Call of Duty 4 + Video Copilot?

Like many others, I patiently waited for the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare only to find a special surprise. It seems that someone down at Infinity Ward used Action Movie Essentials for much of the in-game blood.

While playing the game for the first time I noticed something looked familiar. But it wasn’t until I started using the Sniper scope that I saw the blood up close. So I did a screen capture of my gameplay and opened it in After Effects.

I also brought in some of the blood from Action Movie Essentials that seemed like possible candidates. After scrubbing through a few frames I could see that the AME blood fit over the in-game blood like a fingerprint. It was identical except for and additional layer of small blood particles generated by the game makers.

Roll over images to see comparison.

This was a exciting surprise for all of us at Video Copilot, especially since we are all fans of the game series. They even used a lot of the blood for the in-game cinematics, driving the rather interesting story.

The individuals that worked on the game did an excellent job blending the blood into the 3d game play too. The blood reacts to scene lighting as the time of day changes throughout the game. Aside from this effect, the game also has many amazing particle effects and spectacular graphics that we had nothing to do with… but it’s nice to know that we had a small role.

At Video Copilot we don’t expect credit or special royalties when our products are used professionally. They are made to help you and everyone save time and increase quality. Sure we get flattered and brag to our wives, but they don’t even care. The point is, we offer high quality products to everyone at reasonable prices. So be sure to check them out today. Click Here

If you think this is good marketing check this out:

The blood is even in the online part of the game so everyone gets a little taste of Video Copilot, especially when I clean your clock!

November 19th, 2007 @ 11:17 pm
Wow, thats great.
I agree with John, just another proof of the quality and effort behind your work.
Thats an interesting use of your product, you should advertise it.
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:24 pm
I would of never known! I play COD4 all the time man. I'll have to catch ya sometime online, but beware of my sniper skills! Add me gamertag: INSPIRE84

Always loved your products and continue to purchase and use them in my work! Thanks brotha!
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:25 pm

i first didn't know what to say to this. i first thought that it is so bad that they are lazy enough to use that for their famous game. but that is on the other hand so much cooler. so u see u are very popular even in the game industries. so much quality and perfekt masked products what can i say more?
oh yeah. i wish the lynda gyus were more like you.^^

and in saw a lot of ads in television or other things where your stock-footage is used.

see ya -[Cloud]-
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:28 pm
Video Copilot Rocks!!! Congrats!! , thanks for making these great products. You guys deserve all the credit. Good luck and Marry Christmas (or maybe it's a lil early lol).

I am getting Evolution for my b-day, my girlfriend is giving me that series as a birthday gift. i wish my birthday were sooner, have to wait till December 9th :-S
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:30 pm
Whoa! You broke out the CSI skills with the AME overlay match ups. Excellent work Detective Kramer! :) Only a true artist would be able to spot his work at a seconds notice. You can't help to help to get the warm and fuzzies knowing how much of a global impact and influence you and the rest of the team have made with many especially at a professional level. You should feel good about it, Video Copilot deserves it!

Great to see you blogging again!
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:37 pm
Hahahaha! I can't believe that call of duty is using your blood in the game, that is just awesome
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:40 pm
wow! that rocks!
November 19th, 2007 @ 11:55 pm
This is especially cool news. I've been hearing that COD4 and AK work had some how been implemented over the past few days but it's cool to see this news. That camera zoom look familiar.

Big fan of the CoD franchise with the exception of CoD3. CoD4s work is by no mean sub par because of this, but it's good to see they make sure they cover all areas. Congrats Kramer...

I think I saw some of your Riot Gear work in Mass Effect... and a picture of your kid ... weird!?

Again great work Andrew. Hope its a moral booster.

Hi Andrew,

Yesterday I had a job meeting with a motion designer who wanted to work in our little company. He started his demo with a video from your new DVD, telling me 'I've got preanimated graphics if you want"... I said Wouaow and after I while I told him ... hum, isn't from Video Copilot ? THen his hands started to tremble...

Very funny ;-)

We'll buy some of your stuff this week normally !
Keep Going
November 20th, 2007 @ 12:09 am
Lol I tried to add you as a possible friend. Apparently VideoCopilot cant be found... aww boo

Well if you want I am a VFX Supervisor over a small Animation studio called Jereye Animation. We do the ending credit logos at the end of Battlestar Galactica. I've used your products to help train interns and wanted to say thanks but also see how good you really were with that sniper. If you need a team mate add: MarkHawk

take care-

I have retired from Online Gaming about 2 years ago, I have many credits to my name in Online Gaming I have even had my name mentioned in a Magazine for my maps.
I started many years ago in Counter Strike making maps and writing plugins with Olo and Admin Mod.
I had one of the largest clans on the West Coast called KillingSpree many years ago we at one time had over 12 houndred members and seven Dedicated servers, Then years later I joined a COD Group called {SN][PER} Gaming we ran several servers and again I made maps and created {SN][PER} Mods for our servers, I truly enjoyed my Gaming days and now I get to share your joy Andrew Kramer, that is very cool they used your product in the latest release of COD.

