July 3rd, 2007 @ 12:40 am

Hi Andrew!
i saw the same effect in Resident Evil: Extinction movie trailer, but there was also zoom out effect at 1:07 time and at the end camera pointed at Milas face. Just You need to see what i’m talking about http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony_pictures/residentevilextinction/high.html

Miquel

July 3rd, 2007 @ 1:50 am

Well you can always zoom in even further by starting with a live action shot of someone from on top of a latter or something high. Then use this as the starting point and follow the rest of the tutorial.

Best,
AK

July 3rd, 2007 @ 1:56 am

Pretty good stuff there Andrew. I made one too some time ago (check my website->demos), but I actually built it in 3d space. I don’t know why I did, but I think it worked out kinda ok. Could have been better though.

July 3rd, 2007 @ 1:57 am

Sadly I must report that my camera burn up on re-entry. No zoom to earth for me. ; )

Great demo, great humour. What I don’t understand is why you would give that one for free. Man, this one tutorial alone would sell any new training DVD.

Have you ever thought of setting up a donation button on your web page? I am sure tons of people would be happy to give. Picture this, Andrew Kramer, on the sidewalk of a busy street, creating tutorials with your hat on the sidewalk. I would throw money in the hat for what you do.

Thank you very much Andrew.

Fergi, really like your demo clips. I was going to write very professional but that would insinuate you’re an amateur and I know your not. Great idea with the 3D photos and precise use of sound.

Excellent work! Very professional results! great work man.

July 3rd, 2007 @ 4:55 am

For some years, I’ve seen a LOT of tutorials from different applications, but I never seen tutorials of complex applications so well made and easy to follow. I can’t imagine what can Andrew do with Maya & 3DMax, where other “BIG” guys fail in teaching.

Excellent Work!!! I saw the rendered video on my big LCD screen and its like watching a movie.

July 3rd, 2007 @ 6:36 am

Andrew, for lining up the images, you can alternately use the difference mode. The camera shake is a nice touch.

Ferdi, your zoom is really nice. The blurred edges give it a really nice dreamy look.

Jim W.

July 3rd, 2007 @ 6:36 am

Thanks Andrew for a great tutorial. Would it be possible for, at the end of the tutorial, using a hi-res image of Earth with Cycore’s Sphere plug-in so we can make it rotate? When I use Google Earth, it has the stupid google earth image and the compass embedded on the top and bottom of my image. Any way to overcome that?

July 3rd, 2007 @ 6:40 am

Another great tutorial Andrew. Keep em coming, seriously. Each tutorial you have brings something new and incredibly useful to the table. Brilliant work…as usual!

and if anyone has a problem with Indiana Jones or Harrison Ford or Lucas & Spielberg for that matter will have to take it into the octagon

July 3rd, 2007 @ 1:20 pm

Very great tutorial!

Here’s my attempt:

http://www.felixbruns.de/tmp/earth.zoom.h264.mov

I like the beginning but the end is kinda crappy… :(
Images didn’t really match with the globe. And I forgot
to add a bit rotation but I don’t feel like rendering again,
even if it’s just about an hour with motion blur.

AK, I went to the link for google maps and everythings all good except for saving the images out. How the heck do u take the images from the satelite and save them as jpegs onto your computer? it wont let me right click and “save as” as most sites let u because its flash. ???

July 3rd, 2007 @ 2:18 pm

@Bones: Just hit the print screen button and cut out the area you want. That’s how I did it.

Great tutorial Andrew! I’m trying to re-create this for an HD project, but I still don’t see how to download the size photographs that you got. I can save from Google Earth, but they’re about 1000×800 at most. So, once again, WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE HIGH REZ PHOTOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? Please and thank you!

up..

here’s the link!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9qWCXp0Ugk

Please watch it!!, I just turned 16 and I got my
iMac 24″ with 2 gigs ram…I’m surprised that I did
this thing with After Effects 6.5 and rendered pretty fast with
the right settings..took me an hour just to render it with
proper settings and stuff…but when I saved it as a preset
it rendered in like 4 minutes…good..good..

July 3rd, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

haha, and I used Yahoo maps…you gotta be a genious like me to
know how to take the ads and writing out of the pictures…

just kidding, I just zoomed in really close on the first picture (closest)
then all the other pictures, I just cropped out all the writing with
the pen tool, and it seemed to work fine. I didn’t have to do anything
with Photoshop.

DEAR ,Felix Bruns

I like your zoom try!!
I live in holland so the maps are almost the same for me. Can you email me the maps you used, and the beautiful rounded earth ,PLEASE.
Or let me know where you get it….

Andrew,
You rock!

