2008 @ 11:30 am

Holy cow. If you teach me how to make this in your new dvd, i will buy it. For sure. It will also look great with some of your other products i bought :)

Im assuming you made this in 3ds max? i really hope you come out with some more tutorials for max………

Victor
February 17th, 2008 @ 11:34 am

Hey Moca MX,
You’re video is actually quite good, just like in Jumper… good job!

Homer
February 17th, 2008 @ 11:59 am

WOW Andrew, you have no idea how long I have been looking for and wanting to do a bullet time effect like that!!! Since you doing a whole dvd instead of a tutorial on the site could you please let us know if all these effects involve after effects and not any 3d program (like 3dsmax) and without any trapcode effects either?

THANK YOU so much ANDREW and VIDEOCOPILOT guys!!!

Caleb
February 17th, 2008 @ 12:20 pm

Holy Crap! That is AWESOME! Can’t wait for the DVD.

Andrew
February 17th, 2008 @ 12:26 pm

this looks like one of those techniques that we’ve all dreamed about doing but failed miserably. great job!

any idea how much the advanced training dvd will cost?

February 17th, 2008 @ 12:48 pm

Very impressive effect Andrew, I especailly appreciate your eye for detail, heat distortion from the muzzle cloud, slow spin on the bullet, slight flash on Sam’s face, etc. etc. etc. Looks like I am going to have to learn 3dsMax after all now ;-) I hope you can cram it all into 30 minutes. It’s a shame when an affect is on a final but has to be left out due to time. …still from youor HD example .mov’s it’s not hard to figure them out later.

You are my Robert Rodriguez of post production (a pure inspiration) …or was it the other way around? Oh well, you are in good company in my mind.

Jeff

Kevin
February 17th, 2008 @ 1:13 pm

Wow that looks awesome! I don’t quite understand the guy who said this was lame…
I suppose this takes some camera handling skill as well though..

The only thing i didn’t like was the fact that his hand stayed perfectly still instead of kicking up from the recoil.

February 17th, 2008 @ 1:26 pm

ohh my god ya thats what we been waiting for you got me on this one .finally you got all my attention boss. thank you thank you.

February 17th, 2008 @ 1:34 pm

wow thats awesome!! maybe give it more spin, would look more impressive!!! but it looks really awesome, cant wait for this!! ;)

so far, after-effects-guru, keep on rockin!!

Earlack
February 17th, 2008 @ 1:38 pm

Mmmm… Holy Carp ! Looks like we’re all gonna need a “Twitch+Advanced training DVD” Bundle :D

But, I think there’s just a little too much smoke for my taste, but hey, that’s my opinion. Good to see that Sam finally stopped being depressed by the effects you were applying on him :P *Sam Strikes Back*

Oh, but, even if it’s great, I bet the DVD won’t be just about this sequence, right ? So, I’m waiting for more infos about the content.

Cheers from France

February 17th, 2008 @ 1:38 pm

is it all in after effects or we need someother programs to do this just tell me cuase am shaking right now.

February 17th, 2008 @ 1:54 pm

I was watching frame by frame ,what kind a gun you used .cuase for many resons
1-sam didnt move his finger too much to fire it
2 the barrel hole is clear as a real one or blank gun
3 and most important the shell ejecting is so perfect that its realy coming out of the chamber.
4 did you use a real image of a bullet head as a refferance cuase its perfect.
I love it ,I was waiting for this since last year if you remember.you just got 5 customers wanting to buy your dvds refered by me .they were living in a cave.

Jim Andrews
February 17th, 2008 @ 2:05 pm

Very, Very Nicely Done!
Andrew you never stop amazing me, And I’m not easily amazed

Great Job!

February 17th, 2008 @ 2:17 pm

I need that effect man, it looks awesome

February 17th, 2008 @ 2:17 pm

what makes andrews tutorials great is the way he pays attention to details.
as you see he didnt just reflected the light on sams face but you can see the light inside sams eyeball and thats my friend is talent and hard work. sorry iam posting again its just every time you watch you learn how to value videocopilot.
Do you think i can pull off a shot like this with the XL2 to get that quality.

Zachary
February 17th, 2008 @ 2:42 pm

Cool will you be useing 3D tracking such as boujou 4 and 3Ds max? cant wait to see what you have in store thanks.

February 17th, 2008 @ 2:48 pm

February 17th, 2008 @ 3:08 pm

I’ll take 3. I don’t care what it costs. If I don’t have enough money I’ll steal a credit card or rob a bank or do a backflip in an Audi, whatever it takes to get that training DVD!

PS – can you teach us how to do that?

Denis
February 17th, 2008 @ 3:13 pm

Awesome! Can’t wait! :)

Andrew, by the way, looks like the good men and women from Jumper made use of your Earth Zoom tutorial in their World Premiere trailer. Its at about 2 minutes and 14 seconds in.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=9rz5NekSUTM

February 17th, 2008 @ 3:14 pm

No 3D tracking used. The only element done in a 3D program is the bullet. And because it is a DVD for sale, we’ll also include the 3D step for both 3D max and Cinema 4D.