Happy Gaming!
November 20th, 2007 @ 1:02 am
Wow... serious awesomenes right there.
You owned that game.
November 20th, 2007 @ 1:09 am
Have you seen the new Apple iPod add? Seems like not only the makers of Call of Duty used some VideoCopilot stuff but also the designers of the Apple adds use the new Evolution package and/or have seen some of the particle tutorials of Andrew. Definitly cool stuff, check out:
btw: Great stuff and very cool tutorials, I've already learned alot! Thank you Andrew

November 20th, 2007 @ 1:53 am
That is spooky...I just got the game 2 days ago and I was thinking "Nice particles and textures" - Now I know why the blood splatter looks familiar!
- I would take that to be a huge compliment to you and the Videocopilot team..well done and keep it coming!
November 20th, 2007 @ 2:24 am
Cool never even noticed! been playing this game for over a week now its amazing! i love the multiplayer, im a General at the moment woo, the new ranking system is a great idea

November 20th, 2007 @ 3:26 am
That's crazy man! I don't think I would have ever noticed that one.

I'm gonna look out for you when I'm playing MP, you have a higher rank than me :(

Do you always play as VideoCopliot?
November 20th, 2007 @ 3:30 am
That's hilarious!!

I'm hoping to get my hands on Evolution here pretty soon!!

Thanks AK!

All the best,

November 20th, 2007 @ 3:30 am
If I play as VideoCopilot then it is tax deductible... JK I usually do use that handle though.
Craig T
November 20th, 2007 @ 3:34 am
I think we should all put a little cash up and create a videocopilot server, just to get to know each other a little better? Is this a rubbish idea or what? lol
November 20th, 2007 @ 4:07 am
I am noticing your work turning up in a lot of places. With the release of Evolution it's going to be everywhere! Personally, I just wouldn't feel right without mentioning VideoCopilot and/or Andrew Kramer in the special thanks portion :) Also VideoCopilot games servers are an awesome idea! VideoCopilot should make indy films as well using some of your patrons as interns. Then release a DVD of how the film was made.

I was flippin the channels last night when I saw one of your ink drips on CMT. CMT Giants: A tribute to Hank Williams Jr.

The ink drip was used in the graphic opener and a few other spots in the show. I know the drips well since I used them also.

I love your stuff man, it is cheap, it saves me hours, and it is really high quality. Keep up the great work Andrew.

November 20th, 2007 @ 12:13 pm
I cant wait to get this game i really can't ihave seen the trailers for it, heard it bragged on the radio and people are posting about it on forums, I will have it soon though. And if i see a video copilot game tag, I will hunt you down lol. What game system do you have it on by the way?
November 20th, 2007 @ 12:13 pm
I have not done an overlay, but the blood bursts in the Red Band trailer of Aliens vs Predator 2 reminded me a lot of the AME ones. The whole trailer is ful of digital blood:) I would have never noticed had I not found your site and became versed in AFX. Our own movie, a prequel to the Resident Evil 4 game is shaping up quite nicely. I will put the trailer on youtube soon. This project would have never been possible without the great AK!

BTW: Can you give us a clue what the next tut will be about?:)

I was happy to hear that cuz its the best game ever and by the way if you go on line look for my name .

Hey Andrew,
It's hard to say for sure, but it looks like the new iPod TV ad uses a bit of evolution.
Check it out:
November 20th, 2007 @ 8:51 pm
Tom Wood,
I have seen that commercial twice tonight I can swear it looks like Evo, and in the beginning I think they even used twister.

Cool :)

November 21st, 2007 @ 1:19 pm
That iPod commercial looks totally cool, and if it isnt AK's Evo used in there, it looks pretty close. Just goes to show another example of how cool that product really is.

Nice find.

I can't prove them wrong, AME is the best.
You can't create a proper shooter without it. :P

Ok, now back to CoD4...

Haha, that's awesome Andrew :D Especially in such a great game it's fun to see something you've had your hand in! Gratz on that mate!
November 21st, 2007 @ 3:09 pm
That is seriously awesome. When I was playing I actually thought "I wonder if they used some actual blood stock footage thing for that stuff?" But I never thought it would be from VideoCopilot! What rank are you now? I'm at 22, but that's only because I'm stilling playing Team Fortress 2 so much.
November 21st, 2007 @ 7:31 pm
The products are great that's why people use them.

I'm from New Zealand and Riot Gear is used in almost every ad on TV.

Biscuit companies use it search "Arnotts Tim Tams"

One TV station uses the liquid dye overlays for the main splash before and after every show search "Channel 2"

Anyway, keep it up...

Roosevelt Purification
November 23rd, 2007 @ 12:29 am
Andrew you actually dug it out :), awesome! You might want to look up some of the Family Guy episodes, they also use similar or perhaps the same VCP blood effect :).
November 24th, 2007 @ 12:46 pm

I was just watching Dirty Jobs on the Discovery channel, and I think they are using your Riot Gear ink splats... I tried finding a copy of the show online but was unsuccessful. Anyone else notice that?

November 24th, 2007 @ 1:52 pm

Congrats. Thats so awesome that you got your stuff onto Call of Duty 4. BTW, how do you take a screenshot of a video game? Are you playing on your computer? Thanks.

Im proud to have read this article being a big COD4 fan and enthusiastic Video Copilot student, I feel honoured. Not only is Andrews ability and talent on a different level from most of us he can also teach it to us on a level we can all understand and ALSO has the generousity to give us access to this free education. This article seals the deal if you are unsure who to go to to learn special effects... feels like i'm learning AE from Hendrix! Andrew Kramer you are omnipotent.