July 4th, 2007 @ 12:54 am

PLEAE READ!

Google Maps has the satellite imagery, use the print screen to take a picture at various zoom levels and use them as described in the tutorial.

They are not available for every location. Read some of the replies for other helpful links or do a search.

San Fransisco is a big city so the imagery looked good and that is what I used it. Not every location will have such nice imagery. Do your best with what you can find.

Thanks-

lennon
July 4th, 2007 @ 1:06 am

Hi, do you think that if I use google maps for a job, they will get me in jail?? Really, they would have to search the complete surface of the earth hahaha! I really don’t know anywhere else to find this kind of pictures, and I don’t think that any other will let me use their pictures(?)
Damn, I wonder how they do it in Hollywood.

July 4th, 2007 @ 1:51 am

Also, there’s © Google all over the image. I once did a earth zoom, and I used google earth, wich works also good(you even have the option to export high-res images).

Andrew – one day you should write a blog about how long it takes you to discover all these cool tecnhiques. All the times you have to get things wrong before you get them right. How many lonely hours you have to spend staring at pixels. Maybe it’d be a tad self-indulgent, but then this is your site, and many of us would be interested, and I think we’d probably appreciate your work even more.

This was an epic tutorial. Well done, amigo. Thanks for teaching an ignorant Brit how to maximise AF’s. I’ve learnt more in a 22-minute tutorial than I ever did in university studying film.

Martijn
July 4th, 2007 @ 3:27 am

Great tutorial!

Although I do have a little problem.. Got about 20 layers, all parented. When finally ‘unparenting’, and parenting all the layers to layer 1, they become invincible. Changing the size of layer 1 will show me layer one, the rest is gone.

Parenting all the layers to the last layer does work. Problem is, like you stated in the tutorial, you can change the size value to hundreds of thousands, but it will zoom minimal.

Could it be because I used different sizes of images? (used googles maps for the first 10, then the other ones from nasa, but they have a different resolution).

In a simple test with just the 10 images it worked great..
Thanks!

July 4th, 2007 @ 3:47 am

@MNI:

Just go to http://maps.google.com (Go into your browsers full screen
mode, and close the side panel). Then it’s really easy to take some
screen captures.

For the earth map: http://www.felixbruns.de/tmp/earthmap10k.reduced.jpg (Or search for
‘earthmap10k’ on Google). I just pre-composed this with an additional
animated cloud layer and then applied the ‘CC Sphere’ effect.

I love the video, however when i tried this myself using layers for my area, but when i got to the bit where you adjust the scale of the first pic to 100, for some reason it would only zoom out as far as pic 2 and then it would come back in again. I couldn’t get it to zoom right out to space. What am i doing wrong? I copied the tutorial bit by bit, but can’t get the zoom to go further than pic 2

THIS IS MY VERSION, FROM A BUILDING IN NEW YORK CITY.

http://www.artisdesign.se/earthzoom.mov

I don’t have the pro version so I didn’t get the perfect outzoom. But I think I worked it out pretty well anyway. Made my own curb between the outzoom keyframes in the graph. Thanks for the tutorial. see you.

July 4th, 2007 @ 9:06 am

@Dave: You need to enter a very small value (0,0005 like Andrew did). Do not drag to zoom, enter int manually.

July 4th, 2007 @ 9:09 am

I am going to have to try and find more detailed images. I want to start from an ACTOR walking along a street and zoom back out. With Yahoo and Google, that is hard to do because they are not hi-res images and they are pretty far away from the earth even a the most zoomed-in point.

You know what would make this even more realistic? By not making the stars zoom by. I mean, the stars arent right next to the eart, so we shouldnt be seeing any motion blur on them (except for the rotation maybe..). And they shouldn’t move at all.

By making them look like they are far away, you get a little more “3D effect” feel over it as well.

July 4th, 2007 @ 10:21 am

hej…i have got a problem…how can i save the images by google maps…i’ve got the satelite view and then i don’t know where i can save my image….PLS help me

Hey Ferdi, how did you that amazing 3d photo effect? Did u used the 3d projection tehnique or did u cut the layers in photoshop, or how? I need that same effect for a project and I came out with something similar using AE and 3d max camera mapping but I doesnt look that realistic. It would be nice if u could share some tips.

Andrew..u did it again man. One of my favorites. I trying to merge this with some real live footage to create something interesting..still working on it, but I’ll post a link if I can get it right..

Here Is my video going up from my house. I remember someone saying something about adding a satellite on the way up, so in my video I added a satellite and edited it the same way as the clouds where done. I was thinking of adding a 747 but thought it would be way too much to see in the few seconds everything is moving. So here it is