February 17th, 2008 @ 3:36 pm

This is not Carp

February 17th, 2008 @ 3:49 pm

WOOOWW!! this is the first time iv posted here, and what a time to post! Awsome stuff Andrew.

just wondering, what types of cameras do you use to record your footage?
it always looks soo great…

February 17th, 2008 @ 4:01 pm

Honestly, my favorite part is the lighting of Sam’s face on the muzzle flash and the slight hint of reflection in his eyes. It’s the little things that count!!

February 17th, 2008 @ 4:07 pm

It’s really cool for no 3D tracking. I’ll be buying Twitch with the tutorial DVD’s the day it comes out. Hopefully it’s soon though.

February 17th, 2008 @ 4:17 pm

OOOOOOOOo so so sweet I didnt know you could change the dumpsters COLORS!!
Man i cant wait till i change mine.. This tutorial is gonna be the BOMB!

February 17th, 2008 @ 4:17 pm

andrew beside after effects and your dvd what else i need to make this happen?
like this i know a head of time

John Paite
February 17th, 2008 @ 4:42 pm

Please make it affordable like us who are just students doing it out of pure passion and not for professional benefits. Gotta work double shift to pay for this dvd !!

February 17th, 2008 @ 4:51 pm

Holy Smoke!! now this is called VFX

Kevin
February 17th, 2008 @ 5:18 pm

Clancy30 its a fake gun i’m pretty sure…probably just an airsoft gun. Maybe a gas blowback airsoft gun so the blowback would already be there.
Haven’t looked at the video recently but i’d guess it was a USP or maybe a Glock of some sort.

T Clark
February 17th, 2008 @ 5:18 pm

Hey Andrew. I was excited to see this tutorial. I remeber sending you this for an idea a long time ago. I am glad you got to it! Thanks!

February 17th, 2008 @ 5:31 pm

wow wow wow Andrew you have to warn us before you show us stuff like this!

Judge Judy
February 17th, 2008 @ 5:39 pm

Superbkriz
February 17th, 2008 @ 5:55 pm

Andrew, you surprise us all once again with all those Hollywood style visual effects. Once again, I wish I had a time machine and buy the DVD now from the future. Awesome!

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:20 pm

Kevin how are you ,
the reson i asked about the gun is becuase .
1 if you pay close attention to the gun when its fired there wasnt enough recoil
it didnt go all the way back so i thought its an ilusion one of andrews tricks if you watch the recoil in the old indy tino tutorial.
2 if it was an airsoft you would see the small cuper bb barrel .and remember andrew said you have to keep this shot steady as so i dont think there was a real recoil at all airsoft or real .i think its all andrews best tricks to make the gun looks like been fired using real knowledge of gun handling. cuase i was born with guns. i still love it .

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:28 pm

and by the way thats a SIG SAUER MAYBE A P239

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:43 pm

It is a Sig P229 40 cal. This particular gun is real but I don’t’ recommend using real guns. It is just hard to find replicas for cheap of this one.

Obviously we didn’t shoot the gun so the slide action is done in AE which was quite tricky because of the angle. Oh and I mis-spoke the bullet and the shell are the only things created in a 3D program. I forgot about the shell because it was a last minute addition.

We may even include the steps for creating the bullet and shell in a free 3D program as well, perhaps Blender. This way all you need is After Effects. Also if there are any Blender EXPERTS here, please email me at andrew (at) videocopilot.net

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:51 pm

so you mean with the dvd all we need is after effects .the bullet and the shell is ready to drop in like the roit gear elemnts . i hope so.

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:55 pm

The elements of course will be included for this specific shot, but to do it with your own footage you will be taught the steps needed to complete your own shot.

If you don’t want a hollow-point bullet you would want to make it yourself.

February 17th, 2008 @ 6:59 pm

i want hollow point that thing looked real iam telling you .i freezed the frame and looked at it for good 20 mins.

February 17th, 2008 @ 7:15 pm

Dam Drew, thats bad-ass! when are gonna totally make your own shortfilm?

Josh Johnson
February 17th, 2008 @ 7:35 pm

That would be awesome if you included tut on creating the elemens in C4D and Max. Looking foward to it Andrew. Hey andrew have you used letus 35 adapter at all?

Shock
February 17th, 2008 @ 7:37 pm

Why no rifling on the bullet? My 9mm and other handguns have lands and grooves in the barrel. Thats what imparts the spin on the bullet. These bullets look pristine coming out. I know, willful suspension of disbelief.

Does the Sig have a smooth bore?

February 17th, 2008 @ 7:38 pm

I think he used the M2 35mm .i was going to get one its like 900$somthing.

Jake
February 17th, 2008 @ 8:27 pm

Cool. I think it would be a great idea to show how to model the projectile in Blender.

Justin
February 17th, 2008 @ 8:36 pm

Holy crap! i can’t wait for this tutorial. Way to go Andrew, looking forward to this one as always! keep it up.

Matt
February 17th, 2008 @ 8:52 pm

That is just awesome. The hardest park i think would not be just making the bullet itself, but timing the bullet up with the footage. By that i mean, moving around the bullet at the same angle that the shot is going at.

February 17th, 2008 @ 9:01 pm

Matt, what your talking about is the easy part with the techniques I’ll be demonstrating. This is actually my favorite part of this entire effect and what made me finally decide to do it.

Nasser
February 17th, 2008 @ 9:22 pm

Oh wow!! I can’t breathe! This is just too amazing!! I love it, I’m inspired.
If you are going to do a tutorial on this I would love you forever! Especially on creating the bullet. I tried to do a similar effect a couple of weeks ago. It came out decent but I’d like mine to be more similar to yours now haha

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1E3qJiWpu8

check mine out if you’d like!

February 17th, 2008 @ 9:23 pm

Andrew…. I’m speechless.

This is soooo amazing. I’m going all 10th grade girl on you, but I like so totally can’t wait for this. When this comes out I am so like going to order it right away.

Okay, that was a little creepy. But I can’t wait.

Sandy
February 17th, 2008 @ 9:25 pm

Oh my Genius Andrew Kramer, I’m speechless too.
Evrytime you come with some BOOM efx – hehe

thnx n regards
Sandy

February 17th, 2008 @ 10:23 pm

Looks great Andrew. Any hints as to what some of the other advanced techniques might be? and will they be one per dvd? or a few?

Thanks,
George

February 17th, 2008 @ 10:44 pm

The DVD’s in this series will likely cover 1 large-scale VFX shot. So far this has 12 tutorials planned and should be over 2 hours long. They will also include behind the scenes footage of the set and production notes etc.

We are still planning another 10 tutorial DVD that will just cover techniques in After Effects but these will be much more thorough and cover the detail required for motion picture visual effects and workflows.

Adam
February 17th, 2008 @ 10:49 pm

andrew, just a couple of things about the bullet vid. firstly i must say it is very nicely done. looks great. BUT bullets have two extra things that happen to them when they are released from the barrel of the gun.

1. the barrel has a 1/9 rate of twist. this means every nine inches it will have done one full twist.

2. the barrel has rifling inside which would create four grooves from the front of the bullet to the back. about 1mm wide and a poofdeanth deep. but only starts where the projectile is the width of the barrel diamenter.

these are only very picky things but i think you should at least make the bullet twist. thanks for everything andrew and i look forward to actually seeing how you did it.

Johanan
February 17th, 2008 @ 11:49 pm

Why do you torture us with this stuff? Now I wouldn’t be able to sleep until this DVD is released! Come on man, you made us wait for Twitch forever as well – I wanna spend some cash so satisfy my burning desire to see how these marvelous scenes are created. The behind the scenes stuff would be extremely welcome – as far as I’m concerned you can have a DVD just on the behind the scenes stuff :-) )

Jack
February 17th, 2008 @ 11:52 pm

That’s a really nice effect Andrew! i was wondering, what texture did u use for the bullet?

thanks

February 18th, 2008 @ 12:00 am

geesh

February 18th, 2008 @ 12:01 am

Another thing you didn’t tell us is what setting you shot this scene as far as FRAME RATE and if you slowed it down in post.
and do we have to shoot at 60i to slow the scene down to match it with the bullet
time. Because if we donut know what is the best setting for a shot like that.

Eddie
February 18th, 2008 @ 12:17 am

Hey Andrew…excellent job on everything you’ve done and plan to do. Just a quick question…you say you used a cinema adapter on that shot…was it a Redrock Micro M2? If so, have you learned any cool tricks with it? I hear they’re highly recommended! Thanks a million bro!

February 18th, 2008 @ 6:34 am

I think I figured out the After Effects part. This is indeed possible without any 3D tracking and is relatively easy. I think it can be done without any tracking at all. My problem is the bullet, since I’m not very good at 3ds Max. I think I could do the camera move with the bullet passing by, but I could never make it look that realistic with the material and the lightning and all the other settings.

Have anyone seen the movie “Bandidas” with Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz? At the end of the film there is a cool scene, where the camera moves in an environment, while the bullets and knives are flying in slow-motion. Just like in Andrew’s shot, the camera follows the bullet and then the other guy is shooting and the camera follows the other bullet back and there are splinters of the furniture and debris flying around and stuff.

Sam Rose
February 18th, 2008 @ 6:41 am

Hi
I think that bullet is amazing.

I was wondering whether the textures are done in 3Ds max aswell?

This is probably the best website for After effects I have ever been on.

Thanks

February 18th, 2008 @ 6:43 am

See now, that is just plain cool.

Can’t wait for a tutorial on this….wow!
